Motorola has silently removed all references to its Moto G4 Oreo update promise

Motorola recently revealed a list of smartphones that it said would receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update. Notably missing from the list was the Moto G4 series, not only because it is not even 18 months old at this point, but also because Motorola had explicitly promised Oreo update for these devices. And now, it has come to light that the company has even silently removed all references to its Moto G4 Oreo update promise. Here's the first proof - on left is part of the original Moto G4 poster promising both Android N and O updates, and on the right is the updated poster, that just promises...

Week 37 in review: iPhone trio, Xiaomi duo debut

Week 37 of 2017 was dominated by three important events. The first was Apple holding its annual iPhone refresh, which this time brought three new devices, including the X - the first major redesign since the iPhone 5 came around. Xizomi introduced a couple of interesting devices too - the Mi Mix 2 and the Mi Note 3 are both premium offerings and understandably got plenty of attention. Finally Samsung released the Galaxy Note8 in 42 markets, marking the official start of its sales. Early numbers are impressive, but we'll see how much of an impact the iPhone 8 release next week will have...

Top 10 trending phones of week 37

An exciting week in the news section would always result in major shifts in our top 10 trending chart, so it's no surprise that we see plenty of new faces here. The new iPhone trio wasted no time and took first, second and fourth places - with the iPhone X leading the pack. The Xiamomi Mi Mix 2, which also debuted this week got to fifth place, meaning that the only familiar face in the top 5 is the Samsung Galaxy Note8 in third. Another Xiaomi - last week's leader Mi A1 - is now in sixth, ahead of a couple Samsung Galaxy phones - the S8 and J7 Pro. The vivo V7+ made a somewhat...

Weekly poll: are the new iPhones hot or not?

The two iPhone 8 models are now available for pre-order and the X will go on pre-order late next month. But they cost a lot of money, do you think they are as hot as Apple says they are? The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus haven't changed that much. Sure, they have Wide color gamut displays and the cameras have been upgraded with 2160p @ 60fps video capture. There's also wireless charging and a new chipset too, but did the iPhone 7 ever feel slow? However, if you're coming from the 6s generation or earlier, the new models are a sizeable upgrade. But think about it - once Apple gets the...

The new phones of week 37

Week 37 was an exciting one - it couldn't be anything else when it brought three new iPhones, including the anniversary X with its gorgeous bezelless front side. The iPhone 8 duo is a more conservative upgrade, but an important one nonetheless. And as if that wasn't enough we also got a Xiaomi event that brought the successor of the phone that that started it all - the Mi Mix. The second Mix comes with a more compact 6" 18:9 screen, and even slimmer chin. It was joined on stage by the Mi Note 3 - a larger Mi 6 in design, but powered by a more modest Snapdragon 660 chipset. Asus and YU...

Understanding HDR: cameras and displays

HDR. You may have come across this term several times, perhaps even in the course of just today. It seems it is everywhere now and everyone is talking about it. But what is HDR? It's in your TV, it's in your phone. It may even be in your camera but is that even the same? And what even is color gamut? What do people mean when they say "whites are whiter and blacks are blacker" and who is this Dolby Vision person? It's time to find all that out. Understanding Dynamic Range To understand HDR or High Dynamic Range, we must first understand dynamic range. Dynamic range of anything is the...
