Dual tone designs for the Huawei P30 show up in patent applications

The European patent office received applications for two new color options for the Huawei P30. One is almost a gradient, the other is a dual tone paint job, reminiscent of the "panda" version of the Pixel 2 XL. Huawei P30 in a dual tone paint job The gradient version is a variation of the P30's Breathing Crystal, though it if you look closely, you'll see that it uses the dual tone design too - the top third of the back is a separate panel. The effect is much more subtle, however. Huawei P30's new gradient color (with a dual tone twist) The applications...

BlackBerry starts taking applications for the Priv Marshmallow beta program

As rumored last week, BlackBerry has today started taking applications for a new Beta Program for the Priv's Marshmallow update. Essentially this means that you can sign up to beta test the Android 6.0 Marshmallow software for the Priv before it goes out to everyone who owns the Canadian smartphone maker's first Android device. You'll then receive an over-the-air update with the beta build. The sign-up page is here. People will be accepted into the program in batches, and it looks like the first one has already been filled. You can however put yourself on the waiting list, and when a new...

Apple now requires iOS developers to use 64-bit code

Ever since Apple unveiled the iPhone 5s, it has been keen to brag about the 64-bit support of the Apple A7 chip. Starting February, it will require developers to develop their apps to work on the 64-bit architecture as well as the 32-bit one. This means that the company is slowly but surely moving to a 64-bit only support in iOS. There are currently Apple products that are still using 32-bit CPU architecture, so the company is unlikely to require developers make apps using only 64-bit compliant code for at least another year. In addition, Apple has also launched a Swift mini-site to lure developers to start using its capabilities. Swift is Apple's new programming language for iOS and Mac applications. Google is also headed in the 64-bit code direction with the launch of Android 5.0 Lollipop. The search giant still doesn't require developers to start making 64-bit compliant applications yet, but we're sure this time will come sooner or later. Source |...

Job listing reveals HTC working on new Windows 10 Mobile devices

HTC's last Windows Phone device was the One (M8) for Windows, which was released back in 2014. The Taiwanese company has been launching only Android-phones since then. Does that mean the firm has given up on Windows Phone completely? Well, doesn't seem so. HTC One (M8) for Windows A recently-spotted job posting from Microsoft indicates that HTC is continuing its partnership with the Redmond, Washington-based company as far as mobile devices are concerned. The listing says Microsoft is looking for a director of account management in HTC's home country, and refers to a "goal to build product portfolio that highlight focused user scenarios around our Windows 10 Mobile and Microsoft services combined with HTC's devices, applications, and services." Here is the complete listing: The team is seeking a Director of Account Management, located in Taipei, Taiwan to report to the Director of Device Sales in Shenzhen, China. In this global role, the Director is responsible for developing this dynamic and fast growing Ecosystem and Partnering with business groups and channel teams while sharing deep insight and strategic vision. The Taiwan ecosystem contains our global tier 2 ODM partners including ECS, Uniwill, Shuttle, Clevo in addition to tier 2 IDHs and SIs for which this person will manage. In addition, this person will lead all aspects of sales and business development interaction with HTC, one of our top 3rd party phone device partner accounts. Being the HTC AM will have a heavy emphasis on coordinated strategy development with OSG, Marketing, and OEM. Impact must be driven through senior executive levels up to and including CEO level with the goal to build product portfolio that highlight focused user scenarios around our Windows 10 Mobile and Microsoft services combined with HTC's devices, applications, and services. It's amply clear now that Windows 10 Mobile devices aren't selling well. Although new OEMs like VAIO and HP have recently hopped on the Windows 10 Mobile bandwagon, it would be interesting to see if HTC takes this risk given that the company itself is struggling at the...

NVIDIA announces Tegra X1 with 1 teraflop performance

NVIDIA has announced their brand new mobile processor for 2015, the Tegra X1. The X1 is the first mobile processor in the world capable of 1 teraflop floating point performance, which almost puts it in the same league as desktop class GPU and current generation gaming consoles. The X1 has a new octa-core CPU cluster, consisting of four Cortex A57 and four Cortex A53 cores with a custom CPU interconnect and cluster migration. The four A57 cores have 2MB of L2 cache between them and the A53 cores have 512MB. On the GPU side, NVIDIA has turned to using its latest generation Maxwell architecture, which we saw on their flagship desktop GPU this year, the GTX 980. Although not quite in the same league performance-wise, the 256 CUDA core GPU in the X1 is twice as powerful as the Kepler-based GPU on the K1. It's also capable of 1 teraflop of floating point performance. To put that into perspective, the Xbox One is capable of 1.3 teraflop while the PS4 can do 1.84 teraflop. The X1 has a 64-bit wide LPDDR4 memory capable of peak memory bandwidth of 25.6MB/s. It is also capable of outputting 3840x2160, that's 4K at 60fps, to an internal or external display with support for HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. X1 also has improved codec supports and can decode VP9, VP8, H.264, H.265 (10-bit) at 2160p60, along with 600 MP/s (megapixels per second) JPEG encode and decode. Tegra X1 also supports all major graphics standards, including Unreal Engine 4, DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.5, CUDA, OpenGL ES 3.1 and the Android Extension Pack. Along with mobile use, NVIDIA also has planned other applications for the X1, namely in automobiles, with its newly announced NVIDIA DRIVE car computers. The DRIVE PX computing platform will be used for autopilot applications, where two X1 processors will take input from 12 onboard cameras for features such as Surround Vision that lets you see a seamless 360 view outside of your car on your screen and Auto-Valet for automatic parking. DRIVE CX will power your car's infotainment system, such as navigation, digital instrument clusters, audio system, HVAC, and driver monitoring. Mobile devices running Tegra X1 are expected in the first half of 2015 with automobiles leveraging the DRIVE PX and CX in the second half of 2015. Source 1 • Source...

Samsung's standalone VR headset might carry 'Odyssey' moniker

Back in April this year, Samsung confirmed that it's working on a standalone virtual reality headset. While the company went ahead and revealed some of the device's features (like positional tracking), there was no word on what name the headset will carry. While, Samsung still hasn't given us any confirmation, but going by recent trademark and logo applications by the South Korean company, the headset might be called Odyssey. Adding weight to this are short descriptions provided in the trademark applications, including "virtual reality game headsets," and "virtual reality...

Here's what you can expect from the Apple Spring Forward event

MWC 2015 is now behind us, but that doesn't mean all is calm in the tech world. Apple might have skipped the Barcelona venue, but the tech giant has an event prepared for next Monday - March 9. It is entitled "Spring Forward" and will begin at precisely 10 a.m. PDT. It will be live-streamed on Apple's website, but, as usual, only for OSX and iOS devices. The event is most likely going to be centered around the Apple Watch, the company's highly-anticipated smartwatch. The watch is said to offer a set of premium materials and color choices, so a large part of the presentation will most likely be devoted to customization. Options range from rubber and a simple glass finish, through leather and steel straps and a sapphire glass, all the way up to gold, for the most extravagant users. Another key topic at the presentation will surely be the device's functionality. Apple has decided on a feature-rich approach for its first wearable, as opposed to Android Wear devices, which aim to be more of a convenient side assistant. Keeping this in mind, we are most likely going to see a large number of applications on the Watch that duplicate existing phone features, much like with the Samsung Gear S, but also dedicated new Watch experiences as well. This is surely going to be a huge selling point and we have no doubt that a large portion of Monday's presentation will be devoted to what applications the wearable is going to offer at launch and also what can be achieved using the company's WatchKit. Apple has invested a lot of effort in its future wearable ecosystem and developers have been actively participating along the way. Some estimates even claim that the Apple Watch will have as much as 100 000 apps at launch, but we'll just have to wait and see about that. Besides the Apple Watch, however, there have also been a few other rumors floating around, regarding what the Cupertino giant might bring to the show on Monday. One prevailing speculation is that a new 12-inch MacBook Air with Retina display is going to make the rounds on March 9. While this is not entirely in tune with previous release schedules it is very plausible, considering all the recent hype. Rumors also speculate that it will be joined by another 12-inch device, only this time it's a tablet. The 12-ich iPad Pro first popped up in the rumor mill in January and has been widely discussed since. The attention it generated was so great, that fans even produced gorgeous 3D renders of the alleged device. Another thing that is a lot more likely to make an appearance this Monday is the new version of iOS - 8.2. It has been in development for quite some time now and 5 beta versions have already seeded to developers. Seeing how the main features in brings to the table revolve around expanding the fitness tracking functionality and the compatibility with the Apple Watch, it is more than likely that it will be officially start seeding to end users come Monday. Last, but not least, a new music streaming service, based on Beats Music is on its way to becoming a part of iOS's stock music player. Recent reports hint at a likely delay with the new feature, but there is still a possibility we might see it on stage come Monday. All in all, Apple's "Spring Forward" event is shaping up quite nicely. Be sure to check back on Monday for our coverage of what Apple have in store for the tech...

Nintendo could enter mobile gaming controller market

After launching its first smartphone app, Japan-based gaming company Nintendo could now enter the mobile gaming controller market. The revelation was made by Shinya Takahashi, Nintendo's general manager of entertainment planning and development. "Physical controllers for smart device applications are available in the market and it is possible that we may also develop something new by ourselves," he said. "I believe Nintendo's way of thinking is to look at whether action games are really not impossible (without a physical controller for smart device applications) to create and how we...

MediaTek Dimensity 9400+ is here with a minor prime CPU core frequency bump

The much anticipated MediaTek Dimensity 9400+ is now official, and as expected, it's a minor improvement over the 9400 which was launched last year. The Dimensity 9400+'s CPU has one ARM Cortex-X925 core clocked at up to 3.73 GHz, higher than the 3.63 GHz of the 9400. So basically, it seems like the 9400+ is a higher-bin 9400. While the NPU 890 is still in, it now comes with 20% faster agentic AI performance with Speculative Decoding+ and lets developers easily turn traditional AI applications into "sophisticated agentic AI applications" because "agentic AI" is the buzzword of early 2025...

June patch downgrading Android P-powered Nokia 7 Plus units to Oreo

If you are a Nokia 7 Plus user running Android P beta on your unit, you are strongly advised against installing the latest June security update (if you haven't already). Reason being, those who did are reporting serious issues post update. Specifically, users say the 1.3GB update is basically a downgrade package, and so it results in applications force closing and even device crashing in some cases. Even the rollback package on the Android P install page is of no use because the June update has a newer time stamp. Of course, users of beta builds are expecting to face bugs, but...
