Samsung Galaxy S10 trio will boast LPDDR5 RAM

During the Summer of 2018, Samsung unveiled world's first LPDDR5 memory chips for next-generation smartphones and now we learn what we've suspected all along - the Galaxy S10 trio will most probably make use of the new tech. A tipster on Twitter suggests that the Galaxy S10 phones coming next month will be equipped with in-house LPDDR5 memory chips. They are believed to be at least 30% more power-efficient than the LPDDR4X chips and up to 1.5x faster achieving data transfer speeds of around 6,400Mbps. I heard the #GalaxyS10 might use LPDDR5 RAM 😉 pic.twitter.com/uJexVuNrkp— Max...

Samsung Galaxy Note9 owners in the UAE are receiving stable Android 9.0 Pie

The first Android 9.0 Pie OTA updates for the Galaxy Note9 were sighted in Germany a week ago but today. However, only users who participated in the beta testing got the stable update. Today, however, UAE users running Oreo are seeing their devices updated. There are numerous reports from the country citing that devices still running the Oreo version are now receiving stable Android 9.0 Pie along with Samsung's brand new One UI skin on top. This OTA update is about 1.6GB big and the software version is N960FXXU2CSA2. It's obviously a staged rollout and you might have to wait a few...

The Google Pixel Stand is an unreliable, expensive mess

The Google Pixel Stand accessory was announced back in October along with the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL. It was Google's first wireless fast charger, designed specifically with the Pixel 3 phones in mind. At $79 it was definitely one of the most expensive chargers on the market, but it came with a few cool features that promised to make it all worthwhile. The Pixel Stand featured a custom UI that would be displayed on the phone's screen when it was placed on the Pixel Stand, which kept the clock always on, along with displaying Google Assistant, your schedule, any song that could...

VLC soon to get Apple AirPlay support on iOS, Android and probably Windows

At CES 2019, VLC revealed that it has plans to implement support for AirPlay so you can stream all of your videos on Apple TV from your Android or iOS device. Unfortunately, it's still unclear when the feature will be rolled out but the lead developers over at Videolan said they are planning to introduce it with the next major update VLC 4. For now, the app can stream to your Chromecast. Moreover, the support for AirPlay will likely extend to Windows as well since VLC is modular and it may not depend on the target platform API making it compatible with all operating systems. Via

Future Oppo and OnePlus devices could use Qi wireless charging

Oppo just joined the Wireless Power Consortium, which in turn means that future Oppo devices could finally make use of the Qi wireless charging tech. Maybe as early as 2019? And since Oppo, vivo and OnePlus are parent companies of BBK Electronics, it's probably safe to assume that their future smartphones will come with wireless charging capabilities. This is often the case with Oppo and OnePlus - when Oppo adopts some kind of tech, OnePlus follows with its next flagship devices. Perhaps the OnePlus 7 won't have Qi wireless charging since the phone has already entered development...

Redmi Note 7 is actually waterproof (kind of)

Redmi Note 7 was introduced just two days ago, but the official announcement missed to mention an important feature - the ports and buttons have watertight seals. Xiaomi's CEO, Lei Jun, took the time to boast about the phone's build quality on Weibo. He says that the engineering team put a lot of effort to design watertight seals for all the weak points of the handset - the SIM card tray, USB-C port, 3.5mm audio jack, the buttons and you can even find some around the camera module. Moreover, there's a membrane on the loudspeaker as well. Despite the low price tag of the handset, Lei...

Google Play Books app on Android gets a redesign

Google has finally updated the Android version of the Play Books app with the new Material Theme design. The app now features a uniform white color theme across the screen, with a redesigned tab bar, smaller thumbnails with rounded corners, new typography and an overall cleaner look. The design of the new app is consistent with the new Material Theme that Google has been propagating throughout all its properties. Samsung remembers its past milestones as Galaxy nears its 10 year anniversary

The Samsung I7500 Galaxy was announced in April 2009 - Samsung's Android phones turn 10 this year. Galaxy would grow to become the biggest smartphone line in the world, but it had to go through many innovations and milestones to get here. Samsung has a history of innovative devices and their DNA can still be seen in modern Galaxy gadgets. In 1999 it brought mobile entertainment to a new level with a TV phone. It's 1.8" color screen makes today's 6+ inch slabs look like pocket IMAX theaters. That same year the SPH-WP10 watch phone was unveiled, the grand-daddy of the Galaxy...

Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 outscores the 710 on AnTuTu, matches it on Geekbench

An unknown device has appeared on AnTuTu, sporting the new 11nm Snapdragon 675 chipset. It scored 174K, which is a lot higher than the 155K we got with the 10nm Snapdragon 710-powered Oppo RX17 Pro. What's more interesting than the chip itself is the phone that's wielding it. Only two phones are using the Snapdragon 675 - the yet-to-be-announced Moto P40 and the HiSense U30, so the reasonable guess is that the score is from the latter. Samsung's Lite model will actually be called Galaxy S10 E, eschews in-display fingerprint sensor

AT&T's decision to rebrand LTE as "5G E" may not have gone very well with its competitors, but Samsung seems to have taken notice. That is because, according to a new rumor, the smartphone previously known as Galaxy S10 Lite will actually be sold under the name Galaxy S10 E. Make of that what you wish. Additionally, for cost-cutting purposes, this device will not come with an under-display fingerprint sensor, like the S10 and S10+. Hopefully that means it will actually be affordable, and not priced at iPhone XR levels. Then again, it is supposedly Samsung's direct competitor for the XR, so...

Nokia 8.1 Plus renders show a punch hole camera on a 6.2" display

These come from the usually reliable @OnLeaks, but something's not quite right with the device. Despite the "Plus" designation, the phone is essentially the same size as the regular Nokia 8.1 - its screen measures 6.22". Dimensions are very similar too, the new phone will be 156.9 x 76.2 x 7.9mm, the current non-Plus model is 154.8 x 75.8 x 8mm. Nokia 8.1 Plus renders Sure, the punch hole selfie camera opens up a bit of space on the...

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 review

Once a prop for the communicating devices in sci-fi flicks, today the edge-to-edge screen has become a must-have feature for any flagship smartphone. It was Xiaomi who made the first steps in this direction back with their original Mi Mix phone a year before Apple came up with their notched iPhone X. The Mi Mix 3 proves once again that nothing is impossible and delivers a truly bezel-less screen with a twist (or rather, with a slide).

Xiaomi unveils the logo for the Redmi brand

Xiaomi has announced plans to spin off the Redmi line as a separate brand and brands need logos. CEO Lei Jun unveiled a minimalistic logo that simply says "Redmi by Xiaomi". The debut phones of the new brand will be the Redmi 7 and Redmi Note 7, which will be unveiled at an event tomorrow. You can see images of both, courtesy of TENAA. They feature gradient paintjobs, which carries over to the alternative rendering of the logo. This move will separate Xiaomi's flagships (under the Mi brand) and the value for money phones (though Redmi might have some heavy hitters like the Redmi...

Samsung showcases its foldable phone to a limited audience at CES 2019

CES 2019 is taking place in Las Vegas right now and even if there aren't many phone announcements coming from there, some companies still pull some surprises out of the sleeve. According to Korean media, Samsung showcased its foldable phone exclusively to customers behind closed doors. Lenovo Z5 Pro GT pops up on Geekbench with Snapdragon 855 on board

Lenovo announced the first smartphone with Snapdragon 855 Z5 Pro GT last month and now we get to see its first benchmark scorecard. The score sheet says the handset tested is the Lenovo L78032 with 6GB of RAM, an octa-core Qualcomm processor and runs Android 9.0 Pie out of the box. This contradicts the official specs of the handset as there are only 8 and 12GB memory variants but then again, the single-core and multi-core scores are in line with what we expect from a Snapdragon 855 and certainly more than the Snapdragon 710 found on the Z5 Pro and Z5s can pull off. After all, the...
