GoPro and Galaxy Note 2 recovered 2.5 years after stratospheric journey

A journey to the stratosphere and back, meant to last short of two hours, is now complete more than two years later. The travelers - a GoPro camera, a Samsung Galaxy Note II and a Sony camcorder have just been retrieved after spending about 27 months lying on the desert floor in the Grand Canyon. The devices were installed in a custom-designed 3D-printed enclosure and tied to a weather balloon. Launched into space in June 2013, the trio took part in a flight to the stratosphere, shooting some unique images on the way. The journey itself lasted only an hour and 38 minutes, and the Note II was supposed to report its GPS coordinates via SMS upon landing, so that the crew could go and pick up their gear. Unfortunately, the devices landed in an area without cellular coverage, contrary to what AT&T's maps indicated during the planning of the event, and the tech along with the footage was thus bound for oblivion. In a fairy tale turn of events, the gear was discovered just recently by a woman hiking in the area, a woman who happens to work at AT&T. Talk about irony. You can watch the highlights of the trip in the video below. Source |...

Oppo R7s certified by TENAA, a 5.5-inch one this time

Oppo is apparently not content with the diversity of its R7 range and a new entrant is on the way. In all fairness, it's a pretty wide gap between the 6-inch Oppo R7 Plus and the 5-inch R7, while the R7 Lite was never meant to address that particular issue, instead focusing on affordability. The Oppo R7s is now coming along, as Chinese telecom regulator TENAA will attest, though the name may not be final. The new model with a 5.5-inch FullHD AMOLED display sits smack in the middle between the the R7 Plus and R7 in terms of display diagonal. As these listings never name the chipset specifically, we're left to speculate that the octa-core 1.5GHz CPU is part of a Snapdragon 615 chip - after all, the rest of the R7 bunch is equipped with it. RAM is 3GB again (only the R7 Lite has 2GB), and internal storage is 32GB, expandable as usual. A 13MP/8MP camera combo is on board, and the R7s runs on the latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Oppo R7s at TENAA Nothing all that impressive so far, but a careful look at the specsheet reveals a hefty 200g weight. That's 8g more than the 6-inch R7 Plus with its 4,100mAh battery, so could the R7s have a monstrous battery like its bigger brother? Unfortunately, it's one of the details sadly missing from the regulator's entry. Weight isn't one of the fields where we've witnessed TENAA get its facts wrong (like camera resolution), but the 151.8 x 75.4 x 6.7mm dimensions, specifically the thickness, suggest that may be the case this time. The thing is though, there are two versions of the device with different radios, receiving certification, and both supposedly weigh 200g. We'll need to wait for an official announcement to shed more light on the matter, but the voice of reason whispers that it's nothing more than an error. The Oppo R7s, however, with its 5.5-inch display is very much real. Source 1 Source...

Meizu PRO 5 paves the way for a new sub-brand, launch scheduled for September 25

In a bid to differentiate its true flagship from its almost-as-good-but-not-quite-there MX5, Meizu is mixing things up in terms of naming and the new top-end model will be called simply PRO 5. Compare that to the previous generation, where one was called MX4, and the other MX4 Pro. In a way, it's actually a move to a new sub-brand, with multiple models to come. Meizu's logo is only discreetly stamped on the side of the retail package of the pioneering PRO 5, photos of which have been circulating online these past couple of days. Meizu PRO 5 retail packaging The PRO 5 will come in two versions, powered by either an Exynos 7420 chip, or Mediatek's much-hyped Helio X20 that boasts the first deca-core CPU, both reportedly benchmarked earlier. Meizu's VP has explicitly stated that we won't be seeing a Snapdragon 810 SoC inside a PRO 5, with some pretty harsh words on the chipset being uttered to justify the decision. By now it's also been confirmed that the smartphones will come with a 1080p display, likely with a 5.5-inch diagonal. Previous reports outlined different specs for the Exynos and Mediatek versions, but something along the lines of 3GB/4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and a 21MP primary camera, is to be expected. Speculations will end on September 25, when the first PRO model will be unveiled, according to Meizu's official schedule. A price around the CNY 3,000 ($470) ballpark has been rumored. Google Maps shows global warming effect on Los Angeles coastline

There are those who stubbornly refuse to acknowledge that global warming is a thing, and will perhaps continue to do so until ocean water arrives at their doorstep. That's what Google has tried to recreate, though still on a virtual scale, by showing the effect of the phenomenon on the Los Angeles coastline. Now, it doesn't seem likely that Google thinks that non-believers are concentrated in that part of the world. Odds are that it can generate more publicity and awareness than an obscure uninhabited coast in Chile (a big fan of Chile, don't get the wrong impression). This new "feature" of Google Maps seems to only affect the L.A. coast for now, and you may not be able to check it out for yourself everywhere in the world. We certainly tried, and couldn't replicate it from our headquarters, so it's likely a region-limited thing. Via 1 Via...

Alcatel OneTouch Watch makes its way to India

Many, many months after it was announced at CES, the Alcatel OneTouch Watch is now official for the Indian market too. It will be exclusively sold by Flipkart, priced at INR 7,999 (that's $120 or €106). Interestingly, the pricing is more aggressive in India than in the US, where the recommended value is $149.99. That's not a situation we see often in the mobile world. The Alcatel OneTouch Watch doesn't run Android Wear as you might expect. Instead it's powered by a different solution developed by Alcatel for it. It does however work with both Android smartphones as well as iPhones, through dedicated apps. The smartwatch has a 1.22-inch 240x240 touchscreen with oleophobic coating, it's powered by the STM429 chipset, and it's got a 210 mAh battery. Also in tow is Bluetooth 4.0 support, and it has an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. Sensor-wise you get an accelerometer, an altimeter, a gyro, an e-compass, as well as a heart rate monitor. It's compatible with devices running Android 4.3 or newer and iOS 7 or later. It's 10.5mm thick, and the watch face has a diameter of 41.8mm. You'll be able to buy the Alcatel OneTouch Watch in either "sporty dark red" or "volcano black and...

OnePlus teases "something luxurious", might be a leather back cover

Sure, its phone launches may not be going very well, but OnePlus is now teasing something new. "Something luxurious", to quote the Chinese startup's official Google+ account. "Something luxurious is coming to OnePlus. What could it be?" Well, going by looks alone, the teaser image which you can see below seems to imply that we'll soon see a leather back cover for the OnePlus 2. The company's latest smartphone already has two different back cover materials available for it in the form of StyleSwap covers - which are sold on the OnePlus website. Currently these are made from wood (in three different variations) and kevlar. And now it looks like leather could be next. This would follow in the footsteps of companies such as Motorola and LG, as they've already sold smartphones bearing that particular material on their backs - think Moto X and LG G4. It's still unclear when the new back cover will become available, but since the teasing has started it's probably going to be soon. Source |...

Samsung Galaxy Mega On goes through GeekBench too

We've already heard quite a few things about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Mega On. It seems like it will be part of a new O-series of smartphones from the Korean maker, along with the Grand On. These are supposed to be the two models that will debut the new line. They've already entered India for testing purposes, and last month we've even heard a rumor detailing their specs. Now someone decided to put the Mega On through the paces of the GeekBench benchmark for Android, and this has helpfully confirmed a couple of its specs. The Galaxy Mega On that was tested has the model number SM-G6000, and it runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop at the moment. It's powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 410 SoC, just as previously leaked, but the RAM amount seems to only be 1GB. This is contrary to the 1.5GB that was rumored so far. Other specs aren't part of the benchmark's hardware information section, but going by past leaks the Mega On should sport a 5.5-inch 720p touchscreen, a 13 MP rear camera, a 5 MP front shooter, 8GB of expandable storage, and a 3,000 mAh battery. Snapdragon 620-touting Samsung device gets benchmarked

We've seen a lot of leaks originating in the databases of the various Android benchmarks lately, and this one's no exception. What's a bit different than usual is that in this case we aren't sure what device this is going to be. Rumor has it we're looking at the GeekBench hardware information section for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy A9. That said, the benchmark itself is calling the phone "samsung msm8976fhdlte-eur-open" for now. This lets us know that the device is rocking Qualcomm's Snapdragon 620 chipset at the helm. This is an SoC that will come with an octa-core CPU, pairing four high-performance Cortex-A72 cores with four battery-friendly Cortex-A53 ones. The former cluster can be clocked at up to 1.8 GHz, with the latter going up only to 1.4 GHz. The Adreno 510 GPU is in tow too. The prototype that ran GeekBench was capped at 1.4 GHz, as you can see from the screenshot above. So its results are clearly not indicative of real world performance. The benchmark has also revealed that this smartphone, possibly the Galaxy A9, will have 3GB of RAM and currently runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. If this is the A9, then expect it to also feature 4G LTE connectivity, with peak download speeds of 300Mbps and 100Mbps uploads, thanks to the built-in Qualcomm modem. Source |...

Oppo R7 Plus review: Monster truck

Bezelless it was going to be, the first of its kind, but the Oppo R7 Plus didn't quite live to the promised edge-to-edge display. Yet, you'd be foolish to dismiss it on those grounds alone, as there's so more to a smartphone than the size of its frame.

A teaser image has been published by Xiaomi, which suggests that we can expect news surrounding a new Amazfit product on September 16. Sony changes its waterproof policy, says not to fully submerge phones

Most of the recent waterproof Xperia smartphones and tablets come with the IP68-rating. This 6 translates into a dust-tight device, while the second digit - the 8 - means submersion into deeper than 1 meter clean water for 30 minutes or more. Before the Sony Xperia Z5 lineup, many of the Xperia phones were advertised with press photos showing taking selfies or group photos underwater with fully submerged devices. Those images indirectly suggested you can actually do those things. But we know Sony has been reluctant to repair devices with liquid damage. In many cases the company said the damage resulted by some of the plastic caps not being tightly closed and thus the warranty didn't apply. It turned out supporting waterproof phones is a tricky business and Sony has finally taken care of the problem by altering warranty terms and conditions. As of recently Sony does not allow full submersion underwater, no matter the kind of water. It says NOT to use any waterproof device for underwater actions, such as taking photos. Here are some excerpts of the new waterproof conditions: The IP rating of your device was achieved in laboratory conditions in standby mode, so you should not use the device underwater, such as taking pictures. Do not use the device to take photos while performing any type of activity underwater, including diving or snorkeling. Taking photos and movies in wet surroundings. Remember not to use the device underwater. If you accidentally get the device wet with non-fresh water, wash the device with tap water. Sony devices that are tested for their waterproof abilities are placed gently inside a container filled with tap water and lowered to a depth of 1.5 metres. After 30 minutes in the container, the device is gently taken out and its functions and features are tested. The rest remains the same - close all covers, if you drop your phone/slate into a pool/salt water rinse it under tap water, and that speakers and mics can stop working for up to 3 hours after water exposure. Reading further Sony still allows you to use your phone under rain, the shower or in pools where splashes of water are all around. Just not fully submerge it. And in case you do, it will most probably endure. While some people may have been overly abusive with their waterproof phones, perhaps Sony should take a large part of the blame as it made the IP rating a key selling point for its devices. Now that it has changed its policy many will certainly be disappointed, but it's better to be clear with customers about what they are getting rather than facing issues with after-sales support. For more information you should definitely visit Sony's support page. And do drop us a line in the comments section, saying whether you'd still be getting a Sony phone if it weren't for all the water fun promises. Sony |...

OnePlus CEO Carl Pei apologizes for the OnePlus 2 delay

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei has issued an apology regarding the delay of the company's second flagship, the OnePlus 2. That's a month later than the company's initial targeted shipping date, he admits. However, Carl Pei not only speaks to the customers with unfulfilled orders, but also apologizes to OnePlus employees, partners and fans. For the company's team, this has been a huge opportunity cost, while for the partners the delay has caused "unnecessary complications." OnePlus CEO didn't pinpoint the source of the delay. Despite the fact there are many more invites available, he revealed that the company plans to open up the OnePlus 2 sales for an hour in the near...

Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition finally receives Android 5.1

The now-discontinued Google Play Edition program used to pair the flagship smartphones from Android device manufacturers such as Samsung and HTC with stock Android from Google. That, however, turned out not to be a very enticing proposition for many, which is why the scheme was dropped. But before that happened certain GPE devices did launch, such as the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition. It was just like the regular S4, but with software from Google - and no TouchWiz in sight. Furthermore, there was this (now laughable) promise of "Nexus-like" delivery of software updates. That mostly has not materialized. Case in point: The S4 GPE is only now being updated to Android 5.1, build LMY47O. That particular version was first spotted on other devices back in April, believe it or not. It's unclear why it took five months or so for it to reach the Galaxy S4 GPE, but at least it's rolling out now. And once you apply this update you'll no longer be stuck on the even more ancient Android 5.0 build LRX21P, from November 2014. At this rate, we wouldn't bet on the S4 GPE getting a Marshmallow treat. Or if it does eventually receive it, be prepared to wait well into 2016 for that to happen. If you're impatient and haven't seen the update notification yet, you can head over to the Source link below to download the OTA ZIP file if you'd like to flash it manually (provided, of course, that you know how to do...

iOS 9.1 public beta is now up for grabs

It was just a few hours ago when we told you about the first beta of iOS 9.1 becoming available for developers to tinker with. And here we are now, not one day later, and the first public beta of iOS 9.1 is already up for grabs. This is the fastest we've ever seen Apple move from a developer beta release to one targeted at general consumers. It's a bit of an odd situation because iOS 9 will only be out on September 16. If you're interested in trying out iOS 9.1, you need to enroll in Apple's beta software program, after which the update notification should pop up on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. iOS 9.1 brings with it some new emoji, better performance compared to iOS 9, and some new developer APIs enabling apps to take advantage of 3D Touch and Live Photos. It also includes features for the newly unveiled iPad Pro, gaining support for the Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil. Source 1 • Source 2 | Via 1 • Via...

Android 6.0 Marshmallow won't have a dark theme

It's official, straight from a Google engineer: the upcoming Android 6.0 Marshmallow release will not come with a built-in dark theme. Many people have been hoping to see a darkened version of the Material Design UI in the final Marshmallow release because an experimental dark theme was included in the Android M developer preview. You did have to jump through some hoops in order to activate it, but as the screenshots above show, it did actually work. Unfortunately though it looks like Google has dropped any plans to make something like this part of Marshmallow. So all that fans of stock Android and dark UIs can now do is hope that the search giant will reconsider when it comes to the next version of the OS. In fact, the dark theme "may be considered for future releases", according to the same Google engineer mentioned above. Source |...

5.7-inch Galaxy S7 caught in a benchmark rocking Snapdragon 820

Just yesterday we saw an unknown Samsung device getting benchmarked sporting an Exynos 8890 chipset. The device in question was codenamed Lucky. According to a new report, this is in fact the codename for the Galaxy S7. Since 7 is considered a lucky number in many cultures, it's pretty obvious why Samsung chose to name its next flagship "Project Lucky" while it's in development. In an interesting twist, the Lucky was caught in another benchmark database today, this time rocking Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 SoC. This is no surprise, as there have been rumors claiming Samsung is testing Qualcomm's next top of the line chip and hasn't yet decided whether to use it or not. Now it seems likely that the S820 will power at least certain versions of the Galaxy S7, probably the ones destined for the US (echoing what's been going on for most of the Galaxy S line's existence, except with the S6 this year). The prototype that went through the AnTuTu benchmark today came with a 5.7-inch QHD touchscreen, a 16 MP rear camera, a 5 MP front snapper, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal storage. It ran Android 5.1.1 Lollipop at the time. So this is the bigger of the two rumored iterations for Samsung's next flagship. Qualcomm's chipset managed to beat out the Exynos 7420 as well as the Snapdragon 810 in single-threaded runs and in the 3D test. However, overall the Exynos 7420 still managed to come out on top of both of Qualcomm's contenders. Obviously though the Snapdragon 820 is still in development, so don't take these results too seriously yet. Just for fun, let's mention that Lucky's AnTuTu score was 65,775. The final version of the Galaxy S7 may have a 20 MP ISOCELL camera instead of the 16 MP unit the prototype boasts. The S7 should keep the ultrafast UFS 2.0 storage of its predecessor, but Samsung is working on getting that to work with microSD cards. Currently the UFS 2.0 memory controller isn't compatible with expandable storage. Yet the Korean company might fix that by the time the S7 arrives on the market. It's definitely not a given, though, so don't get your hopes up that the Galaxy S7 will have microSD card support. Source 1 (in Chinese) • Source 2 |...

HTC One A9 gets benchmarked with 10-core CPU and 4GB of RAM

HTC's next top of the line smartphone has been in the rumors a lot lately, and we already know it's going to be sold as the One A9. Its codename was Aero, and we may have already seen it in a leaked image. As for specs, we now have a much better idea of what to expect, because a One A9 prototype was put through the paces of the GeekBench benchmark. This has helpfully revealed a couple of key features of the device, thanks to the benchmark's information screen. The One A9 runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and is apparently powered by MediaTek's upcoming Helio X20 chipset, which comes with a deca-core CPU (that's ten cores, yes). Of those, two are going to be Cortex-A72 cores, which should perform a lot better than the Cortex-A57s in other high-end chipsets. The other eight cores will be Cortex-A53, divided into two different clusters for maximum performance with minimum power drain. The chipset will be aided by 4GB of RAM, which is now the norm for any flagship offering worth its salt. It's also going to have support for LTE Cat.6 networks, with theoretical peak download speeds of up to 300Mbps, as well as 50Mbps uploads. The Helio X20 has outperformed every competitor out there in the multi-core benchmark, having a score of 5884, more than even Samsung's Exynos 7420, the current benchmark champion. The One A9 might become official at a special event on September 29, which HTC's already announced. That could also be when we'll see the Butterfly 3 making its debut. Source (in Chinese) |...

With the new version, Office gains real-time collaboration, as well as OneDrive attachments in Outlook, among many other things. The first preview of Office 2016 came out in February, and it got a public release in May. For companies which subscribe to Office 365 ProPlus, the subscription version of the suite, there will be a new update model added. This will be called Current Branch for Business and it will deliver three cumulative feature updates per year, along with monthly security updates. Moto X Force will be sold by Verizon as the Droid Turbo 2

Verizon is set to update its Droid-branded lineup at some point before the end of the year. So far we've heard pretty conclusively that what's known internationally as the Moto X Play will be sold by the carrier under the Droid Maxx 2 moniker. Big Red has, however, also been rumored to get a proper high-end sequel to last year's Droid Turbo - the Droid Turbo 2. Up until now however not much was known about this handset. Thanks to the leaked image you can see above, it's clear that the Moto X Force will be launched by the carrier as the Droid Turbo 2. The Moto X Force is codenamed Bounce, and it's been in the rumors a few times recently. According to previously leaked specs, the Moto X Force will have a 5.43-inch QHD touchscreen, a 21 MP rear camera with dual-LED flash, a 5 MP selfie shooter with a LED flash of its own, 3GB of RAM, 32 or 64GB of storage, and a huge 3,760 mAh battery. It's going to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 chipset. Intriguingly, it's said to be "shatterproof", which might imply that it will sport some kind of military MIL-STD rating for shock resistance. We expect the Droid Turbo 2 to carry the exact same specs. It seems like it's going to be identical to the Moto X Force in terms of looks too, except for the prominent Verizon branding on the front and Droid branding on the back. This isn't surprising, though, as Big Red is always quick to plaster its logos onto all possible sides of its phones. Source |...

Android Pay is now rolling out in the US

Google is announcing that Android Pay will start rolling out in the US today. The new payment scheme was made official at Google I/O a few months back, and now it's finally becoming available. The company warns that the rollout will be gradual and it will take a few days. You need the new Android Pay app that will be out in the Play Store soon. It's going to show up as an update to the old Google Wallet app if you have that installed. The system works with any device that runs Android 4.4 KitKat or newer and has NFC. Tokenization is used for security, so your real card's number is never sent with your payment. A virtual account number is used instead. In terms of credit card support, you'll be able to add yours regardless of whether it's American Express, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa. Google is quickly adding more and more banks to Android Pay, but for now your account needs to be at American Express, Bank of America, Discover, Navy Federal Credit Union, PNC, Regions Bank, USAA, or U.S. Bank. Citi and Wells Fargo will be available within a few days, with Capital One and others "coming soon". As for locations in which you can actually use Android Pay to buy stuff, there are apparently already over a million of those across the country. In the future, Android Pay will also let you pay for stuff you buy online from your apps, and it will store your many different loyalty cards and special offers in one convenient...

Sailfish OS 2.0 can now be previewed by early access users

Today marks a big step forward for Jolla and its ambitious Sailfish mobile OS project. The new version 2.0 of the platform appears is already available to early access users. So, if you own a Jolla phone and participate in the beta program, which you really should if you have decided to back such a start-up initiative to begin with, you should be getting a notification for the update. Actually, just to be as precise as possible, the said OTA isn't exactly 2.0. It has a version of 1.1.9 and is designed as an experimental roll-out beta. It does, however, contain most of the important changes that will shape version 2.0 and if the open test goes well, the update will be followed up quickly with a proper 2.0 version with a full-on roll out. The most apparent part of the current update is the redesigned main interface, which is now executed in carousel manner. You can now simply swipe left or right to go between the Home and Events interfaces. The App Grid is also easily accessible from any interface by swiping over the bottom edge of the screen. The Events interface itself has also gotten richer with a weather widget with five day forecast a calendar and enhanced notification handling. Notifications can now be grouped together and managed in a more natural way. Furthermore, the distinction between native app and Android app notifications is getting smaller as both can be grouped and the latter now also wake up the device screen. Other notable changes include a new swipe gesture over the top of the display, which brings out the Top menu with lock action and a selection of ambiences. Also, the layout of a lot of core applications have undergone an overhaul, including Calendar, Jolla Store, Clock, Email and Camera. This also includes their cover layouts. Special layout, controls and even three-finger gestures for bigger screens across Saifish 2.0 are also an important new addition that prepares the platform for the Jolla tablet launch. The full changelog is actually quite thorough and can be viewed at the source link, along with instructions for updating your Jolla...

Tizen-based Samsung Z3 allegedly passes through FCC, coming soon

Tizen found some success with the Z1, now the successor, Samsung Z3, is nearing launch. The project is reportedly overseen personally by the Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics and passed through the FCC yesterday. Of course, the US is probably not the primary target of the Z3. A few months ago the scuttlebutt was that Bangladesh, Nepal and India (where the phone was imported for testing) will be the initial stomping grounds of the Tizen-powered smartphone. A week from now the Tizen Developer Conference kicks off in Shenzhen and it's expected that the Samsung Z3 will there. It's possible that it will launch alongside the Tizen-powered Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch. Those two should bring a new major version of Tizen (v3.0). Other than that, the Samsung Z3 is epxcted to have a 5" 720p screen, Snapdragon 410 chipset with 1GB of RAM (1.5GB maybe) and 8GB of storage, 8MP + 5MP cameras (or 5MP + 2MP, not certain). Some of the innovative iPhone features we've seen before

The only thing that's changed is everything. Apple's iPhone 6s/6s Plus marketing slogan is about as true as they come. Certainly more believable than that other catch phrase "most advanced smartphones in the world". Only, the changes being advertised are about as new to a smartphone as the wheel is to human kind. Apple's list kicks off with 3D Touch, and we're inclined to vote that one in its favor. Originally conceived as Force Touch (even senior VP of software Craig Federighi let his tongue slip once at yesterday's keynote), it was already introduced on the latest MacBook Pro and Apple Watch. Sure, there were developments in the field years ago by Synaptics, but they never made it to mass production. And though Apple was rumored for months to be working on the feature for this generation iPhone, the company was still beaten to market by Chinese heavyweights Huawei with the Mate S and ZTE with the Axon Mini. Obviously, those two won't come anywhere near the iPhone 6s sales, but timing robbed Apple from being first on this one. 7000 series aluminum we haven't seen used on a smartphone, and bicycle frames are the first thing that comes to mind, though Apple does quote the aerospace industry as the primary customer. Either way, the aluminum-zinc alloy must be pretty strong. Whether other phone manufacturers don't go into specifics on the matter, or Apple is actually the only one to use it, we can't know. The truth is, not a word would have been heard on the precise type of alloy, had Apple designed a proper frame for the previous generation that negates the effect of stress concentration around the button cutouts. Sapphire crystal was the next big thing to stand between your display and the adverse outer world, Apple would have had you believe until a while ago. Then the world intervened and Sapphire turned out not to be so easy to manufacture on the scale Apple needed it, so double ion exchange glass is the next next big thing. Which, for all we know, is to be found on the non-S iPhone 6, too. How exactly the 2nd generation Touch ID is different from the first is unclear. It worked pretty great from the get go, and there was so little room for improvement, that the only PR statement this year is that it's twice as fast. We don't buy it. The "incredible, all-new" 12MP iSight camera is perhaps the easiest target for mockery, and not because it's bad. We haven't tested it yet for obvious reasons, but we expect it to be every bit as good as it's advertised. It's just that it took Apple years to acknowledge that the world has moved on from the state it was in 2011, when the iPhone 4s debuted the 8MP camera that stayed on for 4 generations iPhones. Not to mention that the Nokia N8 already had a 12MP camera a year before said iPhone, yet a year later than the Samsung Pixon12, all the way back in 2009. And that doesn't even graze the fact that you can buy a brand-name Chinese phone with a more than capable 12MP camera for a tenth of the price of an iPhone 6s. That is, an iPhone 6s that makes any sense, meaning a 64GB version, but that's an entirely different issue. And how about 4K video recording. Qualcomm brought the feature to prominence with the Snapdragon 800, which made it to market two years ago with the likes of the Nokia Lumia 1520 and Samsung Galaxy Note 3. You could argue that Apple didn't anticipate the competition was working on 2160p recording (hard to imagine them being so oblivious) and had no time to react on the iPhone 5s. Why not then do something for the iPhone 6? Oh, it didn't have the necessary pixels on the 8MP sensor, which it had to use for a fourth generation in a row. The front FaceTime camera is now a 5MP unit, Apple is keeping up with the times in this respect. Yes, there are 13MP front shooters, but they tend to be installed in midrange devices and flagships are more conservative. The Retina Flash feature, which fires up the display to assist in the darkest shootng conditions, sounds familiar, though. Could it be that we've seen it before, perhaps on the LG G Pro 2, to name one? And that one had it in its native camera app, but there are countless apps both in the Google Play store and the Apple App Store that do more or less the same thing. Though if front flash photography was all that important to Apple, an actual front flash would have...

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus feature 2GB of RAM

As is usually the case with iPhone and iPad announcements, Apple stayed mum about the amount of RAM that inside its latest products. Now, we don't have to wait for teardowns to reveal this information thanks to an Apple Support employee. He has revealed in a Reddit thread that the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus come with 2GB of RAM. This was also continuously suggested by rumors months prior to the unveil. The rest of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus internals include the latest Apple A9 64-bit chip with updated graphics and CPU performance. Adobe confirms Apple iPad Pro has 4GB of RAM

While previous iPads were mostly geared for content consumption, the Apple iPad Pro will try to capture content creators. Microsoft and Adobe have announced software suites for it, but an interesting detail snuck into Adobe's announcement. The iPad Pro has an Apple A9X chipset with 4GB of RAM. Four! That's double what the iPad Air 2 had, which in turn had double the RAM of other iDevices (iPhones and older iPads). With Apple getting more serious with split-screen multitasking and heavier apps - Photoshop Sketch, Adobe Comp and other Creative Cloud apps - there's just no way to get around the need for more RAM. Editing those 4K videos is no light task either. There's no info on the iPhones 6s duo though, they may still be at 1GB. There are speculations of 2GB but no proof so far. Source |...

These are the official accessories for the new iPhone 6s and iPad Pro

Yesterday, Apple launched the new iPhones - the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus - along with a brand new iPad Pro. Usually, Apple also has a bunch of new accessories to go with their new products, and they have this time too, including some cases, keyboard covers, and docks. iPhone 6s Leather and Silicone Case Apple added a bunch of color options to its range of leather and silicon cases for the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. The leather range now includes Midnight Blue, Saddle Brown, Rose Gray, Brown, and Black. The Silicon range now includes White, Charcoal Gray, Stone, Antique White, Blue, Turquoise, Midnight Blue, Lavender, Pink, Red, and Orange. The leather cases are available for $45 and the silicone cases for $35. It must be noted that these cases don't work with the older iPhone 6 and 6 Plus as they are designed for the slightly thicker bodies of the new iPhones. iPhone Lightning Dock The iPhone 6s now gets a new dock that you can just put your phone in on the desk and charge it. The docks come in the same four colors as the phone, gold, silver, space gray, and the new rose gold, and are machined out of solid aluminum. The dock connects via the Lightning connector and has a headphone out at the back to route audio out of your phone for connecting to speakers or headphones. The Lightning Dock is priced at $49 and works with both the new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus and also older iPhones and iPod touch with the Lightning connector. Apple Pencil Apple created a new stylus specifically designed to work with the new iPad Pro. Called the Apple Pencil, the stylus is actively powered and features pressure sensitivity and tilt detection. You can press on it to adjust the thickness of the strokes and tilt it to produce wider strokes. The iPad Pro has been optimized for the Pencil and scans its signal at 240Hz instead of the standard 120Hz for fingers. The Pencil has an internal battery that charges via a Lightning connector and has to be plugged directly into the iPad Pro. The battery provides 12 hours of use with a full charge and around 30 minutes after just 15 seconds of charging. Apple has optimized its Notes and Mail app in iOS 9 to fully support all the features of the Pencil, the third party app Paper also supports it completely, with more app support coming in later. You can purchase the Apple Pencil for $99. Smart Keyboard Along with the new iPad Pro Apple also announced the Smart Keyboard, which functions as a keyboard, stand, and a cover, all in one. The keyboard builds upon Apple's original Smart Cover design, but folds out to reveal a keyboard instead. The keyboard has the full set of keys you'd expect on a Mac and a set of shortcuts that you can use with iOS 9. The keyboard surface is made out of custom-woven fabric that is stain and spill resistant. It employs a standard membrane switch with the fabric providing the tension and feedback. If you fold the keyboard it also acts as a stand for tilting the iPad Pro at a lower angle for watching movies. Lastly, you could just open it completely to protect the display like a cover. The keyboard attaches magnetically but uses the new Smart Connector on the iPad Pro to transfer data. The Smart Keyboard is priced at $169 and only available for the iPad...

ЕЕ, Vodafone, O2, Three and Tesco will carry the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus in the UK

The new iPhone duo has been official for a few hours now and eager fans are already looking into their options for upgrading. There is still some waiting to be done as pre-orders are set for September 12 and availability for September 25, but that only means now is the perfect time to think things over and decide on an action plan. The most straightforward approach, of course, would be to buy an unlocked unit from Apple. The iPhone 6s will start at £539 and go up to £619 and £699 for the 64GB and 128GB versions. The 6 Plus is priced at £619, £699 and £789, respectively. However, most users are probably finding those prices way too high and are looking to take advantage of a carrier-subsidized deal for an on-contract unit. Most major UK carriers were quick to act and have already announced that they will be offering the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. The list includes: Three, O2, Vodafone, Tesco Mobile and also EE, which means that EE's subbrands - Orange and T-Mobile will most-likely be offering the devices as well. On-contract prices are yet to be announced, but should be revealed in the next few days. It is also already clear that Three, O2 and EE will be offering prepaid deals for the Cupertino devices as well. Last, but not least, it is worth noting that Carphone Warehouse, one of UK's leading unlocked device vendors will also be offering the iPhone duo. No prices have been stated there either, but they shouldn't be very different from the aforementioned Apple quotes. Source 1 | Source 2 | Source 3 | Source 4 | Source 5 | Source...

Trumpeting the Xperia Z5 series' 2 day battery life, the company's tweet also included link to a Sony website that's intended to help iOS users make a switch. If you aren't in the know, the Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact, and Z5 Premium, that were unveiled last week, have already received a price cut. It looks like Apple accidentally revealed that the freshly announced iPhone 6s features 1,715 mAh battery. The component was revealed in the Cupertino giant's promo video for the smartphone. This means that the new iPhone 6s features a smaller battery than its predecessor, iPhone 6, which offers a 1,810 mAh solution. However, despite the smaller unit, Apple claims that iPhone 6s will offer similar battery endurance as the model it replaces, thanks to more efficient CPU and iOS 9. A smaller battery in the new iPhone is hardly a surprise. Even though it looks the same as the outgoing model, iPhone 6s features rearranged internals that accommodate the new tech it offers. We reckon that some of the new components required the change in battery...

LG's upcoming Nexus 5X now leaks in black, has specs rumored again

Another day, another Nexus leak. This time around we're treated to what is purported to be the first leaked image showing the LG Nexus 5X in black. This reportedly is a shot of an internal slide from the Korean company, and it reveals that the codename for the new Nexus by LG was Project N3. That kind of makes sense, since this would be the third Nexus that LG's made. As with the pictures of the white model, the fingerprint sensor is in the same location underneath the camera, while the LED flash and the laser autofocus are both on the same side of it. Alongside this shot, we also get another round of rumored specs for the Nexus 5X. It's said to come with a 5.2-inch 1080p touchscreen, a 12.3 MP rear camera, a 5 MP selfie snapper, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 808 chipset at the helm (with a hexa-core CPU), 2GB of RAM, 32 or 64GB of storage, and a 2,700 mAh battery. Support for LTE Cat.6 will be built-in apparently, which means maximum theoretical download speeds of 300Mbps, and 50Mbps uploads. The software will obviously be Android 6.0 Marshmallow, as the Nexus 5X will be one of the two handsets that version will debut on (with the much talked about Huawei Nexus phablet being the other). The two devices are expected to become official on September 29 at a special event, though Google hasn't sent out any invites yet. Of course you should have had a grain of salt nearby for this, as it's nothing but a rumor. However, it's one that corroborates the design of the phone that was leaked before as well as most of the specs. Source (in Italian) | Via (in...

Apple officially unveils the iPhone 6s with 3D Touch display

At today's Apple event the company pulled the wraps off the iPhone 6s. The phone keeps the exterior of its predecessor, but features all new internals and some nice new extras. Those include a new processor, updated cameras at the front and back, and a pressure sensitive 3D Touch display. 3D Touch In addition to multitouch, the new iPhone 6s recognizes force. It works on the homescreen and gives you shortcuts on the stuff you do frequently. Pressing lightly on an email thread, gives you a preview of the message, for example. It also provides distinct and tactile feedback to your presses. Under the display, there's a vibrating "Taptic engine", which is similar to the one found on the Macbook trackpad and on the Apple Watch. Otherwise, the display is the same 4.7" Retina display found on the iPhone 6. A9 chipset Debuting on the iPhone 6s is the Apple A9 chipset. It's the ocmpany's third generation 64-bit chipset and offers up to 90% faster console-class GPU as well as up to 70% faster CPU performance, according to the company. It also offers new transistor architecture, which Apple is yet to expand upon. The M9 co-processor is also updated. However, we're yet to find out how it has been improved. New 12MP iSight camera The iPhone 6s features Apple's all new 12MP iSight camera. It features 50% more pixels as well as 50% more focus pixels. The new 12MP camera can now shoot 4K video, too. Interestingly, the front-facing camera is now 5MP and uses the LCD display as a true-tone flash. There's a special chip inside the iPhone 6s, which drives the display up to 3x brighter in order to provide the best possible lighting for your selfies. 2-nd generation TouchID It's two times faster than the first generation TouchID, as per Phill Schiller. Enhanced connectivity The iPhone 6s ships with LTE Advanced as well as twice as fast Wi-Fi. The latter is probably thanks to MiMo antenna technology inside, but that hasn't been confirmed just yet. Accessories Apple also unveiled new accessories - a bunch of leather and silicone cases. There's also a new charging dock, which will be offered in the same four colors as the iPhone 6s. Pricing The Apple iPhone 6s will be priced just like the iPhone 6. In the US, the phone will cost $199 for the 16GB model with a two-year contract. The 64GB and 128GB ones will retail for $299 and $399, respectively. Pre-orders start September 12, while sales commence on September 25. The phone will launch in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong and Japan....

The new Apple TV has a Bluetooth remote with touch and Siri

At its event today Apple didn't only introduce new phones and tablets. The new Apple TV made its debut as well. The new set top box comes with an innovative remote that has a glass touch surface on the top, which lets you glide across lists, hopefully making the task of navigating the interface easier than it's been before. Touch interaction is also employed when you want to skip ahead in a movie or TV show you're watching. The remote comes with Siri built-in too, and you can talk to her and ask her things with a dedicated button. If you're looking for something to watch, Siri searches through iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, HBO, and Showtime. You're also able to ask Siri stuff while you're watching something, including things related to the content you're seeing such as "Who stars in this?". In these cases, Siri will answer in the lower part of the TV interface, so as not to disturb your viewing. Commands like "Siri, skip ahead 5 minutes" work too. Apple Music is now a feature in Apple TV, and there's an app store for access to even more stuff. You have access to your photos, and new high-res video screensavers are included. Games are a big part of the new Apple TV platform, and the new remote acts as a gamepad when needed. Expect to see Apple TV versions of a lot of popular iOS games soon, as well as some exclusive titles. For some reason, you'll be able to do shopping on your Apple TV if you want to, with big images of clothes, for example, showing up on your TV. Upcoming apps will be responsible for this. The new Apple TV has a 64-bit A8 chip. The remote works via Bluetooth 4.0 and has an accelerometer, a gyro, three-month battery life with normal use, and the Lightning port for charging. For the 32GB version of the set top box you'll have to pay $149, while the 64GB model will retail for $199. They will both be out in late October in over 80 countries, with 100 countries getting the new Apple TV by the end of the year. Interestingly, the existing Apple TV will still be sold for $69. Developers will get their hands on the new version of tvOS today, so they can start working on those...
