Researchers say Android's factory reset feature flawed

Next time when you sell, recycle, or, retire your Android smartphone after performing a factory reset, keep in mind that the device may still contain some you thought you destroyed. That's because researchers at Cambridge University have found that the OS' factory reset feature is flawed and doesn't work as intended. The feature was tested on 21 smartphones (sold by five manufacturers) running Google's mobile OS version 2.3.x to 4.3, and it was found that all devices retained at least some portion of the old data, including images, videos, SMS, emails, as well as contact information stored in phone app and third-party apps like Facebook and WhatsApp. What's worth mentioning is that the researchers were able to access this data even if the device was protected with full-disk encryption. Additionally, in majority of the cases (around 80%), they were also able to retrieve the master token which is required to access Google user data. Based on the experiment, it was estimated that around a whopping 500 million Android phones are at risk. The complete findings are available in a research paper titled Security Analysis of Android Factory Resets (click the Source link below). Source |...

Gionee Elife E8's rear camera tipped to have lossless zoom

Two new Gionee Elife E8 teaser images have been released, focusing on the features of its camera. One image of the device is showing the gold finish on its back along with the alleged 23MP camera with dual-tone LED flash. Below it sits a fingerprint sensor. The audio port is visible on the top in the center, while the microUSB port sits on its bottom. The speaker mesh rests just above the bottom, while the rear microphones are placed on top. The 23MP image sensor of Gionee Elife E8 might offer lossless zoom, which was first spotted in Nokia Lumia 1020. With lossless zoom, magnification into the screen to get a better frame results in a negligible loss in quality. Yesterday we reported about a purported render of the upcoming Gionee Elife E8 showcasing a metal body. Besides that, the buzz around the E8 is focused on the 23MP camera which is rumored to interpolate photos to 100MP. Previous reports suggest that the Elife E8 will feature a 2K AMOLED display, MediaTek MT5795 chipset with octa-core CPU, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of built-in storage, and 3,250mAh battery. Tipped to have a thickness of 9.6mm, the E8 will run Amigo 3.0 UI based on Android 5.0...

Mozilla backtracks on its $25 smartphone plan

Over a year after announcing it, Mozilla has given up on its plan to develop a $25 Firefox OS smartphone. The revelation was made by CEO Chris Beard in an email to employees. "We have not seen sufficient traction for a $25 phone," he said, adding that "We will focus on efforts that provide a better user experience, rather than focusing on cost alone." However, that doesn't mean that the company will only focus on high-end devices, as Beard also made it clear that they will continue "exploring the feature phone opportunity." In an effort to give Firefox OS a boost, Mozilla is also thinking on implementing Android app compatibility. However, rather than allowing all Android apps, Beard said the effort would only be limited to "a few key apps." Finally, stressing that the focus remains on FFOS, the CEO said, "We will aggressively invest in the Firefox OS...

Microsoft and Xiaomi eyeing Blackberry acquisition, report says

Nearly a couple of months after Blackberry surprised the market with a small profit for the fiscal fourth quarter, there are new reports that it is being eyed as an acquisition target. According to a report from DigiTimes, several companies including Microsoft, Xiaomi, Huawei, and Lenovo are interested in taking over the Canadian company. The Redmond-based software giant is said to be the frontrunner as the company has even requested investment firms to evaluate the possibility of an acquisition deal. While Microsoft's interest in BlackBerry stems from the fact that the latter's focus on software services is in line with its own offerings, Chinese companies looking for a possible deal are aiming to strengthen their presence in the US and Europe, the report notes. Google reportedly working on new Android for Internet of Things

It's worth mentioning that the current threshold for the Google's mobile operating system is 512MB. However, it isn't yet clear how the new project will fit within the framework of Nest (Google's home automation business). Analyst says Apple could sell 36 million Watch units in first year

The sales of Apple Watch could reach the 36 million mark in the first year of its availability, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. It's worth mentioning that Huberty had earlier said that Apple would sell 30 million units of the smartwatch in the first 12 months. The new figure from Huberty is based on polling, where-in only those who said that they will definitely buy the wearable were taken into account. The prediction also makes an assumption that around half of the buyers will be in the US. "US Apple Watch demand increased around 60 percent since March," she said. "Importantly, Apple enjoyed the biggest increase in Watch purchase intentions post making the product available in mid-April. While the survey data extrapolates to 50 million annual Watch demand, we see this as a bull case given supply limitations." This comes just a day after research firm KGI Securities lowered its annual shipment estimates for the device by...

HTC said to cut One M9 component orders by 30%

HTC seems to not be selling as many One M9 units worldwide as it had anticipated before the device's launch. While exact numbers are hard to come by, we assume the Taiwanese company would have publicly bragged if it had reached some impressive milestones. Instead, HTC is now rumored to be cutting component orders for the One M9 by 30%. This obviously means it's not moving enough phones to justify keeping the current component order levels. The information allegedly comes from "sources at Taiwan's handset supply chain", so do take it with a small pinch of salt. Then again, the situation it describes does not feel at all implausible. The aforementioned sources go on to claim that sales of the One M9 have been "flat", because it basically looks exactly like its predecessor and doesn't have any distinguishing hardware features when compared to its direct competitors. On top of all that, Chinese vendors such as Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Lenovo, and Coolpad are all attacking HTC's lower-tier models, thus making it harder for the company to sell more entry-level and midrange offerings. So things aren't going that well at HTC. On May 20, its share price dropped to a ten-year low on the Taiwan Stock...

iPhone 5c with Touch ID sensor spotted on Apple website

Apple recently introduced its official Lightning dock. On this accessory's page over on the Apple store website, there are a handful of pictures showing the company's various smartphones attached to the dock. That's where the image you can see on the left shows up. This is a device that looks like the iPhone 5c from two years ago, but it clearly has the Touch ID fingerprint sensor embedded in its Home button - which the iPhone 5c doesn't. This naturally leads us to wonder whether this is simply a render created by mistake by an Apple employee (who maybe forgot about the lack of Touch ID on the iPhone 5c), or if it's something more. See, an iPhone 6c has long been rumored over the past few months, and it was said to come later this year with a 4-inch touchscreen just like the 5c before it. The Touch ID fingerprint scanner was featured in the rumors as a given for the new affordable model, by the way. Yet given how secretive Apple usually likes to be about its future handsets, it's more likely that this is nothing but an...

Samsung Galaxy A8 to come with a 5.5-inch screen after all

The Samsung Galaxy A8 is the most recent member of the A-series, yet to become official. It's position at the top of the lineup led to suspicions that a 5.7-inch screen would be used, but a GFXBench listing aims to refute that claim. According to the entry on the benchmark's website the Galaxy A8 will come with a 5.5-inch 1080p display, the same as the one used in the Galaxy A7. The device will bring a few of the specs up a notch, compared to the A7 and the 16MP camera is one such improvement, confirmed by the listing. The rest of the specs are very much in line with previous info and include a Snapdragon 615 chipset, though its processor is clocked somewhat unusually at 1.4GHz. 2GB of RAM are on board and internal storage is 16GB, of which 12GB are left to the user. Obviously, the benchmark doesn't reveal if the Galaxy A8 will come with a fingerprint sensor as suggested before. However, with such modest changes over the A7 elsewhere, the key feature would make sense to justify the higher model number. Source |...

Elephone P8000 packs a 4,200 cell and 3GB of RAM for $210

Elephone is among the emerging Chinese manufacturers that aims to make a name for itself by offering affordable, yet well-equipped smartphones. The upcoming P8000 is one such example and it offers plenty of bang for the buck. The smartphone's chief claim to fame is its worldwide LTE support, a rarity with less prominent Chinese offerings. The functionality is delivered by Mediatek's MT6753 chipset, announced a few months ago. It is basically an underclocked version of the more popular MT6752, and the octa-core processor within it ticks at 1.5GHz. Much like the P7000 which it doesn't replace, but rather complements, the P8000 is built around a 1080p 5.5-inch display. Elephone has fitted the P8000 with 3GB of RAM, though internal storage is less impressive at 16GB. A microSD slot hasn't been quoted by the source, but the P7000 has it, and we expect the P8000 to come with one as well. Elephone P8000 It doesn't stop there and the Elephone P8000 packs an ample 4,200mAh battery. A 13MP main camera, joined by a 5MP selfie shooter takes care of capturing memories, and a fingerprint sensor on the back is another welcome tick on the specsheet. The device runs Android 5.0 Lollipop upon launch, but the best part is that according to the source, all of the above will set you back a mere $210. Source |...

OnePlus 2 apparently got benchmarked today

The OnePlus 2 is due to arrive to eager fans sometime during the third quarter of this year, according to the company's CEO. Before the official unveiling happens, though, it seems like a prototype of the device got put through the paces of Geekbench today. If this is indeed the OnePlus 2, then it's the first we've seen of it in benchmarks. Although Geekbench lists its name as OnePlus One, the model number is different. The actual OnePlus One has the model name A0001, while this one is A2001. Furthermore, the MSM8994 board listed corresponds to Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 chipset, which has been rumored to be inside the OnePlus 2. The OnePlus One, on the other hand, is powered by the Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974). The processor inside the Snapdragon 810 definitely goes further than 1.55 GHz, so clearly this benchmark was performed with a cap at that speed. Geekbench correctly lists eight cores for the CPU. The only other thing we learn about the OnePlus 2 from this is that it will have 3GB of RAM just like its predecessor. That may perhaps be disappointing to people who expected it to take advantage of the fact that the Snapdragon 810 is a 64-bit chipset and boast 4GB of memory. The OnePlus 2 prototype currently runs Android 5.1 Lollipop. That said, the finished product will almost certainly not ship running Cyanogen OS like its predecessor. In its place we're bound to find OnePlus' own Oxygen OS, also based on Android of course. The next OnePlus flagship could cost around $400. A more affordable handset is also in the pipeline, and should get a release by the end of this year. Source |...

Motorola Droid Turbo to receive Lollipop update in mid-June

Motorola hasn't yet been able to roll out a Lollipop update for the Droid Turbo model it's made exclusively for Verizon. Thankfully though, we've heard that the handset will be taken straight to Android 5.1 Lollipop, so you won't see an intermediary 5.0 update. If you own a Droid Turbo you may be wondering when to expect Lollipop to finally arrive for your device. According to a Verizon test engineer, that will happen sometime in mid-June. The aforementioned individual is already running a pre-release Android 5.1 version of the software for the Droid Turbo, as evidenced by the image you can see to the left. He also says the delay in getting the update to this smartphone has most to do with Verizon's nationwide HD voice feature, Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE), as well as its use of band 4 LTE. To work properly with the new software, all of these need to be tested extensively. Apparently the handover between Big Red's 3G and 4G networks is especially tricky to sort out, with even Qualcomm getting involved by outing certain patches for its components. On the other hand, Motorola itself doesn't have as many people working on updates, or comparable budgets for this endeavor as bigger smartphone makers such as Samsung or Apple. From the same source comes some information about a future Motorola handset, which could be the next Moto X. This is said to come with a front-facing LED flash for selfies, and a microSD card slot. These features should arrive during the summer, which incidentally is also when Motorola is expected to unveil its next flagship. Source |...

The new firmwares are currently available only over the air, but we expect those to pop up soon at Sony PC Companion as well. Various user reports suggest the update is now live in Bolivia, Bangladesh, Taiwan, Hong Kong, among others. We guess more markets will be joining those very soon. Samsung CEO denies Galaxy Note 5 July launch rumors

Samsung's CEO J.K. Shin denied the recent rumors regarding the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy Note 5. Earlier some reports suggested the Galaxy S6 is doing underwhelming on the market. The rumors continued that the low sales may lead to early release of the upcoming Galaxy Note 5 this July and thus beating the Apple iPhone 6S Plus. The latter was lined with another rumor for Samsung showcasing Note 5 prototypes to its partners. Today, Samsung's CEO denied those rumors officially. He said the Galaxy S6 is doing great on the market, its sales have recently surpassed the 10 million units milestone. As far as the Galaxy Note 5 is concerned J.K. Shin denied Samsung sending prototypes to partners in order to prep them for an early release. It seems Samsung won't be changing its September cycle. So, Samsung seems to be happy with its Galaxies performance and won't be doing things differently this year, at least for now. A recent report suggested Samsung may be introducing another curved screen device this summer, which won't be an S6 or Note 5. Oppo R7 and R7 Plus officially announced

As expected, Oppo has just unveiled the highly anticipated pair of high end smartphones, the R7 and the R7 Plus. At a dedicated event held in Beijing, the company highlighted its 10-year history and proceeded to announce the flagship duo. Both phones were regular visitors to the rumor mill and making them official brought little changes. The smaller one comes with a 5.0-inch AMOLED display of 1080p resolution behind 2.5D glass. The R7 Plus sports a 6-inch screen of the same resolution, which stretches edge to edge for that striking bezelless look. Computing power comes courtesy of a Qualcomm 615 chipset with a 64-bit octa-core processor and 3GB RAM. Oppo claims that anything below that amount is limiting nowadays. Built-in storage is 16GB on the R7 and 32GB on the Plus, and a microSD slot is available if you are willing to live without the second SIM slot. The R7 Plus comes with a 13MP main camera which utilizes an ISOCELL RGBW sensor. The company promises 78% less noise and 32% more light gathering capability. Phase detection autofocus and a single-LED flash complete the picture. As part of the launch event for the R7 and R7 Plus handsets, held today, Oppo also officially unveiled the latest version of its own Color OS. This next major update is based on Android Lollipop and aims to bring Google's improved experience to the company's device line. But, while the OS is being showcased alongside Oppo's brand new devices, a beta build already exists for the Oppo Find 7 and 7a, so we already have a pretty good idea as to what is has to offer. The most apparent changes to Color OS are to the UI. The new Lollipop base has inspired a move to a new, flatter and simpler design. The design has also become brighter and a lot more dynamic. Icons have been redesigned as well. This includes the system apps, as well as custom icons for about 200 popular apps, so, you can expect a uniform look and feel across the launcher. But Color OS 2.1 also has a lot more to show than a new prettier interface. Under the hood, the OS has undergone a lot of changes to make it faster and more responsive. Oppo boasts a reduced boot time, from 31 seconds in Color OS 2.0 to just 19 seconds in the new version. The platform is also said to be optimized for faster app launches, as well as several popular third-party applications, which should be a lot more-fluid. Naturally, both new handsets will run Color OS 2.1 out-of-the-box and we are fairly certain that the aforementioned Find 7 and Find 7a will get the OTA pretty soon. Availability for other Oppo devices is not clear yet, but judging from the company's track record, they should get an equal share of...

Three new colors for the Droid Turbo will be out on May 28

Motorola's Droid Turbo for Verizon is still a top of the line offering, even by today's standards. And while it isn't running Android Lollipop yet (though it's said to get updated to version 5.1 directly), it will be offered in three new colors starting on May 28. This isn't the first time Verizon and Motorola have launched new color variations for the Droid Turbo, so it's becoming something of a tradition. That said, owners of the handset would probably prefer software support to be better. Anyway, in the image above you can see all three new variants. The 'base' color version is Gray Ballistic Nylon in all cases, what changes are the metallic highlights. You'll be able to choose from Metallic Blue, Metallic Orange, and Metallic Violet for those accents. The new options are going to be available on May 28 both online and in Verizon stores. To grab either one, you'll need to shell out $499.99 if you want to pay "full retail price". Otherwise, you can choose the Edge plan, paying nothing upfront, then followed by 24 monthly installments of $20.83. For a limited time, Verizon is offering $150 or more if you recycle your old phone (which must be in working condition) and purchase a Droid Turbo on the Edge plan. And if you bring your number to Verizon and activate a new smartphone on Edge, you can also receive a $100 bill credit within 2-3 billing cycles. The Droid Turbo models boasting the new colors will have the same internals as all the other versions. So we're talking about a 5.2-inch QHD display, 21 MP rear camera, 2 MP selfie cam, Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chipset with 2.7 GHz quad-core Krait CPU, 3GB of RAM, and a 3,900 mAh...

HTC One ME9's metal frame gets pictured in leaked render

After the One M9, One M9+, and the new J Butterfly, we're soon going to see yet another high-end smartphone from HTC. This has been leaked so far as the One ME9, which despite how odd it sounds might end up being the official moniker for the device. Today a new purported leaked render claims to show us the One ME9's metal frame in all its glory. Despite using this casing, the phone's back cover will be made from polycarbonate, so this will not be another metal unibody construction. In terms of specs, the One ME9 is expected to come with a 5.2-inch QHD touchscreen, 20 MP rear camera, 4 MP UltraPixel selfie snapper or a 13 MP sensor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of built-in storage, and a 2,900 mAh battery. MediaTek's MT6795 SoC will be doing all the hard work, and it sports a 2.2 GHz octa-core CPU. BoomSound stereo speakers will be in, as well as a fingerprint scanner embedded in the Home button. The One ME9 will run Android 5.0 Lollipop with Sense 7 on top. It should be offered in "Classic Rose Gold", "Gold Sepia", and "Meteor Gray" when it finally launches in July. The smartphone is apparently not going to be offered in the US and European markets, instead only getting a release in parts of Asia. The price is said to be around CNY 3,500, which means about $563 or...

Crowdfunding for the American launch of YotaPhone 2 is live

Russian company Yota is preparing for the North American launch of its unique dual-display YotaPhone, now in its second generation. To raise both funds and publicity for the release, the company has just started an Indiegogo campaign. It's going pretty well too, with 75% percent of the $50,000 target raised within the first hour after the launch. The featured $500 pledge nets you a YotaPhone 2 with a free bumper case and a 3-month BookMate subscription to put that electronic paper display to good use. There's at least a $100 value in grabbing one of those, as the company cites a retail price of $600 or more upon launch. The backers will receive their units in August though, while the official release is set for June, so it won't work if you're in a hurry. Source |...
