Flashback: USB-C, the one cable to rule them all

The battle for the smartphone wired connector is over and USB-C is the way forward. This multi-function port can do just about everything – it can charge devices, transfer data, handle audio and video output, it even lets you plug in accessories. How did we get here? Well, for years now the European Union has been trying to coax electronics manufacturers into settling on a common standard to avoid the mess (and waste) that proprietary connectors create. Early on microUSB was the connector of choice, but with the arrival of USB Type C, or USB-C for short, the industry shifted over to the...

We have been hearing about the Realme GT Neo 5 since last month, which Realme recently confirmed will be the first phone to support 240W wired charging. While Realme is yet to detail the GT Neo 5's specs sheet, what's believed to be the GT Neo 5 has been listed on Chinese certifying authority TENAA's website with full specs, leaving little to the imagination. We are looking at two versions - one with model code RMX3706 and another with RMX3708. The only difference between the two is the battery size. The former has a rated battery capacity of 2,425 mAh, while the latter has 2,225 mAh. That...

Samsung accidentally confirms Galaxy S23 series launch date

Last month, reliable tipster Ice universe said that Samsung would unveil the Galaxy S23 series on February 1, 2023. And earlier today, Samsung's Colombian branch corroborated the date as it set up a page on its website for the Galaxy Unpacked event for the unveiling of the S23 lineup. That page has now been removed, which suggests Samsung Colombia jumped the gun on the revelation of the Unpacked event's date. But we expect the Korean conglomerate to make an official announcement for the event soon. Note that Samsung didn't explicitly mention the Galaxy S23 on its website, but the...

The iPhone SE is dead

Apple refreshes its cheapest smartphone every two years, and since there's been an iPhone SE release in 2022, the next one was slated for 2024. Today a report from reputable analyst of all things Apple Ming-Chi Kuo makes us think the SE experiment is over. According to Kuo, Apple has instructed its supply chain partners that production and shipment plans for the 2024 iPhone SE have been canceled, and not merely delayed. Strangely enough, this decision has reverberations that reach Apple's oft-rumored in-house baseband chip, which keeps being "right around the corner" in rumors even though...

Samsung Q4 earnings guidance warns of plummeting profits

Samsung Electronics published its earnings guidance report for Q4 2022 and the preliminary numbers are not looking good. Samsung reported a consolidated operating profit estimate of KRW 4.3 trillion ($3.38 billion) for the October-December quarter. The figure represents a 69% dip compared to Q4 2021 values. The estimated Q4 profit would be Samsung’s lowest since Q3 2014. Quarterly revenue estimates are down by 9% to KRW 70 trillion ($55 billion). Decreased demand for smartphones and memory chips in particular are the main drivers for Samsung’s negative financial results. Analysts...

Disassembly video shows the Redmi K60 and K60 Pro are very similar on the inside

Xiaomi managed to sell 300,000 Redmi K60 phones in just 5 minutes – what did people buy? One way to answer that is to have a peak under the back panel. Here’s WekiHome’s detailed disassembly that reveals some interesting similarities between the Redmi K60 and the K60 Pro. As it turns out, the two phones are as similar as possible, likely as a way to simplify the assembly process. The Pro model uses a larger sensor (1/1.49” IMX890) than the vanilla model (1/2” OV64B40), so Xiaomi used a plastic bracket around K60’s camera to adjust its dimensions. Another big difference between...
