Samsung patents sensor pads to control devices with their edges

Everything around Samsung appears to be edges these days and we last told you about the company's Apps Edge initiative. Apparently another branch of the R&D department is working on a different aspect of edge operation, this time for conventional, flat screens. Making you wonder how no one had thought of it until now, Samsung has filed for a patent for transparent "sensor pads". Those will be placed alongside the edges of a smartphone and will be available as controls in various applications. The chief reasoning is, presumably, not to interfere with the displayed content on the screen. The most obvious use case, and possibly the inspiration behind the tech, is mobile gaming. For ages now console controllers have had buttons on top, where they can be operated with the index fingers. A quick dry run on a phone at the office suggests that it may be tricky at first, and keeping thumbs out of the way may be an issue, but we're not quick to judge. Camera controls are the other suggested use of the sensor pads and Samsung may be on to something here. Moving all (or most) of the functionality away from the display, which acts as a viewfinder, will allow for more precise framing, unhindered by all the toggles and shortcuts, while still allowing plenty of control. Additionally, it should in theory let you customize the placement of the shutter release wherever your fingers fall most naturally, meaning less awkward selfies. Well, in terms of handling, at least. As with all patents, this may never make it to production, or at least may take a while. At this point though, it does seem like an exciting path to...

Lenovo Vibe P1 hits TENAA with a 5-inch screen, quad-core CPU

All the way back in February a massive leak revealed a whole bunch of Lenovo smartphones, and timing made everyone think they were headed for an MWC launch. No such thing happened and the company's stand in Barcelona was dominated by the camera-centric Vibe Shot, accompanied by the affordable A7000. One by one, the other stars of that leak have started surfacing, and after the Vibe S1 from a couple of weeks ago, it's now time for the Vibe P1 to stop by TENAA. As usual the Chinese regulator's listing gives us detailed information, and, as usual, omits two key specs. Lenovo Vibe P1 at TENAA Starting off with what we do have, the Lenovo Vibe P1 sports a 5-inch LCD display with 720p resolution. It's powered by a quad-core 1.3GHz CPU, contrary to the previously established octa-core unit, and a quad-core 1.3GHz CPU these days means a Snapdragon 410. That's one of the specifics not explicitly stated in the TENAA entry, though. Other than that, the smartphone comes with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, an 8MP primary camera and a 5MP front shooter. The handset supports a number of LTE bands and boots Android 5.1. What is likely going to be the Vibe P1's headline feature is its battery capacity and that's the other area, where TENAA reveals nothing. When we first heard of it, the device was tipped to have a 4,000mAh cell inside, complete with fast charging capability. And while the certification data says nothing on the matter, the 143 x 72 x 9.35mm dimensions and 148g weight of the plastic 5-incher give plenty of credibility to that rumor. Source (in...

Gartner: Worldwide PC shipments drop by 9.5 percent in Q2 2015

The PC market has been slowly shrinking over the years, and this year is no different. According to Gartner, the PC shipments in the second quarter of 2015 dropped by 9.5 percent worldwide compared to the same quarter last year. Lenovo was the top company once again in the PC space but suffered a year-on year decline for the first time since 2013. It was followed by HP and Dell. Gartner believes there are three reasons for the drop, the first being the rise of US dollar compared to some of the local currencies worldwide, causing increased prices, the second being phasing out of Windows XP last year, which caused a lot of people to upgrade last year and not so much this year, and lastly manufacturers clearing out old stock this year to prepare for the upcoming Windows 10. Gartner believes, however, that the PC sales will be back up next year in...

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge get a $200 price cut in the US

If you've been refusing to believe that the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge Plus are coming soon, this latest offer from AT&T should give you some food for thought. The US carrier has taken $200 off the prices of the Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge phablets. Admittedly, we're talking about the 2-year contract prices but if you're after a commitment with AT&T anyway, snatching a Note Edge for $199.99 is a properly good deal. The Note 4 is even listed at half that, $99.99. Now,that's the price of the device only, and it comes with a monthly plan with 10GB of data, which will set you back $100, plus an additional $40 smartphone access charges, totaling $140 a month. So in essence, the deal saves you as much as a month and half worth of fees. Source 1 Source 2 |...

Google adds 'Send to device' button on the desktop Google Maps

Previously if you had to open the directions to a place on your Android phone after viewing it on your computer, you would likely have to open it again. This new addition makes life a little easier. You might see the 'Send to device' option appear when you click on a place in Google Maps desktop version. This should open the place on your Android phone with the direction to it so you don't have to manually search again while leaving the house. The option should appear if you have the latest version of Google Maps on your phone (9.11.0). If not it should roll out in some...

Samsung patents a mysterious Apps Edge trademark

Samsung has been determined to show us that new functionality can be found in the use of curved-edge displays. The pioneering Galaxy Note Edge introduced new ways of interacting with the smartphone, but as a first-gen product the special sibling to the Note 4 was not without its flaws. The Galaxy S6 edge is a toned-down attempt, where the curves mostly serve to enhance the feel in the hand, though a few nifty extra features do set it apart from the vanilla S6. It would appear that Samsung is not content with that and has set on to take the edge to the next level. A recent filing with the US patent authority sees Samsung applying for the Apps Edge trademark, though it is distinctly vague on the actual use of the term. Sifting through the text, we can find out that what stands behind the mysterious words is "software for organizing and allowing quick access to frequently used applications" - basically what the edge screen was fundamentally conceived to do. Registering a dedicated trademark, however, may be an indication of a trend towards a more diverse selection of apps to utilize the present hardware. Additionally, one could see Samsung headed for an expansion of the portfolio of devices that feature a curved edge screen, the alleged Galaxy S6 edge Plus being the next in line. Via 1 Via...

Motorola Moto G 2015 shows up in a set of leaked renders

The hugely successful original Motorola Moto G was released back in November 2013 and was a value-packed proposition that delivered most of the truly necessary features an Android phone must have without breaking the bank. The second-gen Moto G brought a few minor tweaks, but was no longer as lucrative a deal, as its hardware had gotten a bit outdated. Which brings us to this year's Moto G (2015), or Moto G (3rd gen), if that sounds better to you. It's not the first time we get to see the upcoming handset, in fact it once surfaced in a video, where a prototype ran the Antutu benchmark, while later a lone alleged press image showed the handset front and back. Well, we're now being treated to another set of renders from multiple angles in higher resolution, detailing the Moto G (2015) design. Motorola Moto G (2015) alleged press renders In terms of specs, from what we can gather by now, largely based on that Antutu video, the 5-inch 720p Moto G (2015) will be powered by the newer, 64-bit Snapdragon 410 chipset, as opposed to the S400 in the previous iterations. RAM will apparently remain at 1GB, and the limiting 8GB of storage won't see a change either. The primary camera gets a bump to 13MP though. The Moto G is typically released in the fall, and there's still plenty of time for any of this to change, so stay tuned. Source (in...

OnePlus 2 teaser video features fan who has actually seen it

OnePlus is revving up its teaser campaign for the device it's going to announce on July 27 in virtual reality. After having revealed some specs for the OnePlus 2 bit by bit over the past few weeks, we're now treated to a promo video. Starring in it is a "OnePlus superfan" and forum moderator, who has actually seen, touched, and played with the OnePlus 2. He tells us what he likes about the phone, while using the word "awesome" way too many times. Hopefully you weren't expecting to find out some hard details about the upcoming smartphone. This has to be the most bleep-filled teaser video ever to be created for a new handset. While no new information about the OnePlus 2 has been outed this time around, we already know that it will sport Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 SoC, aided by 4GB of RAM. It's going to have a fingerprint scanner, a 3,300 mAh battery, and support for more 4G LTE bands than its predecessor. It will cost less than...

5.5-inch Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 passes through TENAA

Back in January we thought we saw the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 passing through TENAA, China's equivalent to the FCC. However, that may not have been the case, since phones going through the agency's tests usually launch a few weeks after. And the Redmi Note 2 still isn't official. That said, a handset that very well may be it has now been certified by TENAA. It's got a 5.5-inch touchscreen, just like its predecessor, but is smaller than the Redmi Note by every measurement. This means Xiaomi was able to make its bezels smaller, which is also quite obvious from the images above. The new device will measure 152.05 x 76.2 x 8.05 mm. For comparison's sake, keep in mind that the original Redmi Note measured 154 x 78.7 x 9.45 mm. Another thing that TENAA has helpfully revealed about the Redmi Note 2 is that it will sport a 3,020 mAh battery. That's smaller than the original's, so hopefully battery life won't be affected. Two versions of the Redmi Note 2 have been tested by the Chinese agency, and you can see from the pictures above that they are identical in looks. Yet while one comes with the necessary bands for China Mobile, the other seems tailored for China Unicom as well as the international market. It looks like China Telecom, the country's third carrier, won't be getting in on the action for whatever reason. Past leaks talked about the Redmi Note 2 coming either with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 SoC or a MediaTek MT6795, 1080p screen resolution, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and perhaps even a metal build. Google Play web design gets an update

Google has rolled out the updated design of the website to everyone. The redesign is only focused on improved product pages more than anything else. If you click on any item on the website now, you will be greeted by a narrow view that looks almost like someone copy pasted the Google Play app UI on to the web page. The narrow column wastes quite a bit of space on the side. It's only when you widen your window that a 'similar apps' section pops on the side but even then you can't help but feel like a lot of space is being wasted. Google also moved the +1 button at the bottom, which was actually a convenient to tell others you approve of an app, but that might be a sign of greater things at Google+. Overall, not the greatest UI design, especially for people with widescreen monitors (so, like, most of...

Legendary Pictures has a new set of VR experiences for Google Cardboard

Say what you want about Google Cardboard, but the low-budget stereoscopic headset can be a lot of fun. Sadly, compatible and amusing content still seems to be scarce and hard to come across. Which is why we are happy to share every new bit of fun we find, like Legendary Picture's new app. It is available for both Android and iOS devices and should work fine as long as your smartphone has enough power to play back the content, which shouldn't be an issues for most. And since it is simply done in stereoscopic 3D, you are not even limited to using only Google Cardboard. A lot of third-party products exist for a variety of devices and screen sizes and a quick search online should get you quickly geared up for some VR fun. Even if you don't have a headset and curiosity hasn't really convinced you to splurge a few bucks, Legendary has also included a traditional 2D viewing mode. The content within the app itself naturally doubles up as a promotional material for the studio's work. There are three experiences to go through. First up is a chilling tour of Allerdale Hall - the creepy gothic mansion featured in the upcoming film Crimson Peak. Then, for a quick change of pace, you get to see what it is like to pilot a 250-foot robotic warrior, taken straight from the set of Pacific Rim. Last, but definitely not least, you can take an enchanting ride on a Gryphon across the skies over Azeroth - a mythical realm inside the Warcraft universe, which is also set to appear on the big screen - namely this June in the epic World of Warcraft movie. So, if you have a few minutes and a Google Cardboard lying around, we encourage you to give the app a quick...

Facebook News Feed changes to give you more control over what shows up

The News Feed is one of the most important parts of Facebook, so this is pretty big news. The social network has announced that it's giving its users more ways to tweak what shows up in the News Feed. This comes by way of a revamped News Feed Preferences menu, which launches on iOS today and will become available for Android and the Web "over the coming weeks". The new News Feed Preferences let you prioritize whose stuff you see first, easily unfollow people or reconnect with those you've previously unfollowed, and discover new pages. To make sure you don't miss posts from specific friends and pages, you can prioritize them. Then, every time you launch Facebook, you'll see the stuff they shared since you last visited the social network at the top of the News Feed, with a star attached (so you know why that's there). If you scroll down, you'll then get the rest of your News Feed normally. "Discover New Pages" is basically just a collection of recommended pages that Facebook thinks you should like, based on the types of pages you've liked in the past. You've always been able to unfollow people from their profile, but now you can choose to do that from the new Unfollow menu in News Feed Preferences too, if you so wish. Presumably this should be more useful for bulk operations. You can also see who you've unfollowed in the past, and choose to re-follow them. The new News Feed Preferences can be accessed in the iOS app by tapping on More in the bottom right corner, then going to...

Barnes & Noble is shutting down its international Windows Nook store

If you happen to be an avid reader and like the whole idea of an e-book device, then you probably own a Kindle. Yet, Amazon's signature device does have quite a few alternatives, most-notably the Barnes & Noble Nook, which a lot of users do find to be more-convenient than a Kindle. All seems to be good and well with the company's e-ink readers, but a new email sent out to international users paints a different story for the company's Windows client base. It informs user outside the US and UK that the Windows Nook app will stop functioning on August 7. Furthermore, payments form Microsoft accounts are no longer supported, so any purchase made through that channel may be eligible for a full refund. Here is the original memo: Dear Customer,We recently announced that Barnes & Noble and Microsoft have agreed to terminate their commercial partnership. As a result, payments through your Microsoft account no longer supported. In addition, the NOOK App for Windows will from August 7, 2015 are no longer available outside the United States. This means that your NOOK content can no longer open on a Windows platform. Our records indicate that you are outside the United States and that you are using your Microsoft account as a payment method in your NOOK App for Windows account. Therefore, you may be eligible for a refund from Microsoft for any purchases you have made with your Microsoft account. This has all the signs of a bitter retaliation from Barnes & Noble. As some of you surely remember, Microsoft initially had an investment in the Nook store, which Barnes & Noble bought out last December. Apparently, the two sides weren't getting along too well, judging by the abrupt termination of the partnership. Still, it could just be a radical step to streamline the company's business which has shrunk significantly and is in need of some...

ZTE brings its Spro 2 pico-projector to Verizon

The ZTE Spro 2 is an odd (but probably useful) pairing between a pico-projector and an LTE hotspot. Oh, and it runs Android. With full access to the Google Play Store. And it has a 5-inch touchscreen. You're probably intrigued by now. Well, if your interest has been piqued, you should know that starting today there's a version of the Spro 2 out which works with Verizon's network. Up until this point you were only able to get an AT&T-compatible model, which retails for $499. The bad news is that, for whatever reason, the iteration which supports Verizon's bands is $100 more expensive. ZTE will gladly sell you one, through its official website, for $599. That's hefty, yes, but then this is a pretty unique device, and it stands in a niche of its own. The Spro 2 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset, it's got 150Mbps LTE, 2GB of RAM, Bluetooth, as well as HDMI and USB ports. The projector part spits out a 120" 720p image at 200 lumens. There's a 6,300 mAh battery inside, keeping things running, which will last for 3 hours when projecting, and up to 10 hours when you use the Spro 2 solely as a Wi-Fi hotspot. Source |...

BlackBerry gets Android domains, confirms a phone is coming shortly

BlackBerry just can't seem to catch a break lately. The legendary Canadian company has been struggling to keep afloat in the competitive mobile industry and Android has been cited more than a few times as the savior the manufacturer desperately needs. We have heard the rumors time and time again and BlackBerry's own CEO John Chen has even stated that adoption the OS is a possibility, so long as it can be made secure enough by the company's standards. Things moved forward even further toward Android adoption after a mysterious Android-powered slider was showcased at MWC 2015. Now, it appears, BlackBerry might be closer to adopting Android than ever as the company recently registered two new domains, related to Google's mobile OS. The addresses are AndroidSecured.net and AndroidSecured.com, bother purchased by BlackBerry Limited on July 7. We can't really say what BlackBerry is up to or find any tangible connection between the domains and the BlackBerry Venice Android phone, allegedly scheduled for a November launch. Whatever it is, however, Android is surely somewhere in the mix. Source |...

OnePlus 2 will have 3,300 mAh battery, support for more bands

OnePlus doesn't want to get off the hype train when it comes to its next smartphone. A few members of the Chinese company's team took to Reddit today for an AMA session, during which a few new details about the OnePlus 2 have been revealed. First off, the picture you can see below got posted. That's a OnePlus One, obviously. Though underneath it is a OnePlus 2, apparently. So it's clear that the upcoming phone will be smaller than its predecessor. Despite this fact, the OnePlus 2 is confirmed to come with a 3,300 mAh battery, an almost 10% capacity increase over the One's 3,100 mAh cell. The new handset's camera has been a big priority for the team working on it. On the other hand, the OnePlus 2 will not feature a heart rate sensor. Nor will it have fingerprint recognition built into the touchscreen - instead, an actual separate physical sensor will be used (just like what we've seen in Apple's and Samsung's devices). To buy the new phone, you'll still need an invite, but the system will be greatly improved according to the OnePlus reps. Also, the company's "early supporters" will be prioritized. The startup is most proud of the upcoming device's design and build, though it still wouldn't say whether metal was used or not. However, it looks like there will be different StyleSwap back covers for the phone. There will be three versions of the OnePlus 2 (these may be called A2001, A2003, and A2005 according to past leaks). One will be destined for China only, and the other two will be international models. One of those will be aimed at North America, while the other will be tailored for Europe and Asia. One of the differences between these will be network band support. The North American model will work on GSM 850, 900, 1800, and 1900MHz, WCDMA bands 1/2/4/5/8, and FDD-LTE bands 1/2/4/5/7/8/12/17. The Europe/Asia iteration will support GSM 850, 900, 1800, and 1900MHz, WCDMA bands 1/2/5/8, and FDD-LTE bands 1/3/5/7/8/20. As for the much-hyped unveiling event itself, this will take place in virtual reality as we've already told you. New info has emerged about it too. OnePlus will release a special Android app through which you'll be able to see the announcement, both in VR (if you have a headset), as well as without VR. Then, after the event finishes, a recording will be uploaded to YouTube, enabling even people who don't have an Android device to watch it. Finally, some good news for those who think the OnePlus One is still adequate enough even today, especially as a $249 smartphone: last year's flagship will still be on sale, even after the OnePlus 2 becomes...

Android M Developer Preview receives first OTA update

The Android M Developer Preview was launched by Google at the end of May, after the official unveiling of the most important new features in the latest OS release. Back then, Google promised that the M Developer Preview would receive a couple of updates before the software becomes stable enough to be consumed by the general public. These updates were supposed to hit roughly at the end of June and at the end of July. It's a bit late by that time frame, but the first update to the Android M Developer Preview is now out. You can either grab one of the new system images from the developer preview website and manually install, or wait for your device to notify you about the new bits. Alleged Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo surfaces in Wi-Fi certification

The possibility of a Neo variant of the Galaxy S5 has been tossed around ever since the former flagship came out last year. Since then at least a few rumors have gone by, but the device never came to be. Recently, however, the possibility of a new S5 variant has been rekindled and a new Wi-Fi certification might finally give us a glimpse of what specs to expect from the rebooted flagship. The document in questing concerns a Samsung handset with a model number of SM-G903F, which could very-well be the Galaxy S5 Neo. A reboot of last-year's design could appeal to a lot of fans, craving a more-classical Samsung look and feel, but the timing seems rather odd. What we are referring to is another piece of news from late last month, which revealed that the said phone was already up for preorder in the Czech Republic for $490 and with a shipping date listed as July 3. The Wi-Fi certificate itself is dated - July 6, so something is definitely amiss. Still, we could simply assume that the Czech retailer twisted the delivery timeframe a little, in which case the only problem should be a few disappointed early clients. As far as we currently know, the Galaxy S5 Neo will be powered by an Exynos 7580 SoC with 64-bit octa-core CPU clocked at 1.6GHz, and a Mali-T720 GPU. In addition, the handset will feature a 5MP front camera, just like the S6. All other specs remain the same as that of the S5 - a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution, 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal memory, 16MP rear camera, and 2,800 mAh battery. The report also notes that the S5 Neo will come in both single-SIM and dual-SIM variants running Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box, and will feature LTE-A connectivity. Source (in Japanese) |...

The restructured Microsoft to release up to six phones per year

Microsoft is undergoing some major changes, starting with the writing off the Nokia acquisition and laying off 7,800 employees. The Nokia Devices and Services business was obviously a failure and quickly became a burden. The restructuring includes Microsoft's Executive Vice President of the Windows and Devices Group Terry Myerson to become the head of the entire Microsoft Devices division. This means Microsoft is uniting its Windows, phone (Lumia), tablet (Surface), console (Xbox), HoloLens, and Band business under a single Devices division. This should help Microsoft programming and engineering teams to work closer and better on future products. Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella announced all those changes yesterday, but he didn't shed some light on the company's plans on the Lumia series. Still, Bloomberg received a generous tip from an anonymous Microsoft source, with some spicy details on the Lumia plans. Apparently Microsoft will be taking a new approach with the Lumia smartphones, somewhat similar to Apple's release schedule. Microsoft will be dividing the phones in three different categories - flagship, business and value. Each year Microsoft will launch "one or two models" per category, which makes for up to six handsets per year. Those changes aren't immediate and will probably take effect next year. Microsoft has already released a plethora of phones this year and it is expected to unveil a Windows 10 flagship this fall. Dividing the phone business into those categories will help the manufacturer focus on certain features and deliver unique and satisfying experience. Source |...

Xiaomi Mi5 Plus swings by TENAA, poses for photos

It is no secret that Xiaomi is hard at work on two new devices - the Xiaomi Mi 5 and Mi5 Plus. The latter was the subject of many rumors and more than a few speculations about its specs sheet. Now, the headset has gone through TENAA and we can finally confirm its hardware once and for all. Sadly, earlier rumors of a 23MP rear camera should be disregarded. According to the certification authority, the successor to the Mi Note Pro will only feature a 13MP main camera with dual-done flash and a 4MP shooter on the front. Still, the rest of the specs sheet paints a picture of a really beastly device. It boasts a spacious 5.7-inch IPS display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and Gorilla Glass 4 protection. Under the hood, we find Qualcomm's newest top of the line SoC - the Snapdragon 820, which should deliver unmatched computing power. Just to make sure things run as smooth as possible, Xiaomi has also thrown in 4GB of fast LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. As far as connectivity goes, the Xiaomi Mi5 Plus reaps all the benefits from the Qualcomm chip, including fast Cat.9 LTE and GPS plus GLONASS. Also, Wi-Fi ac and Bluetooth 4.0. On the physical side, the phone measures 155.1 x 77.6 x 6.95 mm and weighs in at 160 grams. Rumors say that the battery capacity will be 3,500 mAh and quite naturally, the unit boots Android Lollipop with Xiaomi's own MIUI. Source (in Chinese) |...

Verizon's Sony Xperia Z4v will be released on August 13

Last month Sony and Verizon announced the Xperia Z4v, a slightly enhanced version of the Z3+ which will be exclusive to the carrier nicknamed Big Red. This arrangement follows in the footsteps of the Z3v from last year, so it's no surprise really. One of the important details that was missing from the unveiling of the Z4v was its release date. Thankfully though, Sony has now decided to give us that. As you can see, it will be August 13. The image above is basically a screengrab of Sony's official microsite for the Xperia Z4v, so we expect the date to be correct. Unfortunately we still have to wait in order to find out anything about how much you'll have to pay for the device. That said, we can't imagine it will be cheap given its high-end specs. The Z4v sports a 5.2-inch QHD touchscreen, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 chipset, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 20 MP rear camera with LED flash, a 5 MP selfie shooter, and a 3,000 mAh battery. It runs Android 5.0...

Microsoft lays off 7,800 people, writes off Nokia acquisition

Through the voice of Satya Nadella (pictured below), its CEO, Microsoft today unveiled some bad news for a significant portion of its employees. In an email actually addressed to Microsoft employees, Nadella announced that up to 7,800 jobs will be slashed globally, primarily in the company's phone business. That's the one it acquired from Nokia in 2013. But the bad news related to this deal and Microsoft's standing in the smartphone world doesn't stop there. The company has also unveiled that it "will take an impairment charge of approximately $7.6 billion related to assets associated with the acquisition of the Nokia Devices and Services business in addition to a restructuring charge of approximately $750 million to $850 million". That's basically the entire amount Microsoft paid for Nokia's phone business. The aforementioned write off obviously comes as Microsoft hasn't been able to reach any reasonable market share numbers in the smartphone space throughout the world with its own handsets. And, of course, Windows Phone itself isn't doing better either. That leads us to another point in Nadella's message. Apparently it's time for Microsoft to focus its phone efforts "while driving reinvention". There will be a move "from a strategy to grow a standalone phone business to a strategy to grow and create a vibrant Windows ecosystem that includes our first-party device family". So presumably Microsoft wants to churn out less own-brand devices and see more partners adopt its mobile OS. As for its own smartphones, those will address three customer segments: businesses, value phone buyers, and Windows fans (who will get "the flagship devices they'll love"). This doesn't leave a lot of room for mid-range offerings in Microsoft's portfolio in the...

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and S6 edge Plus hardware detailed

Samsung's future high end phablet lineup is drawing more attention by the day and a few extra details have now surfaced on the Galaxy Note 5. Along with that, we're also being treated to a few specs of the Galaxy S6 edge Plus, which appears to be the name Samsung has settled on for the edge-screened upmarket phablet. Starting with the Note 5, the source states that it will feature a 5.67-inch QHD Super AMOLED display, a bit of a departure from the 5.89 inches we were previously led to expect. The smaller diagonal means a 70.6mm display width, and that somewhat clashes with the narrow bezels and overall 77.3mm width in the latest leaked renders, so something may be off here. Befitting its top shelf nature, the Note 5 will be powered by the in-house Exynos 7422 SoC, a reworked version of the already familiar 7420 inside the Galaxy S6, but with built-in cellular modems this time. The Galaxy S6 edge Plus (we'll see how Samsung goes about the use of capital letters here) on the other hand will carry the signature dual-edge display curves on the same 5.7-inch diagonal. This one will come with a Snapdragon 808 SoC, which by the time of launch will likely be the manufacturer's third most powerful, behind the S820 and S810 models. We get a few more numbers for the S6 edge Plus, namely 32GB of storage, a 16MP primary camera with OIS and 2160p video recording (not that you would've guessed otherwise), as well as a 5MP front shooter. It has also been said to come with a 3,000mAh battery and Lollipop 5.1.1 upon launch. Both devices are tipped to have glass backs, Galaxy S6-style, so we'd have to wave goodbye to the user-replaceable battery, less of an issue on the Note 5 with its rumored 4,100mAh cell capacity. There's no word on the inclusion of a microSD slot, so there's still some hope on that front. The bottom line is the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will be aimed at the power user with its top-of-the-line chipset and large battery capacity, while the Galaxy S6 edge Plus will cater to the vain and deliver a large-screen experience in a more stylish package. We're looking forward to the next batch of leaked live images, to see what part of this checks...

New leak details the new Moto G and reveals a Moto X Sport

A couple of rather interesting, albeit pretty low-quality shots have surfaced online. They are said to come from Entel - Chile's largest carrier and seem to show two upcoming Motorola devices. One is the Moto G (2015) or 3rd gen. The legendary budget handset has come a long way since the original came out in 2013 and the latest iteration promises to pack even more Android goodness and productivity without breaking the bank. The headset was already spotted in a few live photos and a video back in June, so, we have a pretty good idea what to expect. This new leak confirms a lot of this initial information. The Moto G (3rd gen) bears a lot of visual resemblance to the current second generation and has also kept the 5.0-inch display size and most-probably the 720p resolution as well. As far as we currently know, the CPU is also upgraded to a quad-core unit, running at 1.4GHz, most-probably the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410. RAM should be set at 1GB and 8GB for onboard storage. Thankfully, there is a microSD card slot and judging from previous Moto G models, other storage variants as well as a dual-SIM variety should follow shortly. The camera setup is also bumped up quite a bit with a 13MP shooter on the back, dual-LED flash and a 5MP one on the front. The other phone featured in the leaked photos looks to be a rugged Moto X variant. The title leads us to believe that it is dubbed the Moto X Sport. The headset is equipped with a 5.2-inch screen, just like the current Moto X, but perhaps with some extra protection, which we can't really tell from the photo. The rest of the specs sheet includes a 16MP main camera and a 5MP selfie one, which is an upgrade over the current Moto X. We do also have some info on the chipset - mainly that it is a quad-core chip, running at 1.5 GHz, but a make and model is not mentioned. Last, but not least, the leak leads us to believe that both models will be unveiled in August, which is just a few weeks away, so, prepare for a new batch of Motorola goodies shortly. Source |...

Sprint to sell the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime from July 10

The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime made its debut in the US back in April at Cricket. Now though it looks like another carrier is getting ready to sell it. We're talking about Sprint, which is apparently going to offer the Galaxy Grand Prime to its customers starting on July 10, which is this Friday. This information has been leaked through the image you see below, which is purported to be a shot of an internal Sprint system detailing the upcoming device. The same document helpfully lists pricing for the Galaxy Grand Prime too. If you want to pay full price for it, you'll need to shell out $240. Otherwise, you will be able to use Sprint's Easy Pay scheme to get it with $0 down, followed by 24 monthly payments of $10.
