Nokia is giving away free Google Home Minis with the purchase of a Nokia 6 (2018) (a.k.a. 6.1), Nokia 7 plus, and Nokia 8 Scirocco in the UK and Ireland. To redeem the smart speaker, you need to buy one of the three phones and hit Nokia up with the IMEI between May 2 and June 14. Be sure to check out our review of the Nokia 7 plus You can also grab a phone for yourself and two family members and get a speaker for each as the offer is good for up to 3 Home Minis per household. Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge Oreo updates coming on May 18

New day, new info on the seemingly inevitable, yet never actually happening, Android 8.0 Oreo updates for the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. This time it's courtesy of the Samsung-run Turkish website that translates to "Are we up to date?" which we've referenced in the past, again in connection with the S7. Well, the quoted date is now May 18 for the S7 and S7 edge (up from April 13 last time). The Galaxy A3 (2017), A5 (2017), and A7 (2017) will follow next, on June 1 (previously May 25). Obviously, as with last time, those deadlines may or may not be met. Samsung...

LG Q7 receives FCC certification

The LG Q7 is methodically gathering the certifications needed before official launch. After it became clear a couple of days ago that it's been certified in Russia alongside the G7, the Q7 has now cleared the US FCC - or at least that's what we're making of the ZNFQ710TS model name that's popped up in the regulator's database. Details on the handset's specs have been scarce, and that's not going to change with this FCC filing. Occasionally, we've been lucky and the FCC ID location in the menus has revealed something like battery capacity, but not today. In any case, if the G6/Q6...

Unknown Xiaomi 6-incher visits TENAA - dual camera, but 720p display

Xiaomi's model lineup is looking more confusing by the day, particularly in the lower end, and a new device revealed on TENAA isn't going to help. The Chinese regulator has certified a smartphone that goes by the model designation M1803E6E and we have it pegged for the next Redmi, but who knows. It's got a Redmi-grade display resolution - 720p, but a Redmi Note diagonal - 5.99 inches (at this point why not call it 6 inches?). It's an LCD in an 18:9 aspect ratio, though that doesn't help with assigning a 'Note' moniker or not. The number that does point to a non-Note is in the battery...

New update to Verizon LG V30 makes it V30ThinQ, brings AI Cam

Verizon has started pushing out a new update to LG V30 units on its network. The update arrives as software version VS99620b, and brings along multiple changes, including ThinQ branding and AI cam. To begin with, post update, the start screen of the device will show LG V30ThinQ (instead of LG V30). This has been done to reflect "the new artificial intelligence integration." Another change comes in the form of AI Cam, which analyzes subjects in your frame and recommends one of 4 different filters. Recommendations are based on a total of 8 categories, including people, pets, food,...

The future of SMS - RCS messaging - to be called "Chat", Android is all in

In a statement to The Verge, Google has confirmed that it plans to put all of Allo's resources into smoothing the way for RCS or Rich Communication Services. This is a new standard that it set to replace SMS and will soon be compatible across most major carriers around the world. The Universal RCS Profile supports read receipts, typing notifications, larger image and video file sharing, and will work over Wi-Fi and LTE. The consumer name for this platform will simply be called "Chat". Rather than Google try to make an iMessage Clone, it has decided to embrace the existing RCS Profile and...

Nokia 7 plus review

Running out of single-digit numbers in its ever-growing portfolio, the reborn Nokia has started adding words - the high-end Nokia 8 Sirocco is worthy of an iconic moniker from the past, while simpler phones only get a 'plus', with a lowercase 'p' at that! But the Nokia 7 plus isn't looking half-bad - capital 'P' material at least.

LG G7's extra button on the side is apparently for Google Assistant

The LG G7 ThinQ will become official on May 2. A steady flow of leaks has recently emerged about it, and one detail was pretty worrying: the G7 was said to have an extra button on the side for some AI features. Naturally, many people assumed it would develop its own virtual assistant like Samsung did with Bixby, and then force it upon people. Today a new report claims that won't be the case, and instead the new button is meant solely to provide access to the Google Assistant. In an Android world that needs less duplication of features from OEMs, not more, this is definitely a welcome...

iPhone SE 2 to come in May with A10 Fusion chipset, missing 3.5mm jack

According to a new rumor originating at some unnamed case makers, Apple will launch the long-awaited iPhone SE 2 in May. The name isn't set in stone, however, keep that in mind. The new device will be powered by Apple's A10 Fusion chipset, which made its debut in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus back in 2016. That would be an upgrade from the original iPhone SE's A9 SoC. Purported iPhone SE 2 casings In making the new model more 'modern', Apple will remove the 3.5mm headphone jack, although the dimensions of the second-generation SE will be very close, if not identical, to those of its...

Verizon users notified of Oreo update for Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, don't get it

Not funny, Verizon. People have been waiting for the Oreo update for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge for a long time - these may be 2016 phones, but they are still flagships! So, when the Verizon Support page showed that the duo is finally getting the update, people's heart leapt for joy. Now imagine their disappointment when they found it's just a security update. The April security patch specifically. Sure, security is important, but this kind of fake-out isn't necessary. Promises, promises... The update should roll out in earnest tomorrow. Should. Meizu 15 Plus stops by Geekbench with 6GB of RAM and Android 7.0

The Meizu 15 and 15 Plus are relentless when it comes to benchmarks. First the Meizu 15 Plus revealed its Exynos 8895 chipset on AnTuTu, then the smaller Meizu 15 passed by Geekbench with a Snapdragon chip (either a 660 or 635) and now it's the 15 Plus' first run on Geekbench. Deal: Sony Xperia XZ Premium drops to $524.99, $275 less than its initial price

Sony took the wraps off its Xperia XZ2 Premium this week, and that means its predecessor is getting cheaper. The XZ Premium from last year can now be purchased for just $524.99. That's a whopping $275 less than the phone's initial price in the US, namely $799.99. The XZ Premium got its first price cut after only two months of availability, but even if you count from that $699.99 level, you're still getting $175 off with this deal. Previously, we've seen the XZ Premium going for $585 and $550, but never as low as $524.99. If you want a handset with a 4K screen and don't mind the huge...

Image courtesy of Consomac Apart from the model numbers and the fact that they're running iOS 11, the filings don't give away any additional information. However, given the early timing, it's...

Meizu 15 caught on Geekbench with a Snapdragon chip

Yesterday, the Meizu 15 Plus appeared on AnTuTu, revealing that it will use the Samsung Exynos 8895 chipset, and today we get closer to finding out what the smaller Meizu 15 will use. The latter has been spotted on Geekbench testing a Snapdragon chipset. The model isn't listed but judging by the score it could be a 660 or the 635. The tested model comes with 4GB of RAM but we expect there will be a model with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The Meizu 15 will have a 5.46-inch display with a conventional 16:9 1080p screen (possibly AMOLED), a 2,940mAh battery and run on Android...

For those who aren't aware, SoC stands for System on Chip. It's basically an Integrated Circuit that contains all components of an electronic system on a single piece of semiconductor, called chip. Samsung Galaxy A6 and A6+ CAD-based renders and videos leak

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy A6 and A6+ have been leaked today in renders based on CAD schematics. Each model gets a render video as well. These two models should launch soon, as the successors to the Galaxy A5 (2017), further cementing the Korean company's new naming scheme for mid-rangers which uses even numbers this year, as seen in the Galaxy A8 (2018) and A8+ (2018). Perhaps bafflingly, the source of these leaks claims that the A6 and A6+ might be sold under the Galaxy J8 and J8+ monikers in certain markets. If that pans out, Samsung would only add to the growing branding confusion in...

On that occasion, the P20 Pro will be announced for the subcontinent, and it will apparently be joined by the P20 lite, but not the P20. With its three rear cameras, the P20 Pro really took the mobile world by storm this year, delivering excellent performance even in low-light scenarios. While it is impressive, don't expect this smartphone to be anything but cheap, as it retails for €899 elsewhere. That currently translates into INR...

Amazon launches 'Internet', a low-resource web browser for Android

Amazon has announced a new web browser for Android called Internet. Internet is meant to be a basic, low resource browser for budget Android smartphones. Fittingly, it is only available right now in India where budget smartphones are hugely popular. Internet is fairly basic, in which it really has only a handful of features. The homepage shows you your frequently visited websites and some trending news stories, much like Chrome. You can open multiple tabs and also use private browsing to not save your browsing history. And that's pretty much it, really. The whole browser is just 2MB in...

Does the Moto Z3 Play have a side-mounted fingerprint scanner?

The Moto Z3 Play is due for announcement soon and we've already got a well-rounded idea of what to expect from it. That's in large part to an appearance at the FCC which gave us an idea of the specs, and some case renders that gave us an image to go along with those specs. Today we get an even better-looking image from Poetic Cases, which already offer their Karbon Shield case for the Moto Z3 Play. The images of the case reveal the phone's front, occupied solely by the 18:9 display, and the back, housing the dual-camera module. Case render, source - Poetic Cases What's...

Honor 10 will have a 3.5mm audio jack like the P20 Lite and Honor View 10

The Honor 10 is no stranger to the rumor mill, but there still are new details coming to light every day. The phone will use the same 5.84" LTPS display panel as the Huawei P20 Lite, including the notch. The selfie cam in that notch should be the 24 MP module from the P20 and P20 Pro (the Lite model comes with 16 MP). The mix of features continues with a 3.5mm audio jack, unlike the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro. Unfortunately, the Honor 10 will miss out on expandable memory - it will not have a microSD slot like the P20 Lite and Honor View 10 do. It will use the Kirin 970 chipset, however,...
