2023 Winners and losers: Honor

The past twelve months have been a massive success for Honor, especially in China. The company quickly filled the gap that was left by its former parent Huawei, and is currently number 1 in two major categories at home – most smartphones sold and most foldables sold. Domestic success is generally a healthy indication that the company is ready to expand overseas, and the past twelve months have been a testament to Honor's dedication to becoming once again a leading player in international markets. The Honor handsets arrived in India, another big achievement, under the management of...

My top 4 phones of 2023 - Prasad

2023 was a bit of a surprise. If you had asked me at the beginning of the year for this list, I wouldn't have included most of them, even if I knew they were coming. One, in particular, caught me completely by surprise and every time I mention it to people I have to emphasize just how serious I am about liking this device, lest they think I'm joking. The four devices listed below were the ones that naturally came to mind while writing this down. I could have included one more for the sake of a more pleasing top 5 list but everything else I used this year had at least one annoying quirk...

The best TWS earbuds of 2023

2023 offered plenty of new TWS earbuds options at varying prices. It wasn’t easy to single out the very best earbuds that passed through our office but we believe the following options impressed us enough during our reviews to deserve a spot on the list. We only included models that were launched in 2023 and which we reviewed so you'll notice that buds from Samsung, Apple and some other big names are absent. We'd also like to hear which TWS buds impressed you in the past year, so feel free to share your opinion in the comments section. Sony WF-1000XM5 Apart from their absurdly long...

Honor X50 Pro gets official with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, 108 MP main camera

Today in China, Honor made the X50 Pro official. The phone comes with a 6.78-inch 1,200x2,652 120 Hz OLED screen, with 1,920 Hz PWM dimming and 10-bit color support and an embedded fingerprint sensor. It isn't, however, an LTPO panel, so it will only switch between 60 Hz and 120 Hz, no other steps. At the helm sits Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, which is getting a bit long in the tooth now that the 8 Gen 3 is already out, isn't it? Anyway, on the rear we get a 108 MP primary camera with f/1.75 aperture and a 1/1.67" type sensor. There's also a decorative 2 MP sensor on the other...

My top 4 phones of 2023 - Ro

Even the premium segment wasn't particularly impressive to me, so that's why I picked only four phones for my top list. One brand that's missing from my list is Samsung. Even though I'm not a huge Samsung fan, I've always liked the S Ultra series, but the Galaxy S23 Ultra just feels like more of the same to me. The same goes for the Galaxy Z Fold5 - it's good, but unexciting. Xiaomi 13 Ultra Let's start with my daily driver - the Xiaomi 13...

The Samsung Galaxy A25 is the clear favorite – of those who are in the market for an entry-level phone, this one will usually make the shortlist. Quite a few people think that it is overpriced, so a price cut will certainly raise the A25’s fortunes. This is perhaps less a win for the A25 and more of a loss for the Galaxy A15 5G. Redmi is introducing the Note 13 family to the Indian market on January 4, that much we've known for more than a week now. But what wasn't officially confirmed was which members of the very expansive family we should expect to land in India. Today, the brand's Indian arm has thankfully revealed one of them: it's the Redmi Note 13 Pro, perhaps unsurprisingly. Redmi has outright named it in its newest teaser posts over on X, and it's even got a special website teasing the launch. Over there we get confirmation that the Indian Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G, just like the Chinese model, will be...

The Oppo A59 appeared online with a full specs sheet. According to X user yabhishekhd, the phone will have a lot of common features with the Oppo A58 devices, like the cameras or the battery capacity, but the big improvement will be the Dimensity 6020 chipset that supports 5G connectivity. nubia Red Magic 9 Pro survives bend test from both sides

A couple of days ago nubia's Red Magic 9 Pro was officially launched outside of China, where it was initially introduced last month. We've already put the gaming beast through the paces of our usual in-depth review, so go take a look at that if you haven't already. Also as usual, Zack from the YouTube channel JerryRigEverything has taken out the tools and subjected the Red Magic 9 Pro to his customary 'durability test' to see how it can withstand scratches, burns, and bends. Spoiler alert: very well, as it turns out. The scratch test is pretty much the same for all devices nowadays,...

Samsung Galaxy A55 runs Geekbench with Exynos 1480 SoC, Xclipse 530 GPU confirmed

Last week we saw a Geekbench run from the Galaxy A55's SoC, but it wasn't in the Galaxy A55 - it was using some kind of test platform. Today, that changes, as a prototype of the A55 itself has also made it onto Geekbench, and this confirms the interesting GPU choice Samsung's made. The A55's chipset is widely believed to be marketed as Exynos 1480, following, of course, in the footsteps of the 1380 seen in the A54 and the 1280 in the A53. Unlike those, however, the new one won't use a Mali GPU, instead opting for an AMD RDNA2-based Xclipse 530 GPU, which has been confirmed by today's...
