Verizon enables Voice over LTE on the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

Verizon has announced that it will be enabling Voice over LTE or VoLTE feature on the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Verizon launched its VoLTE network earlier this month and so far the only phones that could use it were the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the LG G2. VoLTE enables users to make a voice call over the LTE network instead of having to fallback on the 3G network for calls and 4G for data. The feature has to be enabled through the settings on the new...

Motorola Moto 360 to get a gold version soon

The Motorola Moto 360 is the most sought after smartwatch currently on the market and chances it will remain like this at least until the IFA-announced devices hit the shelves. However the US company is hoping its first smart wearable will retain its popularity even after that and is ready to spice it up a bit to achieve it. Motorola posted the following picture on its official website, showing the Moto 360 in three different colors - black, silver and gold. The smartwatch is currently only offered in silver and black, so it could either be a mistake by someone on the Motorola design team, or simply a case of someone jumping the gun on an upcoming announcement. The series of events that came after the image was published makes us strongly believe that it's a case of the latter, though. After the guys from Android Police noticed the promo image, they immediately contacted Motorola for comment. The immediate response? The image was replaced with the one you see on the left below. Eventually that one was also replaced with the one on the right, which makes it look as if the gold watch was never there. Quite suspicious isn't it? The response that the Motorola representative delivered added even more fuel to the fire: Although we can't comment on gold specifically, we're always exploring new materials and we intend to provide Moto 360 in a selection of styles in the future. For those not fluent in PR this roughly translates to: "Oopsie, we really shouldn't have done that. But now that you saw it, please pretend it never happened until we actually announce it". The choice of worlds is particularly interesting - "new materials" rather than "new colors" suggests that we are looking at a gold-made Moto 360. It could either be gold-coated or made out of solid gold, but if it's the latter the price might go sky-high. Here's hoping we don't have to wait too long until the image resurfaces, along with an official press release from Motorola. Source |...

Oppo R5 leaks with 4G LTE connectivity

Oppo is getting ready to launch the N3 phablet with rotating camera module on top next month, but it's not the only device the company is working on. A certificate for the Oppo R5 has just appeared on the Indonesian Postel website, hinting at an imminent release. Postel is the telecommunications regulator in Indonesia, similar to the FCC in the United States and TENAA in China. Given that Oppo already secured its blessing for launching its R5 in the country, we suspect the company will go on and formally introduce the smartphone very shortly. Unfortunately, the listing didn't confirm anything in terms of specs, except for the LTE radio and the R8106 model designation. However, given that at 6.3mm its Oppo R3 predecessor was the slimmest 4G smartphone back in the day, we expect the R5 to aim at retaking that title. Source |...

Apple details out-of-warranty repair costs for the iPhone 6 family

Apple quietly detailed out-of-warranty repair costs for the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. The charges are separated into three categories - screen damage, battery and power, and other repairs. Replacing the display of an iPhone 6 will set you back $109, while the same service for iPhone 6 costs $129. Curiously, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 5 screen replacements cost as much as those of the 5.5" model. A $6.95 shipping fee and local taxes will also be applied. Replacing the battery unit of all iPhone models costs $79 plus shipping and tax. It's worth noting on this instance that Apple's standard one-year warranty covers the replacement of a defective battery, so you are not likely to need this particular service with your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus. The other repairs section is where things get expensive - the section includes all procedures not related to simply replacing a screen or battery. Repair costs for the iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6 are $329 and $299 respectively. Regarding other repairs, it is worth noting that AppleCare+ covers two instances of accidental damage for $79 each. If you are accident prone, perhaps it is worth looking into purchasing the plan. All in all, it is convenient to know how much it costs to cure common issues your iPhone 6 might experience. The screen replacement cost is particularly important, as shattered displays are typically not covered by a standard smartphone warranty. Source |...

Jolla's smartphone will launch in India on September 23

Jolla will officially begin selling its Sailfish OS smartphone in India in four days, on September 23. The Finnish company delivered the news on its official Facebook page. As initially announced, Jolla's first handset will be offered on the vast market through a partnership with the online retailer Snapdeal. The latter will be the exclusive retailer for the Jolla smartphone in India. Considering the recently announced Android One family of smartphones, as well as the second generation Moto G, we reckon that pricing will be key factor for any success Jolla can possibly achieve in India. Here's hoping that the aging yet characterful device won't be stuck between the increasingly more capable entry-level Android devices and the high-end smartphone establishment. Source...

Samsung sold one million Galaxy S5 units in Germany

Samsung announced that it sold one million Galaxy S5 units in Germany. Coincidentally (or not?), the Korean giant delivered the news about its achievement the same day Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus became officially available (Germany is one of the markets where Cupertino's devices launched today). The impressive number of units related to devices actually sold to customers, not just shipped to the company's retail partners. The millionth Galaxy S5 buyer got treated to a €500 voucher from Samsung to mark the special occasion. Samsung shipped 10 million Galaxy S5 units worldwide in just 25 days after launching the device. The manufacturer typically doesn't comment on device sales figures outside of its home market. Source (in German) |...

New Samsung smartwatch to have fingerprint scanner

This year, Samsung's definitely been active in the nascent smartwatch space. It unveiled the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo (both pictured below), Gear Live, and Gear S so far. But next year the company may be taking its smartwatch efforts to the next level. According to a report out of Samsung's home country of South Korea, at Mobile World Congress 2015 (in early March) we could see a new wearable that will come with a built-in fingerprint scanner. And in what would be a first for a Samsung device, it may not require a swipe to register your fingerprint. Aside from featuring that sensor and not relying on a smartphone for secure authentication purposes, this yet-unnamed smartwatch is also to sport some simple payments functionality. This will be developed by Samsung in partnership with PayPal. The two companies have already teamed up this year to enable making payments with the Galaxy S5's fingerprint sensor, so the new smartwatch venture would be a natural extension of that relationship. The whole thing has been reportedly confirmed by "a high-ranking official at Samsung Electronics". Synaptics is also involved, thanks to its biometric know-how. The system will send promotional offers to your smartwatch from nearby stores (based on location), so you can pick what you want to buy even before entering a shop. It will be available in over 50 countries worldwide. Obviously the point of all this is for Samsung to be able to respond to the Apple Watch, which will become available early next year too. Samsung is clearly hoping that the built-in fingerprint scanner will give its next smartwatch the edge compared to Apple's first offering in the space. And the payment capability is meant to take on Apple Pay, which for starters will only be available in the US. Source |...

Samsung Galaxy A3 (SM-A300) revealed in User Agent profile

It seems that there are two Galaxy Alpha siblings in the works - the Galaxy A5 and now the Galaxy A3 (aka SM-A300). This one packs a 64-bit processor but curiously is close to low-end in most of its specs. A GFX Bench info page reveals a 4.8" screen with qHD resolution (540 x 960 pixels) and two cameras - 8MP on the back, 5MP on the front, both capable of 1080p video. The handset runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat and has 5GB of user-available storage, presumably 8GB total. The Galaxy A3 is powered by a Snapdragon 410 chipset with four Cortex-A53 CPU cores that ran at 1.2GHz for the benchmark but the User Agent Profile on Samsung's website points to a clock speed of 1.4GHz. The chipset is paired with an Adreno 306 GPU and 1GB of RAM. We haven't seen images of the device just yet to tell if this Alpha sub-series of Galaxy phones will share in the most important trait - thin, metal bodies. Info from TENAA puts the Galaxy A5 at 6.7mm thick and 126g and its specs are hardly flagship material either. Source 1 • Source 2 | Via (in...

60,000 Xiaomi Redmi 1S units hit Inida on September 23

Another Tuesday, another Xiaomi flash sale occurs. On September 23, the Chinese phonemaker is set to launch 60,000 Redmi 1S smartphones in India. Presumably, they'll sell in under 10 seconds. Unlike its previous flash sale, which offered 40,000 Redmi 1S phones to eager customers in India, this time the company has bumped the number. Now, 20,000 additional phones are available for purchase. In order to have a fighting chance to get your hands on one, you have to register until September 23 and are allowed to do so only once. Xiaomi advises you to be logged in 2-3 hours before the sale begins in order to have better odds. The smartphone is offered for just INR 5,999, which is around $98 at the current exchange rates and is even a bit cheaper than what the same handset goes for in...

Goldgenie offers 24ct gold-plated iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Choice is always good for consumers even if those consumers are looking to spend thousands of pounds on a gold-plated iPhone. We've seen Amosu's offerings now it's time to look at what Goldgenie has to offer to people with an aversion to non-noble metals. You can get either an Apple iPhone 6 or an iPhone 6 Plus in one of three versions. First up is the Luxury Gold Elite option, which coats the iPhone with 24K Gold, Rose Gold or Platinum. The iPhone itself can be White or Black, the front is unmodified and visible. The second option adds Swarovski crystals that completely coat the Apple logo. Then there's the Limited Edition Gulf Elite where you can get the Coat of Arms of your country: Kuwait, Iraq, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE. These come in the same 24K Gold, Rose Gold or Platinum options but are limited to 99 of each finish. Whichever edition you go for you get a choice of 16GB, 64GB or 128GB storage. More Samsung Galaxy A5 (SM-A500) photos appear

The second entry of the Alpha series has leaked yet again, this time with photos in the wild. The Samsung SM-A500 (or A5000) will likely be unveiled as the Galaxy A5 and will be thin and light like the Galaxy Alpha but with mid-range specs. The phone will have a metal frame, a 5" Super AMOLED screen of 720p resolution, a Snapdragon 400 chipset and a 13MP camera. Built-in storage is set at 16GB and there's a microSD card slot unlike the Galaxy Alpha. Samsung Galaxy A5 photos in the wild There's info suggesting that the back of the device will be made of metal too, unlike the plastic back of the Alpha but that's difficult to confirm from rumors. Apple starts retail sales of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Pre-orders for the new Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus started a week ago but some people prefer to buy their gadgets in person. The lines are long though, as usual, and many people in line have been queueing for a couple of days now. Apple is initially launching its new smartphones in the following countries: the US, the UK, Germany, France, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. China, India, Russia and other countries will be getting them later on. Such an event doesn't go without drama, of course. Samsung to launch Tizen smartphone in India by November

The oft-troubled Tizen platform from Samsung - seemingly in perpetual limbo between 'coming soon' and 'probably not' - has received yet another ray of hope in light of the recently cancelled Samsung Z project. Reports out of India indicate that Samsung is planning to release at least one non-flagship Tizen smartphone later this year on or around India's Diwali festivities in November. Either the SM-Z130E or SM-Z130H are expected to contend in India's entry-level markets, with the distinct possibility of both devices getting unveiled. Not many details are known about either handset, though Samsung has previously stated that their in-house Tizen OS could run on as little as 256MB of RAM - markedly a device targeted at price-conscious consumers. Samsung hopes to boost Tizen into contention through its Club Samsung 2.0 service, which will offer localized music, videos and TV shows. Tarun Malik, director of Samsung's Media Solutions Center for Southwest Asia - the team charged with promoting Tizen in India - expects that Samsung's alternate OS offering will be able to contend with already-established media streaming services such as Airtel Wynk and Vodafone Music Store. "We started late, but we are very focused. We are not shooting in the wild. This is a game that has to be led by the device manufacturer and not the pipe (telecom operators)," Malik told India's Economic Times. Expect more info to surface on Samsung's Tizen offerings in the coming months, and whether we'll finally see one of the devices up for sale. Source | Via |...

Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus benchmark results are out

Now that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are about to hit the stores, the two phones have undergone the Geekbench test suite. The popular benchmark stresses the phone's CPU and RAM by going through numerous tests to determine the final single-core and multi-core scores. The results are quite interesting. The iPhone 6 trumps the iPhone 6 Plus in both single-core and multi-core performance. The iPhone 6 scores are 1627 and 2920 points versus iPhone 6 Plus' 1481 and 2662 points for the single-core and multi-core results, respectively. Digging a bit deeper we can get a better idea of why this is so, considering both are rocking the same Apple A8 chipset with a dual-core CPU. The processor in the iPhone 6 is clocked at 1.39GHz, while the one in its bigger brother runs at 70MHz lower speed, at 1.32GHz. There's a difference in the RAM capacity as well, however minuscule it might be. The reported RAM memory for the iPhone 6 is 987MB, while the iPhone 6 Plus makes do with 975MB. These minor differences in the CPU and RAM specifications aren't enough to justify the large gap in the test scores. One possible explanation is that the Geekbench suite itself isn't yet optimized for the Apple A8 architecture and has slight variations in its results. Just yesterday another popular benchmark suite Benchmark pulled off any test results done on the Apple A8 chip until it sorts known bugs with its software. Source • Source (2) |...

Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus take on the drop test

The new iPhone 6 family brings bigger screens but that only means there's more screen to crack if you drop the precious gadget. So how do the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handle being dropped? That's what drop test videos are for. The best-case scenario is if the phone falls screen up but as buttered toast experiments show that's rarely the case. Still, you'll only be looking at some cosmetic damage on the aluminum unibody (if you don't use a case). Falling on one of the four corners is more dangerous - the bigger iPhone 6 Plus actually had its screen cracked in that test. The smaller iPhone 6 survived but this could just be luck. We won't give the ending away but even the new "Ion-strengthened glass" on the new iPhones can't beat concrete. We have to wonder what would have happened if the rumors proved true and Apple used sapphire glass. Thanks, David, for sending us a...

Samsung Galaxy Alpha is now unofficially available in the US

Samsung Galaxy Alpha made its way to the United States, albeit unofficially. The online retailer Expansys has listed the sleek-looking, metal-clad smartphone as available to ship across the Atlantic. The compact flagship is priced at $699.99 for a factory-unlocked device with 32GB of built-in memory and Exynos chipset. Black, gold, and blue colored versions of the handset on the other hand, are available for pre-order. US carrier compatibility of the device is not detailed. T-Mobile and AT&T Wireless however, are all but certain to play nice with the smartphone. There is no word on the official arrival of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha to the United States just yet - the Korean giant is currently focused on launching the Galaxy Note 4 in the country. Therefore, picking up an unofficial import might be the safest bet for eager users for some time to come. You can find out all about the SM-G850 in our detailed review. Source |...

iPhone 6 gets two certifications in China, still needs another

A couple of days ago a report surfaced saying that the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus don't yet have a release time frame set for the Chinese market. Apparently not even China Mobile, the world's biggest carrier by subscriber count, knows when the two models will arrive in its country. It all has to do with the two iPhones not having been certified for sale in China by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the rumor went. And this has pretty much been confirmed today through an article published by China's state news agency. So far four iPhone 6 models have passed what's known as China Compulsory Certification (3C), and have also won approval from the State Radio Regulation of China. The 3C system is similar to the European CE, in that it's a mandatory certification that approves various products to be sold in the Chinese mainland. All of this may sound like good news for Apple, but its two new iPhones still need to obtain "a key network access license" before they can legally be sold in China. And once again, we have no estimation on when they might receive that. So despite some steps having already been made towards releasing the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in China, it's still very much a mystery when they should be expected in stores over there. iOS 8 is already running on more than 16% of devices

iOS 8 started rolling out to the masses yesterday at 10 am PT. So it's only around 24 hours old at this point. However, it's already present on more than 16% of Apple mobile devices, according to data from analytics firm Mixpanel which tracks mobile app usage. That figure was reached as of 7 am PT today, and in the hours that have passed since then it's surely gone up some more. At the moment of the launch yesterday, Mixpanel was showing an adoption rate for iOS 8 of 0.53%, made up of people using the pre-release versions of the software. As impressive as this 16% adoption rate may sound, iOS 8 is actually slower-spreading than its predecessor. iOS 7 reached 15% of devices before the day of its release ended. And one day after that, it was to be found on a whopping 38% of Apple-made mobile wares. The slower adoption of iOS 8 makes some sense when you consider how much more publicity iOS 7 got last year thanks to its completely revamped user interface. This year's release packs a lot of new things too, but most of those are new features and under the hood enhancements, as the design hasn't been altered this time around. To get to know iOS 8 better, make sure you read our in-depth preview. Of all the versions of Apple's mobile operating system, iOS 7 is still the most widely distributed, appearing on 80% of devices. Older iterations see a collective adoption rate of only 3% at the moment. Source |...

OnePlus One finally gets a pre-order system, live in October

The past few months have been a pretty mixed bag for OnePlus, the Chinese startup that's behind the One - which it calls a "flagship killer". A series of mishaps, as well as its famous invite system, have led many to hold on purchasing the One. But if you have, you may reconsider starting next month. See, it looks like the company finally heard the cries of would-be customers across the world, and it's set to introduce a new pre-order system "in late October". Here's how the new system will work. OnePlus will hold limited time sales, during which anyone will be able to place an order for the OnePlus One. So far it sounds like Xiaomi's 'flash sale' model. The difference is that OnePlus won't limit the amount of orders that can happen during each window. Obviously though, the number of readily available Ones will be limited, so those will immediately go out to people who ordered (presumably on a first come, first served basis). When the stock runs out, the remaining orders will be automagically transformed into pre-orders. If you'll be in this situation, the company promises it will give you an approximation of when it expects to ship your order before you go through with the payment authorization (so you can easily back down if it feels like too much of a wait). Also, if you decided to go with the pre-order but change your mind before your handset has shipped, you'll be able to cancel easily. Interestingly though, the invites will stick around. And they'll let you skip the wait. If you receive an invite while you're waiting for a pre-order to ship, you can apply it to skip the pre-order queue and have your One sent to you immediately. Even more information will be made public about a week before the new system goes...

Galaxy S5 and Note 4 may get Android L by early December

Android L is undoubtedly going to be released by Google before the end of this year, and as more time passes you might be inclined to ask yourself when or if your particular device will get updated. With Samsung's Galaxy S5 and Note 4, it's clearly not a matter of 'if', as they will both surely receive the new OS version. But when? Here comes the first rumor on the matter. Apparently you should expect rollouts to commence either in late November or in early December. That would be pretty fast for Samsung, even if Google pushes out the new bits tomorrow. However, there's no release date for Android L to speak of right now. But it looks like Samsung may be working towards having updates ready sooner than usual. This may of course have something to do with the recent moves by some of Samsung's competitors. Last year, HTC and Motorola were both reasonably fast with updates to Android 4.4 KitKat (Motorola far more than HTC). And this time around Moto's already said that it will have updates ready within 90 days after it gets the finalized source code from Google. As more and more companies finally realize how important timely software updates are for smartphone owners, Samsung probably has no choice but to work faster too. That said, it's pretty clear that the Galaxy S5 and Note 4 will be the first Samsung devices to see Android L. When older handsets such as last year's Galaxy S4 and Note 3 may get updated is a different matter entirely, and we wouldn't be surprised if that only happens next...

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will hit store shelves on October 14 at AT&T and October 17 anywhere else in the US. T-Mobile is going to offer the phone for $31.24/month with a 2-year contract. Interestingly, AT&T has revealed its no contract pricing of the Galaxy Note 4. The SIM-free version will cost you $825.99. You can also have it for $299.99 with a 2-year deal, as well. In Europe, the phone will launch on October 10 with a rumored price tag of €699 for a SIM-free...

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 UK pre-orders start tomorrow

Samsung has officially announced Galaxy Note 4 availability details for the UK market. The phablet's pre-orders will start tomorrow, September 19 from Samsung's retail stores in the country. Retailers Three, Carphone Warehouse, Clove and other outlets will get to offer the Galaxy Note 4's for pre-order a week later on September 26. After the recent developments it's extremely unlikely that Phones4U is going to jump on the bandwagon. The company plans to stock store shelves with Galaxy Note 4 units on October 10, three weeks from now. In South Korea, however, this could happen a bit earlier. Yesterday, we reported that SK Telecom plans to launch the phone for a pre-order some time today and make it available for purchase on September 26. Official pricing information for the phone is still under wraps. Earlier this month, the first pre-orders launched at €699. In case you're wondering, there's also a lot of unknowns regarding Galaxy Note Edge's pricing and availability. All we know is that it's going to land in China on September...

The phone measures 125 x 63.2 х 9.3mm and weighs 120 grams with a 1,400mAh battery underneath the back cover. It will be available in Russia in black, white, red and blue for $130 (RUB 4,990). It is joined by the GSmart Arty A3 and its larger 5" 854 x 480 pixel display. The phone runs Android 4.4 KitKat on a MediaTek MT6582 chipset featuring a quad-core 1.3GHz Cortex-A7 CPU and 1GB of RAM. There's a microSD card slot to complement the 4GB of internal storage. The Arty A3 measures 145 x 73.2 x 9.4mm and weighs 165 grams. The Arty A3 features an updated 8MP camera with LED flash and 1080p video recording at the back and a 2MP snapper at the front. Strangely, it runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, but we're sure it'll get updated to KitKat, considering the rest of the line-up runs the latest version of the OS. Anyway, at the back is the same 13MP camera of the Mika 2, but the battery is bumped at 3,000mAh. Internal storage is a generous 32GB, but that's understandable since no microSD card slot is available. The phone weighs 165 grams and is 8.5mm...

BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9983 gets official

After leaking back in August, the new BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9983 has been officially announced today. It's the successor to the P'9982 from last year, which itself succeeded the original P'9981 from 2011. The new smartphone comes with a 3.1-inch 720x720 touchscreen, an 8 MP rear camera, and a 2 MP front-facing camera. It's got 2GB of RAM and 64GB of storage that can be expanded via a microSD card slot. 4G LTE support is in, as are dual-band Wi-Fi (802.11n), an FM radio, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, and NFC. The P'9983 is powered by a pretty old Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus chipset, which comes with a 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU and an Adreno 225 GPU. Keeping things juiced up is a 2,100 mAh battery. The phone runs BlackBerry OS 10.3. Its dimensions are 119 x 67.1 x 10.6 mm, and it weighs 140g. The main talking point about this device will undoubtedly be its design and premium finish. It comes with sapphire glass for the camera lens, forged stainless steel for the Porsche Design logo and chassis, and "a special glass-weave technology for the back door". In the box you'll find a premium stereo headset, an international charging kit, a polishing cloth, and a USB cable. Exclusive aftermarket accessories will also be offered, including back covers made from fine Italian leather. These will be available in a myriad of different colors. The BlackBerry P'9983 will become available by early October at Porsche Design stores, as well as select carriers and retailers across the world. Pricing hasn't been announced, but don't expect this handset to be cheap. At...

Note Edge won't be cheap, Note 4 lands in China on the 26th

The recently announced Samsung Galaxy Note Edge is already up for pre-order in Germany, though it's been priced at a rather insane €1,000. It turns out, however, that it might actually be that expensive. Over in China, an employee at the country's biggest carrier used the Weibo microblogging network to post about the Note Edge's price. This will apparently be over CNY 7,000. At the current exchange rates, that equates to $1,139 or €880. And since €1,000 is technically more than €880, you probably shouldn't expect to see the Note Edge in the 'bargains' category at any retailer. Interestingly, the aforementioned China Mobile employee later took down his post about the Note Edge, so let's count this whole thing as an unconfirmed rumor for now. On the other hand, the same individual has since written about the Galaxy Note 4's launch in China. Apparently this is set to go down on September 26, in fact the exact same day on which we've recently heard that the new phablet would become available in South Korea. China Mobile will reportedly have two versions of the Note 4 on sale. The "regular" N9100 will be priced at CNY 5,399 ($878, €678), but may not support that particular carrier's flavor of 4G. And then there's the N9108, which will work on China Mobile's 4G network, and will cost CNY 5,199 ($846, €653). That's pretty much in line with what the Galaxy Note 3 went for when it arrived last year - China Mobile sold it for CNY 5,399, while the other carriers asked for CNY 5,799. Anyway, don't forget to take all of this information with a grain of salt for now, since it comes from just one guy. Source (in Chinese) | Via 1 (in Chinese) • Via...

Close to 2m Android One smartphones to be sold in India

According to MediaTek Vice President Mohit Brushan there could be demand for between 1.5 million and 2 million Android One smartphones by the end of the year in India. His company is making the Cortex-A7-based chips for Micromax, Karbonn and Spice's Android One smartphones. The first Android One devices are using the MediaTek MT6582 chipset and cost between 6,399 INR and 7,000 INR or below €90, which is bound to stir the market. According to PwC India's leader Mohammad Chowdhury the main competition is priced above 7,000 INR. Android One smartphones aren't the best equipped but promise to offer fluid software and hardware and OS updates that come straight from Google, making the platform sound much more serious than those pimped-out Android devices that rarely see an update in their...

Apple Watch Edition price to start at $5,000, analyst believes

The Apple Watch is arriving early 2015 in three versions - Watch, Watch Sport and Watch Edition. The Watch Sport is going to cost $349 as Apple announced last week, but according to long-time Apple analyst John Gruber, the gold Watch Edition version could retail for as much as $4,999. The reason for the high price tag is that Apple is manufacturing the Watch Edition with solid 18-karat gold. It's not plated or coated. This kind of affair in watchmaking comes at a cost. According to Gruber, at the very least, the Watch Edition is going to retail at $1,999. However, that's as optimistic as he's willing to go. He even goes on to compare the Apple Watch Edition to the more "affordable" Rolex watches stating that the $5,000 price tag isn't as ridiculous as it might initially appear. Furthermore, the analyst speculates that the Apple Watch with stainless steel and sapphire glass is going to retail for $999. Whether these predictions will turn out true or will be far from reality, will become clear only when Apple discloses the pricing of the Watch. Source |...

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to hit South Korea this month

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is rumored to launch by the end of September in South Korea. SK Telecom is allegedly launching the phone's pre-order campaign tomorrow alongside its competitor carries KT and LG U+. September 26 is touted as the launch date of the phone for the three carriers. An unnamed SK Telecom representative said there should be no problems with stock shortages of the new phone. Rumor has it, telecoms are ready to launch the phone as soon as possible, but don't have the green light from Samsung to do so. However, the company might be considering launching the Galaxy Note 4 earlier than originally planned in order to give the iPhone 6 Plus a run for its money. Earlier in the spring, the Galaxy S5 launched earlier than expected as well, but for entirely different reason. Back then, South Korean regulators imposed a 45 day phone sales ban on the carriers violating laws that specify the maximum subsidy or a phone. Source |...

Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have just 1GB of RAM

Apple made a big deal of the number of transistors in the latest A8 chipset at the announcement event. Now we're sure it will run things smooth on the new Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus even if its GPU may not bring gaming graphics to the next level. Now however we learn the two devices won't be the multitasking monsters you might expect - according to early reviews of the devices both share the same limited 1GB of RAM. That sounds logical given they both use the exact same chipset - the Apple A8 but some rumors had it that the bigger iPhone 6 Plus will have more RAM. As is the iPhone 6 Plus has optical image stabilization on its 8MP camera, a bigger display with higher 1080p resolution, bigger battery and not much different from the smaller 4.7" iPhone. Before we get overly carried away with specs wars it's important to remember that iOS generally doesn't need much RAM to operate as smoothly as Android and the 1GB limitation probably won't be noticeable in most daily...

Lumia Cyan and Denim updates come to O2 Germany in Q4

O2 Germany has decided to push the Lumia Cyan and Denim updates at the same time. The roll out will happen as a single update package to eligible Lumia smartphones by the end of the year. This is bad news for Lumia owners using O2 Germany services since they'll have to wait a bit longer for their devices to jump to Windows Phone 8.1 (Cyan update). In the end, the carrier is saving itself the trouble of testing and launching two separate updates and has considered that combining them is for the better. Interestingly, a Reddit user from Ireland notes that O2 Ireland has already rolled out the Lumia Cyan update to its customers. Guess O2 Germany is experiencing difficulties that aren't yet disclosed. Anyway, the Lumia Denim update will come some neat features including launching Cortana from anywhere in the UI, new camera modes and 4K video recording at 24fps. The Lumia Denim update will first launch on Lumia 930, Lumia 1520 and Lumia Icon by the end of Q4 this year. It will be expanded over the entire compatible Lumia range shortly after that. Sony foresees $1.2 billion loss from its smartphone business

Sony has shared some bad news regarding its financial quarter forecast. The company is expecting its losses to quadruple due to "impairment" in its smartphone business. More specifically, in the summer of 2014, the company reviewed its stance on the mid-range smartphone segment and concluded that results weren't as bright as anticipated. As a result, Sony expects its Mobile Communications segment to lose $1.2 billion (180 billion yen). A cringing number indeed, which has made the company reevaluate its stance on the smartphone division. No longer will Sony seek significant sales growth, but instead focus on reducing risk, volatility and return more stable profits. Sadly, Sony will reduce its presence in the mid-range segment and change its strategy in certain geographical areas. Nothing specific has been mentioned, though. Still, further plans include focusing more on its high-end smartphones. The Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact are soon to launch and Sony is hoping they're going to be selling like hot cakes. We already reviewed the Xperia Z3 Compact and were charmed by its flare and great battery life. Source (pdf) |...
