Apple accounts for half of US phone activations in Q4

The September launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus has provided Apple with solid ground to maintain its ruling position on the US market. A newly published survey by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners reports that a dominating 50% of phone activations during 2014 Q4 have been iPhones. Samsung is in second spot, but is left far behind with only half of Apple's share. What's more troubling for the Korean company is that they are down from 31% for the same period of 2013. LG is in third taking a tenth of the market, the rest distributed among Motorola, HTC and others. Brand loyalty towards the Koreans isn't strong either, with 25% of previous Samsung owners switching sides and opting for an iPhone instead. With LG that number is a tiny bit less bothering at 18%. It must be pointed out that the survey pool included a somewhat low 500 subjects, which may influence the actual distribution after the top three spots. Source |...

Samsung Galaxy S6 to pack a 20MP camera with OIS

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S6 is a regular visitor to the rumor mill. This time, industry insiders from the Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEM) subsidiary hint that the top-end smartphone will pack a 20MP main camera with optical image stabilization. Last year's poor financial results of SEM were caused by the predominant market distribution of low-end camera modules with small profit margins. What's interesting is that profits for this year are expected to be on the rise, thanks to the production of premium 16MP and 20MP OIS camera modules. We haven't seen Samsung make a 20MP stabilized camera yet, but who would be more likely to rock it, if not the upcoming flagship. While Samsung has previously been caught employing Sony sensors, this report in Korean media suggests that won't be the case for the Galaxy S6. And with the likely utilization of an in-house chipset for the future flagship, a home-brewed camera will further increase the Korean giant's profits. Source | Via (in...

ColorOS 2.0.5i Beta now available for Oppo Find 7 and 7a

Oppo has been hard at work developing its own flavor of Android - ColorOS and the new 2.0.5i Beta looks better than ever. A recent announcement made it clear that the OS is now available for download to eager Oppo Find 7 and 7a users with other model builds pending. ColorOS has been long in the works and as most of you surely know it represents Oppo's own take on Android. The platform is entirely build upon the aforementioned Android 4.4.4 KitKat and while most of the apparent changes in ColorOS are visual, the package is more than a simple custom launcher. Oppo extends much deeper than the exterior would suggest. The latest beta version of the custom ROM comes with a lot of new features, which Oppo claims are a direct embodiment of the needs of its users. In addition to being graphically impressive, the 2.0.5i build boasts a few interesting new tricks, as showcased in the promo video below. For one, the app drawer has been fitted with a Batch App Edit option. It looks really snappy and simplifies the often tedious task of rearranging large numbers of shortcuts. It seems to also allow for mass uninstall, which is indeed helpful for spring cleaning and tidying up. Other nice little additions include a Super Macro feature, which allows for extreme digital zooming and again, judging from the video, works pretty well. There's also a customizable backup location and an in-depth notification control center. The changelog is also full of numerous fixes and the user reception on Oppo's message board seems to be generally positive with a prevailing opinion that ColorOS is really starting to take shape. For the time being, the sizable 970MB ROM is available only through the download center, but an OTA from ColorOS V2.0.4i Beta is set to start seeding on Monday. If you are feeling adventurous and want to check out the updated platform, be sure to back-up your date prior to flashing and check back with impressions and opinions. Source |...

Qualcomm to provide Samsung with a modified Snapdragon 810

The Snapdragon 810 was set on to be the chipset of choice for the majority of this year's flagships, but persistent rumors of overheating problems have shaken Qualcomm's dominant position. Reports surfaced, stating that Samsung will opt for its in-house Exynos silicon to avoid potential delays in production. Industry insiders, however, have stated that Qualcomm is developing an updated version of the SoC for Samsung to use. The new release will be available to the Korean company in March, which poses the question whether the Snapdragon 810 will actually make it in time for the Galaxy S6. The piece of news comes as a bit of an acknowledgement by Qualcomm of the chipset's issues, which the company has strenuously denied so far. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 is featured in a number of already announced top-tier smartphones, including the LG G Flex2 and the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro. Those manufacturers have similarly denied facing complications with the SoC. It is unclear whether the updated version will be available to those companies too or it will be a Samsung exclusive. Original Moto X and G for Republic Wireless get Android 4.4.4

The Moto G from 2013 (pictured below) is now in the process of being updated to Android 4.4.4 KitKat. No, this isn't a blast from the past, as we're only talking about the units sold by Republic Wireless. And unfortunately while other Moto devices sold elsewhere have already received the tasty treat called Android 5.0 Lollipop, if you bought a Moto G from Republic Wireless you'll have to make do with the last iteration of KitKat for now. The situation is similar for the original Moto X sold by Republic, with the sole difference being that its Android 4.4.4 update will only start rolling out next month. The Moto E offered by this carrier is also getting an update, but a smaller one that's entirely security-focused. As the Moto E is already running Android 4.4.4 KitKat, this won't bump its version upwards. The Moto X and Moto G do go from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4. As for Lollipop, the small carrier promises that it's hard at work on making that happen. No timelines though, so one might wonder what's taking so long. Source |...

Coolpad to launch 4.7mm thin Ivvi smartphone soon

Last year Coolpad launched the Ivvi sub-brand of smartphones, and it looks like 2015 might be the year when the entire world hears about it. That's because the next Ivvi device will apparently stand out from the pack in a big way. Or rather, small. See, the company's been teasing an upcoming phone that will be just 4.7mm thin. That's insane, and if true it means this Ivvi device will become the thinnest smartphone in the world, taking that crown away from the 4.75mm Vivo X5 Max - which itself only let the Oppo R5 have the title for little over a month. It's a big battle, this, to be sure. It's not clear if Chinese consumers actually care so much about smartphone dimensions, but the companies making mobile devices over there sure do. Over the past couple of years or so all of the holders of the "world's thinnest" title came from China, and the new Ivvi handset will be no exception. The phone will sport a 4.7-inch touchscreen, and it looks like it will be made out of plastic. This teaser image is all we have for now, so we can't tell you anything about its other specs just yet. But we assume those details will leak out...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 will be getting a 64-bit CPU bump too

It was just yesterday we saw the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 (SM-T333) running on a Snapdragon 410 chipset, offering a performance upgrade over the previous generation Snapdragon 400 chip and also a future-proof 64-bit processor. The specs of the updated devices were spotted in the GFX Bench. Today we got a report on another slated from the Tab 4 series - the Galaxy Tab 4.0 10.1. The new SM-T533 model was spotted on the Bluetooth database and judging by the model number, the new Tab 4 10.1 should also be running on the Snapdragon 410 chipset. There is only one more member from the Tab 4 lineup - the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0, which we bet would be getting a 64-bit upgrade as well. We expect the hardware refresh of the Galaxy Tab 4 slates to be made official on the MWC expo in Barcelona in March, or shortly after. Does this mean we won't be getting a new Galaxy Tab 5 series in a while? Only time will tell. Source |...

HTC One (M9) a.k.a. Hima to have a US-exclusive Developer Edition

The HTC One (M8) successor rumored as HTC Hima or One (M9) is pretty much everywhere these days. The still unannounced device has leaked numerous times in specs, features, live images, camera samples, among other pieces of intel. The next One flagship should be announced at MWC, but HTC just can't keep it under wraps. And while we are waiting for the official premiere to happen next month, we can bring you some more exciting news. According to @upleaks, the HTC One (M9) will be also get Developer Edition, but this one will be exclusive only for the USA. Naturally this particular One (M9) unit will be carrier-unlocked and SIM free, plus it will come with unlocked bootloader. There is no info on pricing and availability, but HTC has released such editions in the past, so it isn't much of a...

Meizu m1 mini leaks in a live photo

The Meizu m1 mini has finally been revealed to us in full after only catching glimpses of it for some time. A photo has popped up on Chinese social network Weibo with the m1 mini pictured next to the existing m1 note. The 5-inch screen was already confirmed and now we see exactly how much smaller the mini looks in real life, compared to the 5.5-inch m1 note. The curious bit about this image is that the m1 minis aren't running the company's proprietary Flyme OS Android overlay, unlike the m1 note beside them. The device in the middle shows a stock Android homescreen, while the right m1 mini appears to be running Yun OS, another Chinese take on Android. This goes in line with previous news, stating the Meizu m1 mini will be a multi OS device, coming with your choice of Meizu's Flyme OS, Yun OS, developed by Alibaba, and Ubuntu. The stock Android version was unexpected and it remains to be seen whether it will be another option to purchase, or is a pre-production model for development purposes. Either way, the Meizu m1 mini is expected to be unveiled on January 28 at the company's "Connected"...

HTC One (M9) Plus specs revealed by AnTuTu

Another entry in the line of HTC leaks this week sheds more info on the specifications of the upcoming One (M9) Plus phablet. The larger sibling to the company's anticipated flagship has popped up on AnTuTu in what is what looks like a carrier-specific version, bound for the Chinese market. The PowerVR G6200 GPU is bundled with several Mediatek chipsets, including the MT6595 and the MT6795. One might easily expect that the top-of the-line phablet will pack the higher grade MT6795 silicon, but what's disconcerting is the CPU clock rate of 1.95GHz. The CPU's powerful Cortex-A57 big cores in the big.LITTLE architecture can tick at up to 2.2GHz, but perhaps have been toned down a notch in this particular case. The performance of the device looks uninspiring, however, lagging behind the Sony Xperia Z2, a year-old flagship device with a Snapdragon 801 under the hood. The One (M9) Plus is also beaten in the benchmark by the Xiaomi Mi3, which packs an even older Snapdragon 800. Normally we wouldn't expect a flagship HTC handset to come with anything other than the latest Qualcomm chipset, but this particular bit aligns nicely with previous rumors of two versions. Granted, it was supposed to be the One (M9), rather than its Plus sibling, but mixing up the two is not hard at the rumor stage. The new leak also restates that the One (M9) Plus will feature a QHD display, which could possibly be the culprit for the relatively low score. Thanks to Mr. A for this...

First HTC One (M9) camera samples leak out

It seems more and more pre-production samples of the eagerly anticipated HTC One (M9) have gotten into people's hands, as the leaks have started pouring over the last few days. Now we get to feast our eyes on some camera samples, supposedly taken with the upcoming top-of-the-line smartphone. The images have been taken with HTC devices carrying model numbers 0PJA13 and 0PJA10, which could be the rumored duo One (M9) and One (M9) Plus. So far, it has been stated in numerous leaks that the next-gen HTC flagship will be equipped with a Sony 20.7MP sensor, and the images don't seem to confirm that. Alleged HTC One (M9) camera samples While the subject matter isn't overly exciting, the resolution reveals more interesting news. The photos are obviously shot in 16:9 but at 5376 x 3024 pixels they run 112 pixels outside of the sensor's 5264 x 3960 expected dimensions in the horizontal direction. If we're talking about the IMX220 sensor used in several generations Sony Z-series flagships, that is. That could mean one of several things. First one that pops to mind is that these shots were simply taken with different devices other than the HTC One (M9). Alternatively, the sensor of choice for the future flagship is not the Sony 20.7MP one we've seen, but a new one which could even have a 16:9 native ratio. Of course, you can always follow the source below and dig through the EXIF data, if you want to draw your own conclusions. Otherwise, patiently waiting for the official announcement at MWC is always an option. Source |...

Huawei MWC event is set for March 1

The increasingly popular Chinese tech manufacturer Huawei has fixed a date for its MWC event and has even started sending out invitations. The conference is set for March 1 at 3 PM local time (4PM GMT) with a promise of new "surprises that will empower you to set your dreams free". We are definitely excited to see what Huawei has in store, especially considering all the attention it has been receiving in the rumor mill. First of all, as most of you have surely heard, the ever-growing popularity and increasing brand awareness Huawei will most probably act on its plans to ditch the Ascend sub-brand and start putting out the next device lineup without using the moniker. This is a huge step and is definitely linked to the company's impressive 33% revenue rise during 2014. So the Ascend Mate7 might just be the last flagship to bear the particular branding. Speaking of flagships, Huawei should have a couple in the works that is if rumors are true. First up we have been hearing a lot about the Huawei P8. Last month we covered a few interesting photos of what was said to be the metal chassis for the device and even before that we got a hint at possible specs. The smartphone should pack a 5.2-inch Full HD display with a 2.5D curved glass and run on the HiSilicon Kirin 930 chipset built on TSMC's 16nm process and packing an octa-core processor within. Next up we are hoping that the MWC event will clear the smoke around the successor of the Ascend Mate 7, the Mate 8. Not much is known about the alleged device, but a few questionable photos have been resurfacing. In any case the prospect of a new addition to the phablet family is very exciting as well. So be sure to check back on March 1 for our coverage on the Huawei event and all the exciting announcements that may be in...

Google strikes a deal with Sprint to offer wireless service in the US

Just a day after there were reports that Google is planning to offer wireless service in the United States, Bloomberg Businessweek is reporting that that the Mountain View company has reached an agreement with Sprint, under which it will operate as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) - paying for capacity on the carrier's network and then selling the service to its own customers. The deal is said to be facilitated by Masayoshi Son, the president of SoftBank, which bought Sprint in 2013, and the report notes that the search giant may start its service as soon as this year. Although it isn't yet clear why exactly Google is stepping into the wireless business, the report speculates that the move could enable the company to sell mobile ads to an even larger...

Alleged details on the battery life of Apple Watch leak

According to a report in 9to5Mac, the battery performance of the soon to be released Apple Watch will not blow users away. Cupertino is allegedly targeting 19 hours of mixed use for its highly anticipated wearable device. The active application use goal for the Apple Watch is tipped to range between 2.5 and 4 hours. Standby time target is three days, while sleeping mode should help the device last for four days. The smartwatch will likely reach 2-3 days in standby or low-power mode though. The device's fitness tracking software is targeted to render four hours of usage on a charge. In timepiece mode with the screen and all animations on, Apple Watch will reportedly last about three hours. The manufacturer does not expect users to utilize the feature often. The powerful hardware of the Apple Watch is unsurprisingly the main reason for its high power consumption. The S1 chip inside the product is said to be as powerful as the A5 solution in the current iPod Touch. Apple is said to be extensively testing the wearable device. About 3,000 units are reportedly in circulation. Source...

Sony makes the purple Xperia Z3 official in Hong Kong

Since last week, we've seen the purple variation of Sony's Xperia Z3 leaked not once, but twice. First in renders, then in some live images. And today the time has finally come for the smartphone maker to make this hue official. It has done so for the Hong Kong market, and it's still unclear whether we'll ever see the purple Z3 for sale anywhere else. This move is probably meant to attract some more attention for the Xperia Z3 which is getting a little bit long in the tooth by now. With an Xperia Z4 clearly already in the works, Sony needs to do something to entice people to buy the previous flagship. And this may just be it. The new version will be out in Hong Kong by the end of January. It will be priced at HKD 4,998, which means about $644 or €567. Spec-wise, there's absolutely no difference between the purple model and any other Xperia Z3. Source |...

HTC One (M9) now pictured in new, clearer live images

The HTC One (M9) (or HTC Hima as it's apparently been codenamed) has been leaking a lot over the past few weeks. That said, in the last few days the leaks have intensified a lot, and today we have a new round of pictures for you. These two images are the clearest we've seen so far, and they too allegedly depict HTC's successor to the One (M8) from last year. The photos confirm the rumor saying that HTC will move the power button to the side, underneath the volume buttons. This will be a first for the company, as its previous flagships had that on the top. Also, you'll adjust the volume for the One (M9) using two individual buttons, and not one longer button like its predecessor has. The source of the images has also 'confirmed' that the One (M9) will sport an octa-core processor and 3GB of RAM, but he or she hasn't shared any additional details. Based on past leaks and rumors, the smartphone should come with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 SoC, a 5-inch 1080p touchscreen, and a 20.7 MP rear camera (no more UltraPixels). It's still unclear what HTC will choose to call this device, whether One (M9) or something else. It could be made official on March 1 at the company's MWC press...

Meizu M1 Mini will have three OS versions, 5" screen after all

Meizu has already outed the first member of its new M1 family, the M1 Note. But the phablet has long been rumored to get a smaller sibling, ever since the M1 project was known just by its codename - Blue Charm. And Meizu is now quite close to unveiling the M1 Mini. The official introduction will take place on January 28 at a special event. In the meantime more details about the upcoming smartphone have been leaked. Contrary to what the latest rumor on the matter said, the M1 Mini is actually going to come with a 5-inch touchscreen, and not a 4.7" panel. The resolution stays the same, though, at 720p. The rear camera will be a 13 MP unit, and it will have a LED flash too. The price of the M1 Mini will probably allow it to compete head-on with Xiaomi's best selling Redmi line. The M1 Mini is allegedly going to be sold for just CNY 799, which at the current exchange rates means around $128 or €112. The most interesting thing about the M1 Mini could, however, be the OS choice. Namely, it looks like you'll be able to choose from three separate versions of the phone. One will be running Flyme OS, Meizu's interpretation of Android. Another will employ YunOS, developed in part by Alibaba, and the final variant will run Ubuntu. If this actually happens, the M1 Mini will be the first affordable smartphone to sport the Ubuntu mobile platform. Anyway, we're less than a week away from the big unveiling, so we're going to find out soon enough. All of this information reportedly comes from some leaked flyers about the device. As for other specs of the M1 Mini, unfortunately they haven't surfaced yet. Source 1 • Source 2 | Via 1 • Via...

Huawei's upcoming Mate 8 phablet allegedly leaks in pictures

We've already told you that Huawei is planning on dropping the Ascend sub-brand for Android smartphones this year, so you shouldn't be surprised to hear that the successor to the Ascend Mate 7 phablet will be called just Mate 8. That much makes sense, given the Chinese company's new strategy (though the jump to the number 7 last year, not so much). Huawei Mate 8 Anyway, the images you can see above have been leaked today, and the source is claiming that they are showing us the Huawei Mate 8 for the first time. However, the shot of the phone's back seems to be identical to a picture that leaked back in December and was then said to portray the upcoming Ascend 7 Plus. Now obviously Huawei may have changed its mind on the naming scheme in the meantime - these two could be one and the same device, due to eventually be outed as the Mate 8. As you'd expect, the overall design has stayed close to what we've seen on the Mate 7, though with a much bigger speaker grille on the back. As for specs, we have none to speak of, as they weren't detailed in this leak (and, interestingly, nor in the previous one we talked about). As with all such leaks, you have hopefully had a well sized grain of salt near you while gazing at the alleged Mate 8. At this point, there's no way to tell if these are real images of the phablet or not, so keep that in...

Verizon matches projected revenue in Q4, but posts a net loss

Verizon cut the estimates for its Q4 performance a few days ago, but now the official numbers are in. The company keeps growing, with new customers joining its wireless and wired networks, revenues are up but the company still posted a net loss of $2.15 billion. The revenues matched analysts' expectations, reaching $33.2 billion, up 6.8% from the fourth quarter of 2013. The revenues for the full year 2014 have also improved since 2013, up 5.4%. Even so, the company reported a loss of $0.54 per share, down from an earnings per share of $1.76 in the final quarter of the previous year. The company drew in 1.5 million new 4G LTE connections, though some of those are from people switching away from feature phones and 3G smartphones. 78.6% of phones on Verizon's network were smartphones, up from 70% the year before. Tablet growth was strong too, with 1.4 million new tablets hooking up to the carrier's 4G network. Revenues from Verizon's wired services wend down 1.6% to $9.6 billion, though the operating margin improved. The fiber-optic network is enjoying rising revenues (11% up compared to 2013) and Verizon says that 59% of its fiber optic customers are using the FiOS Quantum, which offers speeds between 50Mbps and 500Mbps. The carrier is working to transfer users connected over the aging copper network to FiOS, upgrading 255 thousand connections in 2014. The new network offers more speed and requires less maintenance than the copper network. Source |...

Lumia 435, 735 and 930 to get Windows 10, others in doubt

Microsoft is determined to boost the adoption just-unveiled Windows 10 OS as much as possible. In addition to offering a free copy of Windows 10 for the first year of availability to anyone with a Windows 8.1, Windows 8 and Windows 7 license, the company is set to bring the OS to as many current mobile devices as possible. In a blog post by Microsoft's own Chris Weber the low-end Lumia 435 is quoted specifically to receive the OS update. The article also confirms that the midrange Lumia 735 and the top-tier Lumia 930 will join the Lumia 1520, which we all witnessed at the press conference to be the pioneer Windows 10 smartphone. The stated model numbers are more of a representation of Microsoft's plans for Windows 10 to span the majority of the lineup, rather than an exclusive list of devices that will get it. Meaning that your precious Lumia 830 is very likely to be on that list, for example. And also implicating that older phones may be left out. The probable limiting factor may turn out to be the low amount of RAM on older smartphones. A multitude of older Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices came with only 512MB of system memory, which may have been sufficient for those OS releases, but it's unclear if it will handle the future...

ARM predicts 64-bit phones with LTE will cost $70 in 2015

ARM has 15 predictions for 2015. The company is best known for the basic design of processors that power the majority of smartphones, tablets and all sorts of appliances, so it has its finger on the pulse of technology. For smartphones the company is predicting that half of the units that will ship this year will use the new ARMv8 64-bit instruction set. Another prediction pegs the price of a 64-bit, LTE-enabled smartphone at "under $70," so it flagships will certainly not be the only devices driving the adoption of new tech. Biometrics will be huge and will mesh with increased focus on hardware-based security features. That's good news since ARM is predicting a huge surge of mobile payments as more and more people opt to replace their credit card with a smartphone. Wearables will be another defining feature of 2015, but they must deliver relevant info to succeed. The company predicts that the buzz will start shifting away from wearables and onto robotics. The Internet of Things industry will mature, leading to common standards and a lot of competitive products from Chinese vendors. ARM envisions mobile playing a key part in healthcare in rural areas - smartphones and smartwatches can already track your pulse and blood-oxygen level and we're yet to see what the 2015 flagships will add to the biometric sensor array. Competition will heat up as device manufacturers and even Internet companies acquire semiconductor firms to better integrate into their products. ARM sees wireless charging becoming more important and makers will improve both design and the efficiency of such products. That's the bright future that's just ahead of us, according to ARM, and of course the company's tech will power a great deal of it. How such optimism survives its encounter with reality remains to be seen - you can't get solid LTE coverage everywhere and the millions of new phones on the network won't make things any easier. HTC One (M9) Plus shows up in photos, specs unveiled

HTC leaks are coming by the dozen these days. Yesterday we showed you the upcoming HTC One (M9), sized up against the previous generation. Today we're being treated to its potential bigger brother, the One (M9) Plus, if the company's press team actually decides to call it that. HTC One (M9) Plus The Plus model will come with a 5.5-inch display of 1440x2560 pixel resolution, the source claims. The mighty Snapdragon 810 will run the show, joined by 3GB of RAM in a year when most flagships will likely come with 4GB. From a design standpoint we see a slight departure from the established HTC styling. The bottom speaker grill will be replaced with a hardware button, where the fingerprint scanner is to be housed. How that is going to affect the HTC's famed audio performance remains to be seen. The back is more typical HTC One material with dual cameras and two-tone LED flash. Apart from being a design element, the larger ring around the lens may hint at a 20.7MP main shooter. It is reportedly going to be utilized in the regular One (M9), which has also appeared with a large cutout in its metal unibody. The Taiwanese manufacturer is holding its "Utopia in progress" event on March 1, where all speculations will be put to an...

Another batch of Yureka Yu phones sold out in 4 seconds

In has become the norm for emerging Asian brands to create a hype over new devices with the flash sale strategy, and Yureka is no different. After last week's 10,000 Yureka Yu's sold out in 3s, today's batch of 15,000 phones took just 4s to leave the warehouse, parent company Micromax claims. The anticipation was so intense last time, that Amazon.in store crashed upon launch. Apparently, they were better prepared this time, as no such issues were reported. Unsurprisingly, a new lot is prepared for next week, following the same registration-based model. It will take place on January 29 at 2pm, and registration is open starting today at...

YotaPhone now selling for just $211 in India

The dual-screen smartphone, YotaPhone, launched in India back in October last year. At that time, it was priced at INR 23,499 ($382). The device received its first price cut the following month, bringing its value down to INR 17,999 ($292), and now, the smartphone's price has again been slashed, this time by INR 5,000 ($81), which means that it can now be purchased for just INR 12,999 ($211). As we've already noted, the YotaPhone features two displays - the one on the front is a 4.3-inch, 1280x720 LCD, while that on the back is a 4.3-inch, 640x480 resolution electronic paper display. LG G Flex 2 to launch in South Korea on January 30

LG has announced that its G Flex 2 smartphone, which the company unveiled at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), will be officially released in South Korea on January 30, followed by other countries around the world, including the US. The device, which will be offered by all three of the country's mobile carriers, will cost 800,000 South Korean Won ($737). The G Flex 2 is the company's first mobile device to feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 chipset, which has received some bad press lately, especially after there were reports that Samsung ditched it in favour of its own processors for its upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S6. However, LG has clarified that it has had no issues with the SoC, and has termed its performance as "quite satisfactory". Other specifications of the device include a 5.5-inch 1080p display, a 2.1 MP front-facing camera, and 13 MP rear camera. The Korean version comes with 32GB of expandable internal memory, and 2GB of RAM (instead of 3GB like the international variant). The smartphone also packs in a 3,000 mAh battery. Source |...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 is getting a 64-bit version

The Samsung Galaxy Tab series has yet to break into the 64-bit world, but it seems that the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 will get a Snapdragon 410-based refresh. The company has used this chipset in several of its Galaxy A devices, plus a handful of others. Other than the chipset change, there doesn't seem to be anything else that has changed. The info comes from GFX Bench, which reports a 1,280 x 800px screen (ignore the 12.8" size, this is probably due to a wrong DPI setting). The tablet still comes with 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, but it has now moved to quad Cortex A53 and Adreno 306. No Lollipop though, it was running Android 4.4.4 KitKat. Anyway, the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 packed a 3.15MP camera on the back that manages 720p video capture and a 1.2MP camera on the front that tops out at 480p. This model lacked NFC and mobile connectivity, though Snapdragon 410 offers the same 150Mbps LTE speeds of its 32-bit predecessor so should Samsung unveil an LTE version we won't see a difference in speed. Upcoming HTC Desire 626 leaked, specs and photos

HTC is evidently working on diversifying its midrange lineup with another device. Leakster @upleaks has provided information on the brand new Desire 626 handset. HTC Desire 626 The new smartphone, codenamed A32, is built around a 5-inch display of 1280x720 pixel resolution. Apparently two versions are being developed, one more powerful than the other. The former variant features a Mediatek MT6572 chipset with an octa-core CPU, clocked at 1.7GHz, and 2GB of RAM. The lower-specced version runs on the popular Snapdragon 410, with a single GB of RAM, bringing it close to the current Desire 620. Both models come with a 13MP main camera, and a 5MP front shooter, which lacks a flash, the images reveal. Storage is reported to be 16GB, which will likely be expandable. A rather low-capacity 2000mAh battery powers either version. The smartphone will run Android 4.4 upon launch, but a Lollipop update will follow later on. Obviously, this info is yet to be confirmed, and price and availability is...

LG denies any Snapdragon 810 heating issue on the G Flex 2

While there have been recent concerns over the heating issues of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, LG, who is using the same processor on its upcoming G Flex 2, doesn't seem to have any problem. At a press event for the G Flex 2, LG vice president for mobile product planning Woo Ram-chan said "I am very much aware of the various concerns in the market about the (Snapdragon) 810, but the chip's performance is quite satisfactory," and "I don't understand why there is an issue over heat." The Snapdragon 810 heating issues that Ram-chan dismisses here were apparently severe enough for Samsung to abandon the 810 chipset for its upcoming Galaxy S6 and instead use its own Exynos processor only this time. We will have to wait and see if the heating issues are real or not when we test the G Flex...

Alleged live photo of Oppo Find 9 makes the rounds

Purported live photo of Oppo's next smartphone flagship made the rounds online. The handset will likely sport the name Oppo Find 9 when it goes official. The leaked image suggests that the successor of Oppo Find 7 will be a big fella. We shouldn't expect any radical changes in the design of the device's front either - it appears to be quite similar than the face of the smartphone it is bound to replace. Rumored specs of Oppo Find 9 include Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset and a generous 4GB of RAM. All in all, the handset will likely be ready to rub shoulders with the best in its class. Case maker images allegedly confirm HTC M9 design

Alleged renders from a case maker in China appear to confirm the design of HTC's upcoming One (M9) flagship. Purported live photos of the latter leaked on a couple of different occasions over the past couple of days. As you can see above, the leaked images give us another look at the upcoming smartphone's distinctively shaped camera. The latter is said to pack a 20.7MP sensor. The case renders also reveal that the power/lock key button of HTC Hima will all but certainly sit in its right side. HTC One (M7) and One (M8) had it placed on top. The case opening on top in the images will likely serve the IR blaster. HTC One (M9) will launch during MWC in Barcelona. Its rumored specs include Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC, 3GB of RAM, 5" 1080p display, and 20.7MP camera....

Google might soon become a wireless service provider

According to a report in The Information, Google is getting ready to become a wireless service provider in the United States. The move will allow the search giant to directly manage the call and data usage of its customers. Google's wireless service is said to utilize the infrastructure of Sprint and T-Mobile in the United States like other mobile virtual network operators do. This will allow the Mountain View-based based giant to save on the massive costs associated with building its own network. Google will allegedly try to undercut the already low rates that T-Mobile and Sprint offer. Originally, the company originally strived to launch the service in the fall of last year. Another Meizu m1 mini leak reveals 4.7-inch screen

We told you recently about the Meizu Connected press event, scheduled for January 28. The Meizu m1 mini is expected to be officially unveiled there, but if a whole week is too much waiting for you, here's some more news on the device. Contrary to previous rumors, which put the display size at 5 inches, the smartphone will apparently pack a smaller, 4.7-inch, screen. A protective rubber cover has been photographed in a Chinese store, indicating just that. In the expected price bracket a 1080p display was quite a stretch even for a 5-incher, but at 4.7 inches 720p is the best we could hope for. Protective cover • Rear camera Another detail that's been revealed is the single LED flash accompanying the rear camera of the m1 mini. The flash and overall proportions are different from the the big brother, the Meizu m1 note, so the blurry yellow photo could be the real deal. Again, specifications haven't been confirmed, but a Mediatek chipset with an octa-core processor is expected, with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage. Speculations will be put to an end in January 28, so we might as well just wait it out. Source 1 2 (in Italian) |...

HTC One (M9) compared to One (M8) in a new leaked image

Just yesterday we got the first ever leaked photos showing HTC's flagship for this year, the successor to the One (M8) from 2014. These obviously haven't been confirmed yet, but they do look pretty believable. The next One could be sold as the One (M9), and it's been reportedly codenamed Hima. The handset looks incredibly similar to the One (M8), a fact which has been made even more obvious by the image you can see below. This is a comparison shot, with the next generation phone on the left and its predecessor in the center. You should probably disregard the fact that the Hima looks quite a bit smaller than the One (M8), since it's not clear if this is an actual photo of the two lying side by side, or a composite image made up of a leaked shot showing the Hima and another image portraying the One (M8). That said, the new device obviously has much smaller bezels, so if the screen size does indeed stay the same at 5", then the Hima could at least be narrower, if not a tad shorter too. The design of the speaker grille underneath the display has changed somewhat, from generation to generation, as has the look of the front-facing camera and the sensor array sitting next to it above the screen. Windows 10 will run on phones, share apps with the desktop

Microsoft is unifying Windows 10 for large devices (8+ inch screens) and small devices (phones and small tablets). It has tailored the experience to the size class so you won't get a large desktop on your small phone, but many shared interfaces will make things feel familiar to users as they switch between form factors. Developers will be able to create apps that work on a desktop, a phone and even Xbox. Joe Belfiore demoed a special version of Office (still under development) running on a phone, but it will work just as well on a desktop. The People app will work accross device and will aggregate your contacts. The app will let you quickly start a call (regular or Skype) or message a contact. The upcoming Outlook update will feature Tinder-like swipe functionality - left for delete, right for flag. Meanwhile, composing emails will be handled by Word. Speaking of, Windows 10 will come with a rich set of Office apps - Word, Excel and PowerPoint. They have the full capabilities of their desktop counterparts, but can reflow docs so they fit better on the small screen. Maps features Cortana integration and the universal app makes it easy to plan a route on a computer and send it to your phone. Photos is another universal app. It features OneDrive integration and will sync photos from multiple devices, so you can view your entire photo collection from one place. The app will handle duplicates and burst-shots to avoid clutter and automatically group photos in albums. There's also auto-enhance that handles common issues with photos. As for upgrades, the Nokia Lumia 1520 has been confirmed it will get the upgrade - it was the device used to demo the OS. However, Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows Phone 8.1 users during the first year of availability. That doesn't mean some devices won't be left out though, stay tuned for...

That's the talk anyway, "Windows 10" will encompass everything phone-sized all the way up to the largest screens. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella will be joined by Terry Myerson (head of the Window team), Joe Belfiore (who is running the phone and tablet department), Phil Spencer (responsible for the Xbox division). Does this mean Microsoft has managed to meld PCs, smartphones and consoles? You can watch the livestream and find out, or just read our coverage as info comes in. The stream will start 9 AM Redmond time (that's Pacific Time), 5 PM UTC. We're not expecting any new hardware today, but a new version of Microsoft's mobile OS is exciting enough as it is. Oh, and Internet Explorer might finally be put to pasture in favor of a new, sleeker browser. ...

What to expect from today's Windows 10 event

What to expect from today's Windows 10 event As many of you surely know today, January 21 at 9:00 AM PST/ 5PM GMT Microsoft will be hosting an event centered around the future of Qindows 10. Expectations are understandably high and we are all waiting to see how the new One Windows ideology will be played out across a diverse array of devices form PC to tablets, smartphones and even consoles. Before we dive into the rumor mill to discuss what Microsoft may have in store keep in mind that the event will be live-streamed and will be available here, so you can follow along if you want. We will also be covering the announcements, so be sure to check back for anything you might have missed. Microsoft seems to be keeping true to its new development philosophy and when it comes to Windows 10 the Silicon Valley tech giant is opening up to users as early as possible for an engaging feedback process during the creation of the latest installment of the OS. The new Windows Insider Program and early technical previews are all meant to ensure maximum usability and software quality. Events like this are a welcome sight, especially when Microsoft is planning fundamental changes to their OS line. Hopefully the presentation will shed some light on yet unanswered questions. Here is what we expect to see at the conference. First of all, a few words about Windows 10 on mobile devices and more specifically smartphones. We are eagerly awaiting answers to a few very pressing questions regarding the popular smartphone OS and hopefully Microsoft will not make us wait any longer. First of all the debate is still on regarding the name that the new OS will arrive under on handsets. A lot of titles have been floating around, including Windows Phone, Windows Mobile and even plain and simple Windows 10. The latter would fit perfectly in the uniform platform concept, but an official statement on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Secondly we have the pressing question of WP8.1 GDR2 - the update that is still in question due to the new OS release. Microsoft users are still in the dark as to whether or not heir devices will get the OTA and more importantly will it be an upgrade to Windows Phone 8.1 or a jump to the new Windows 10. Keeping that in mind, today we are hoping to finally get some much needed information on future update plans as well as pricing, distribution, availability and eligibility of Windows 10 for smartphones. Windows 10 for desktops should theoretically be the cornerstone of the event. It is more or less consumer-oriented, hence the catchy name - Windows 10: The Next Chapter and we should see a lot more of Windows 10 actually demoed. As far as new features are concerned the new start menu and gesture interface, which we already showcased to some extent are sure to receive a lot of attention and hopefully we might get a clearer perspective on the new user UI. We have been getting a lot of hints of a dark theme interface, much like the one Windows Phone, but a closer look of the new task bar, theming options and color accents for different applications will be more than welcome. Another vital element of the new and improved cross-device user experience, that Microsoft promises is the "Continuum " interface. For those of you unfamiliar, it is an exciting new concept intended for 2-in-1 laptops and convertible tablets, like the Surface 3 Pro and Lenovo's Yoga series. Basically it makes the OS aware of the state the convertible device is currently in and adapts the interface to make it more usable for touch or keyboard input, respectively. The concept is very powerful and we have only seen a little glimpse of it and hopefully a longer demo session might make its way to the show floor today. But things get really interesting on the software side. First up we are eager to learn more about the unified application ecosystem and delivery platform that Windows 10 promises. Hopefully with the new Windows 10 we might see a unified set of tools that will make it possible for developers to release a single app and run it across all of the OS distributions. Microsoft needs to convince us of the feasibility of such a cross-platform approach and hopefully we will see some impressive demos of PCs, phones, tablets and even TVs running apps in unison at the event. This new approach to app...

Dual SIM Sony Xperia Z4 may be in the works

A new leaked document allegedly from a Federal Communications Commission listing could prove linked with a dual-SIM Sony Xperia Z4. If this turns out true it will be only the second flagship smartphone by Sony to have two SIM cards - the first was the Sony Xperia Z3 Dual. The listing refers to a model with type number PM-0851-BV with acknowledged dual-SIM capabilities. The document states the only hardware difference is in the second SIM socket. Just last week we saw an FCC listing for a PM-0850-BV, believed to be the Sony Xperia Z4. The device was also certified in Japan shortly before that. With just scrapes of documents and rumors flying about we can't help at feel eager to see the Sony Xperia Z4 in the flesh, hopefully during the Mobile World Congress a little over a month from...

Apple smartphone sales mark significant growth in Asia markets

A recent study on Apple's smartphone sales, carried out by Counterpoint, reveals a surprising level of success in various Asian markets. It turns out that ever since the California tech-giant ushered into the phablet market last September it has been steadily gaining ground in China, Japan and South Korea. The success of Apple's latest iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models was somewhat anticipated in Asia, as traditionally the market has been showing a very high interest in smartphones as a primary means of connectivity, rather than PCs or other tech. The numbers themselves are surprisingly high. The most dramatic increase, Counterpoint says, comes from Samsung's own domestic market. The global smartphone leader has naturally kept a tight hold on South Korea, with LG following at second place. After iPhone 6 hit the market, however Apple has registered a surge in market shares from 15% before the launch to a whopping 33%. This puts the Cupertino-based company firmly in second place and may have even had a detrimental effect on Samsung's comfortable market position, as the Korean manufacturer experienced a significant drop to around 60%. The 33% market share is a huge accomplishment on Apple's side and Tom Kang, research director for mobile devices at Counterpoint, had this to say: No foreign brand has gone beyond the 20% market share mark in the history of Korea's smartphone industry. It has always been dominated by the global smartphone leader, Samsung. But iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have made a difference here, denting the competition's phablet sales. Apple's success apparently extends even further into Asia. In Japan, a traditionally strong market for the US company, the latest device lineup brought about a staggering rise to 51% market share from a little below 20%, before the handsets hit stores. In China, where competition is incredibly tough, Apple has procured a 12% share. This may not sound like much, but it is enough to ensure third place in the market, right behind Xiaomi with 18% and Lenovo with 13%. Furthermore the modest share somewhat shadows the fact that Apple has registered a 45% growth in sales over the same period a year earlier, which again is a huge success story. Interestingly enough Samsung, currently the global smartphone leader is also having trouble in China. Its position fell drastically and the Korean manufacturer is now forth on the market with 9% of the sales. This is all part of a bigger trend, as Samsung has been fighting with a 37% decline in operating profits for the last three months over the same period a year earlier. Even though this is the fourth consecutive quarter of decline for the Samsung, there is light in the tunnel and analysis states that the free-fall is slowing...

Galaxy S6 to be unveiled on March 2 at MWC, executive confirms

A Samsung senior official has been quoted in Korean media, stating that the company's next flagship, the Galaxy S6, will indeed be announced at the MWC in Barcelona, specifically on March 2. What's more, Samsung has developed several prototypes and is yet to determine which exactly will become official. This goes in line with the multitude of contradicting rumors and leaked images. Apparently, the company is simply surveying user opinions, by feeding the buzzwords unibody and glass back panel to the press. Samsung still don't have their mind set on whether a dual-edge screen version will see the light of day, the same source claims. The choice of hardware is also a persistent topic in the news, with reports that Samsung will go for an in-house Exynos chipset instead of the Snapdragon 810. Meanwhile, an LG executive has denied that the company plans to reveal the G4 in Barcelona, instead focusing on wearables. The company's position is that with the May 2014 launch of the G3, they still have plenty of time to develop its successor. Source |...

Oppo U3 officially debuts, no 4x zoom unfortunatelly

The Oppo U3, the company's latest offering in the phablet realm, is now officially launched. As we suspected, however, the rumored 4x zoom lens turned out too good to be true, and a fixed focal length lens is all you get. Oppo U3 Still, the smartphone packs pretty respectable hardware. Built around the massive 5.9-inch display of 1080p resolution, the device features a 64-bit bit Mediatek 6752 chipset with an octa-core processor, clocked at 1.7GHz. It is paired with 2GB of RAM and the 16GB of internal storage is expandable. A 3,000mAh battery is next on the list of chief specs and the fast charging support means 30 minutes of charging can get you an impressive 75% charge (as long as you use a suitable charger). Imaging department is covered by a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP selfie snapper. The main unit on the back employs a Sony IMX214 sensor with a 1/3.06" diagonal and can pull off software tricks resulting in 50MP images, if you absolutely must make billboard-sized prints. The front camera utilizes wide angle glass and an LED flash for more flattering group selfies. Despite the colossal size of the phablet at 156.8 x 81 x 8mm and 195g, Oppo is keen to target it at a more graceful audience. The company is offering a Rabbit's Tail case, which is basically a fur ball, attached to the back cover, allowing for more secure hold by gentle fingers. Oppo U3 Rabbit's Tail Case The Oppo U3 runs on Android KitKat 4.4.4 out of the box. No word is out yet on prices and...

Bloomberg: Samsung won't use S810 in the Galaxy S6

There's a lot of talk going around that Qualcomm's latest flagship chipset - the Snapdragon 810 - has overheating issues, which may delay the launch of the flagship smartphones this year. Qualcomm, of course, refuted this and the rumors didn't stop the announcements of the LG G Flex 2 and the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro, both of which are powered by the chipset (though they are yet to launch commercially). Nevertheless there's a second report now that Samsung will ditch the S810 in favor of its own Exynos designs. Bloomberg quotes unnamed industry insiders, who say that Samsung has already made the decision but has not made it public. Stock of both Qualcomm and Samsung took a hit. Of course, Samsung would prefer to use its own chips as much as it can. The last few generations Samsung had to use Snapdragon due to increasing demand for LTE connectivity and Qualcomm's dominance when it comes to modems. Samsung has since solved the LTE issue and already has a chipset that will deliver the quad Cortex-A57 and quad Cortex-A53 that the Snapdragon 810 promises, but with a Mali GPU instead of Adreno. The Samsung Galaxy S6 is expected to launch soon after it's announced at the MWC, which spans late February/early March. Whether because of Snapdragon issues or to improve its self-reliance, Samsung has invested $15 billion for a new factory near Seoul to manufacture new chipsets that will likely go into the company' new flagship. Both Qualcomm and Samsung declined to comment on the Bloomberg...

Beastly Snapdragon 820 and 815 specifications leak

With the Snapdragon 810 still not completely out of the woods in regards to the recently debunked, presumable overheating issues and yet to make it into an actual mass-produced device all eyes are on Qualcomm to handle the situation gracefully and insure its future well-being. Weather or not the 810 SoC is problematic and could potentially boost rival MediaTek market shares is still open for debate, but it appears that Qualcomm has remained undaunted in its bright future, that is if today's leak is to be believed. A rather interesting photo came to our attention, which seems to show the future lineup of Qualcomm processors, hopefully set to come in 2015. This leak comes rather suspiciously only hours after a roadmap of planned MediaTek chips made it online, which is a bit odd, but we will still give it the benefit of the doubt and dive a little deeper in what it foretells about the future of mobile hardware. First on the list we have the Snapdragon 616. In many respects it seems like a logical continuation of the current Snapdragon 615. It should have the same eight Cortex A53 cores, although evidently clocked a little higher, between 1.8 GHz and 2.2 GHz. Besides that the GPU has been bumped up to an Adreno 408 and the modem now supports Cat.6 LTE speeds. Next up we see the Snapdragon 620. It is said to be based on Qualcomm's own architecture, dubbed "Taipan" and is listed as having four cores. It should also have an Adreno 418 GPU, DDR3 RAM and Cat.10 LTE support. The Snapdragon 625 and 629 will be octa-core chips, with the same modem and GPU. They will, however use upgraded LPDDR4 1600 RAM with dual-channel memory support and will be based on 20nm HKMG technology. Going further down the list we reach the most interesting of the bunch. The Snapdragon 815 is listed as an octa-core beast with eight processor cores in a Big.Little setup. It will also feature an improved Cat.10 MDM9X55 LTE modem and an Adreno 450 GPU. LPDDR4 is also present and the chip will again be based on a 20nm technology. Last, but not least we have the all-mighty Snapdragon 820. It is a powerhouse, like nothing we have seen in a mobile device. Specifications list it as being powered by eight TS2 cores. Interestingly enough there is no mention of Big.Little architecture here, which might just mean that all eight cores will function simultaneously. RAM support and LTE are the same as the 815 model, but the GPU is a whopping Adreno 830. Perhaps most exciting though is that the top of the line chip will be based on the new 14nm FinFET manufacturing process, which has already been licensed to GlobalFoundries. We really hope that all of the above chipsets become a reality during 2015, even though GlobalFoundries and Samsung's facilities, who should be producing the Snapdragon chips will most definitely be busy manufacturing Apple's A9 for the new iPhone line around the end of 2015, so Qualcomm's 820 SoC might just be pushed to 2016. Again the credibility of the leak is unknown and the information should be taken with a grain of salt, but the future seems more than exciting for Qualcomm. What are your thoughts on the matter and the expected additions to the Snapdragon lineup? Source (in Chinese) |...

Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge won't be water resistant

In an apparent attempt to increase its profit margins, Samsung is reportedly doing away with the IP certification from the non-Active models of its upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S6. This, in layman's terms, means that the device, as well as its all but officially confirmed cousin, the Galaxy S6 Edge, will not be water resistant. It is worth noting that the South Korean company's previous flagship, the Galaxy S5, which the company launched last year, came with IP67 certification, which officially means "dust tight" and surviving up to 30 minutes at 1m underwater. The alleged move, though disappointing, isn't exactly surprising given that Samsung had a rough last year with S5 sales falling short of expectations, and the company reporting its lowest profits in more than two...
