Next Android Wear version to feature new single tap gesture and watch to watch messages

Industry sources have revealed some of Google's plans for the future of Android Wear. As most of you surely remember, version 5.1.1 of the wearable OS came out fairly recently and brought about quite a few new gestures and a much-needed rethinking of the main control scheme and menu arrangement. According to some new info, the next iteration promises even more advanced functionality. One of the main features, said to be in the works is a new single tap gesture, intended for interactive functionality on watch faces. Android Wear users have always been able to bring up the launcher with a single tap on the screen. While that is undoubtedly convenient, is seems that developers have been experimenting with other uses for the single tap, which Google is now picking up on. Currently, there are a few Wear apps in the Play Store that overwrite the aforementioned default behavior and implement some quick toggles or shortcuts, to be activated with a single press. Apparently the idea has its appeal and has prompted Google to integrate the behavior straight into the OS, so developers won't have to rely on undocumented tricks and hidden buttons to get the effect they desire. This new control scheme might have already been in planning for some time now, since the last Android Wear update made the launcher accessible through a swipe from right to left. Essentially freeing up the single tap. And of course, there is always the familiar "OK Google" voice trigger. A few leaked pictures provide examples as to what the new single tap gesture can be used for. They include cycling through variants of a watch face and changing up some of its aesthetics. Also, toggling a whole other state on an off. The new control scheme also opens up the possibility to interact with shortcuts on the watch face itself - bringing up more detail, or simply launching an app. Watch to watch messages is said to be another new feature coming to Android Wear. Apple Watch users already have to possibility to send doodles to one another and Google doesn't want to lack too far behind. The feature is called Together and should allow Wear users to send each other messages, photos, emojis, stickers and also doodles. The following code gives some info on the new feature. Oddly enough, however, the above snippet is said to come from a single watch face, rather than system-wide code. So, it could turn out to be restricted to a particular watch interface, which is kind of counter-intuitive. In any case, this info is preliminary and while it sounds credible enough, largely unconfirmed and subject to change. Last, but not least, the next Android Wear update is said to finally put an end to the LG G Watch R Wi-Fi drama and enable the feature. We hope to find more information on the future of Android Wear soon and learn more about the upcoming features, prior to the software rollout, which was initially set for July 28, but will likely be postponed for...

Microsoft will sell Windows 10 on bootable flash drives

Microsoft has confirmed that it will be selling Windows 10 on bootable USB flash drives instead of optical media. This will allow consumers to install the OS even on machines that don't have an optical disc drive built-in, such as some of the ultraportable notebooks. The USB drives will also likely be a good bit faster than the discs, making the process quicker. The OS is now currently up for pre-order on Amazon and is available on a USB drive. You can pre-order the Home edition for $119.99 and the Pro edition for $199.99, if you don't have an existing Windows machine that you can update for...

Microsoft Hyperlapse Mobile app is out of beta and free for all

Back in May Microsoft introduced one of its interesting new software projects - the Hyperlapse app. It offers a convenient and user-friendly way to build beautiful video sequenced with a hyperlapse effect. The app was originally developed for Windows Phone, along with an advanced paid version for Windows PC - Microsoft Hyperlapse Pro. However, the development team was nice enough to port everything over to Android as well. Now the said app is finished, has shed its beta tag and is available for free through the Play Store. What the Microsoft Hyperlapse Mobile app does is provide an almost zero-settings approach to creating beautiful video sequences. The software can either record the raw footage itself, or work with a readymade one and the effect speed is also variable - form 2x, all the way to a nauseating 32x. Achieving a pleasant end result is actually not an easy task. There is a lot more to Hyperlapse than simply speeding up playback. A lot of filtering and smoothing over has to be applied, all calculated specifically to match the giver input footage. This being said, the Hyperlapse Mobile app does require quite a bit of processing power to do its job. Initially, the Android version was limited to a handful of current devices, like the Samsung Galaxy S6, Nexus 5 and Sony Xperia Z3. Now, it seems to have shed most of these strict requirements, but results can vary if your handset is on the low-end side. As a minimum, you need 4.4 KitKat to run the app and once you get it installed, the rest is pretty straight-forward. We definitely urge you to give it a shot next time you take a walk, or a bike ride for some eye-catching results. A link to the Play Store can be found below. You can also pick up the Windows Phone version if you are on a Lumia device, or a trial of the full PC suite. Source |...

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 prototype allegedly pops up in live photo

The Galaxy Note 5 seems to be on everybody's minds lately, ours included and there is a pretty good reason for all the excitement. As far as we currently know, the next model in the legendary Note series is set for an early announcement and will be unveiled on August 12, alongside a beefier version of the Galaxy S6 edge - called the S6 edge Plus. Seeing how this is only a few weeks away, the rumor mill has been overflowing with specs leaks, speculations and even some pretty detailed renders, which we got the inside track on. But, even though most everything is now clear about the S6-inspired design of the Note 5, we are yet to see in in the flesh. Today's leak, however, might just bring us one step closer to that goal. A new live photo has popped up online along with the claim that it depicts the Galaxy Note 5. But before you get too excited, or rather endlessly disappointed, form the bulky square design - the device in the photo is for testing purposes only, otherwise known as a "mule". For anyone unfamiliar with the concept - it is a fully-functioning phone, with proper hardware, but encased in a shell to hide its design features. That way a manufacturer can safely distribute new products prior to their release to various parties for testing. Allegedly, this is exactly that - a Note 5 mule, shipped nor network testing in the Czech Republic. Now, this could very well be true, but even if it is, without any additional specs info or benchmark results from the said unit, the photo is merely a curiosity. Furthermore, the screen appears pretty low-res and brings some doubt as to whether it is the gorgeous 5.7-inch QHD Super AMOLED the Note 5 is said to use. And, as long as we are on the topic of hardware, let's review what else we currently know about the Note. It will be powered by the in-house Exynos 7422 SoC, a reworked version of the already familiar 7420 inside the Galaxy S6, but with built-in cellular modems this time. The camera setup should consist of a 16MP primary camera with OIS and a 5MP front-facing one. Memory is set at 4GB for RAM and 32GB of onboard storage. Battery capacity should be 4,100 mAh and the exact measurements are 153.3mm x 76.1mm x 7.9mm. Source |...

Ex-employees under scanner in Hacking Team breach probe

Six ex-employees of the Italy-based spy software firm Hacking Team are now being probed by the prosecutors in connection with the company's recent security breach that saw hackers allegedly stealing a whopping 400GB of data, according to a Reuters report. Interestingly, those being investigated now are already being probed for revealing Hacking Team's industrial secrets, an accusation that was levelled by the company's Chief Executive David Vincenzetti back in May this year. Both investigations have now been combined, the report notes. This comes less than a week after Vincenzetti said he suspected a foreign government was behind the...

Microsoft is pushing an OTA to enable 4G on select Lumia device in India

India's mobile market has been growing at amazing speeds, but despite the phenomenal rate of tech adoption, there is still a lot of work to be done as far as market reach and network coverage. India's 4G LTE networks are still in their infancy, yet, their growing spread and popularity has prompted Microsoft to push a new update, enabling 4G on select India smartphones. The said OTA simply enables 4G on a software level, which was hidden on a lot of units, intended for the local market, despite already having the required LTE modem. No official list of eligible devices has been shared yet and lots of user reports have been confirming support for a few models, like the Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520. Other viable candidates seem to be the Lumia 735, 830, 1320, 1020, as well as the new 640 and 640 XL and probably many others (feel free to correct us, if we are wrong). At this point any user feedback on the matter is appreciated, so if you are in India and received an OTA in the past few days, then be sure to check under network settings and report back if you now have the new 4G and 4G only...

Leaked Cortana build for android provides an early peak at Microsoft's cross-platform endeavor

We are pretty confident that by now most of you have met Cortana. And if you haven't had the chance to, it is now easier than ever thanks to an early leaked APK of the Android version, Microsoft promised a while back. The upbeat voice assistance can already be found on most current Windows Phone devices, but with the coming of Windows 10, Microsoft has really been working hard to make it smarter and even richer in character. Cortana does seem to stand out in some ways from competitors like Google Now and Siri, partially because of her "personal approach" to being an assistant, but also due to the dev team's desire to make a true cross-platform app, that is always there to help and seamlessly syncs across your digital world. The idea definitely breaks away from the current platform-exclusivity of most voice assistance but for the grand plan to pan out, the native apps of Android and iOS have to be simple and easy to use, yet powerful hubs for Cortana. We are yet to see any sign of Cortana on an Apple device, but, as promised, the Android beta is already here and despite a few rough edges it is a spectacularly fluent experience. We had the chance to play around with the app for a while and see how it measure up to the likes of Google Now and Siri and can safely say that Microsoft has done a splendid job. It is a beta build and we can't really say if it was intentionally set loose to the public for some feedback or simply managed to slip through the cracks, but either way, it is pretty functional and already seems almost ready for a public release. We really encourage you to check out the linked APK for yourself and here is what you can expect. The app's main interface is quite reminiscent of Google Now. It is full of info cards and links to things Cortana has deemed interesting based on your preferences. Naturally, this feed can be modified, as well as most everything else the assistant knows about you. Microsoft takes pride in how straight-forward the process is - there is the Notebook, in which Cortana stores all the info it has on you, as well as the data and accounts it has been granted access to - all editable! The promise is that this personal profile will synch across the whole Cortana ecosystem, so every one of your devices will be just as familiar with you. As far as actual voice functionality goes, Cortana is already pretty up to par with its rivals. It can set alarms, find quick snippets of information online, check the forecast, message or call your friends and many more. It is not quite as powerful as what has been demoed to us on Windows 10, but still incredibly impressive. Once again, hit the link and see Cortana in Action for yourself it is a pretty fun experience and a quick glance at what the future of smart personal assistants. Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 series to launch on July 20, rumor says

Samsung has been rumored to work on a Galaxy Tab S2 line of devices for many months now. The two members of this series will be an 8-incher and a 9.7-incher, and they'll both sport the 4:3 aspect ratio made popular by Apple's iPads (and since adopted by Google for the Nexus 9). Today a rumor from the Netherlands claims to shed more light on these two upcoming devices. Alongside the leaked renders you can see above and below, we find out that Samsung is apparently going to unveil the tablets on July 20, which is this coming Monday. Like their predecessors, the new Galaxy Tab S tablets will come with Super AMOLED touchscreens. There will be Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi + 4G versions. In all cases, the screen resolution used will be 2,048X1,536. The source of all these details says the Galaxy Tab S2 devices will be extremely thin, though we don't get a confirmation of the previously leaked 5.5mm profile. The tablets will be powered by an Exynos 7 chipset, possibly the 7420 also seen in the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, aided by 3GB of RAM. Source (in...

Exclusive: Google will soon let you have custom Gmail address for $2 per month

It seems Google is ready to launch a new custom Gmail address feature for standard Gmail users. While it has been possible for Gmail for work users to have a you@yourcompany.com address, if you are a standard Gmail users you would pretty much be stuck with the standard you@gmail.com address forever. With this new feature, however, you would be able to switch to a you@youraddress.com email address for your standard Gmail account by paying a small fee of $2 per month. For that all you get is the address with nothing extra but if that's all you wanted this might be a small price to pay for that over the more expensive Gmail for work plans. The option you see above in the screenshot appeared randomly next to the email on Gmail website. Clicking the 'Get started' button on the $2 plan opened another popup which asked for details such as if you have an existing domain or not (unfortunately, we don't have a screenshot of that). The popup also informed that the service is not yet available and will be coming in future. Unfortunately, the option has since disappeared from the Gmail website. We are not sure as of yet when the service will start rolling out to everyone. It seems for now Google is still gauging user interest by selectively showing it to...

Hugo Barra: Xiaomi is still at least a year away from entering the US phone market

Xiaomi has been doing quite well recently. The manufacturer's attention to design and detail as well as proper marketing and strive for brand recognition have really paid off and all led up to over 35 million of reported handset sales in H1 2015. This is quite an achievement to say the least, but despite all its popularity, Xiaomi still remains pretty confined to its local market, especially as far as phones are concerned. The Chinese manufacturer has an impressive portfolio of competitively priced tech, ranging from smart TV's all the way to headphones and power banks. After a few recent market expansions, in Europe and the US, the latter two can currently be picked up from most anywhere in the world without much hustle, straight from Xiaomi. But selling handsets in a very different story and despite the extending market reach, Xiaomi is still far from offering phones in the US and most-other international markets, for that matter. Hugo Barra, Xiaomi VP, has confirmed this time and time again, but has also admitted that the company does have eventual plans for a US expansion. In a recent interview, Barra was pressured for more info on the matter and he made it clear that selling smartphones in the USA is: no less than a year, plus, away... Potentially much more than a year away. We definitely understand that entering a new market, let alone the US market is an infinitely complicated process full of legal issues, certification requirements and production, shipping and support hustles. Still, Hugo Barra doesn't sound at all discouraged, so given the time and right conditions, we can only expect that Xiaomi will deliver on its promise and move up to well developed markets such as the US one. Amazon beats Black Friday with the first Prime Day sale

Amazon celebrated its 20th birthday on July 15 with a sale larger than Black Friday called Prime Day. Available only to Prime users, the sale proved to be a big success for the company. Worldwide order growth increased by 266% over the same day last year and 18% more than last year's Black Friday. In the US, Amazon shipped 47,000 TV sets, 41,000 Bose headphones and 14,000 iRobot Roomba 595 Pet Vacuum cleaners. Amazon's own Fire TV Stick flew of the shelves at the rate of 'tens of thousands" in just one hour. Fire tablets were popular too and more were sold than on Black Friday last year, but the exact number isn't disclosed. Despite proving to be a success, the first ever Amazon Prime Day was met with discontent by some customers. Their expectation was that the mega sale would include more tech related deals. For Amazon however, Prime Day did exactly what it was meant to - push users to try out the Prime service. On July 15 more new members tried Prime worldwide than any single day in the company's history. I am sure Amazon will try this again next year. Going into this, we weren't sure whether Prime Day would be a one-time thing or if it would become an annual event. After yesterday's results, we'll definitely be doing this again. Galaxy J7 found running the new Exynos 7580 chipset in India

Yesterday, Samsung announced two new budget smartphones in the Indian market, the Galaxy J5 and the Galaxy J7. While both are mid-range devices, there is something worth noting about the J7. The Indian model of the Galaxy J7 comes with the brand new Exynos 7580 chipset instead of the Snapdragon 615 seen on the Chinese variant of the phone. Like the 615, the 7580 is an octa-core chipset with eight unspecified CPU cores clocked at 1.5GHz and Mali-T720 MP2 GPU. Previously leaked benchmarks on Geekbench website reveal the Exynos chip beating the 615 in CPU benchmarks, although that particular variant was clocked slightly higher at 1.6GHz. We will be putting the new chipset through its paces in our full review and see how it compares against its Snapdragon rival. Thanks Devashish for the...

HTC kills its Grip fitness tracker, promises something better for the future

You may not remember this, but on March 1, at MWC, alongside the One M9, HTC also unveiled the Grip smart band. This fitness tracker was supposed to arrive in stores sometime during the spring, for a $199 price. We're well into summer now, and the Grip is still nowhere to be seen, even though it has been certified by the Bluetooth SIG just a few days ago. According to an official statement from HTC, the Grip will not be launched after all. At least not in the iteration that was showcased at MWC (and which we played with in our hands-on). Apparently this has happened because HTC "decided to align Grip with the entire product portfolio for health and fitness launching later this year". The company claims extensive wear testing and user feedback influenced the decision. So perhaps the Grip didn't prove to be as wear-resistant as HTC had hoped. Or its focus groups simply didn't like it. Either way, a new and improved version of the Grip should be here before the end of the year. As for what that "entire product portfolio for health and fitness" may be, it's anyone's guess at this point. But it does look like HTC is getting ready to make a big splash in this space. Hopefully the second time around will go smoother than the Grip's launch (or lack...

Motorola schedules event for July 28, multiple devices may be outed

Today Motorola has sent out invites for a special event it will hold on July 28. A past rumor said the new Moto G will be announced on that same day. This is unlikely to be a coincidence. Alongside the Moto G (2015), other new handsets could be outed too. For example, the Moto X (2015), and maybe even the new Droid-branded flagship for Verizon. Something called Moto X Sport might see the light of day as well, since it was referenced in one carrier leak from last week. If you look at the image above, it seems that Motorola 'signed' it "XOX. Moto", but on closer inspection it may actually be "XGX" - in which case it's clear that we should expect two Moto X models and a Moto G. This year's Moto G has been rumored to sport a 5-inch 720p touchscreen, a 13 MP rear camera, a 5 MP front-facing unit, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 410 SoC running the show (with a 1.4 GHz quad-core CPU), 1 or 2GB of RAM, 8 or 16GB of storage, and a 2,470 mAh battery. It should run Android 5.1 Lollipop from day...

Marshall's new smartphone is every audiophile's dream

If you have spent or have ever considered spending an embarrassingly large amounts of money on a perfect set oh headphones, than you have definitely acquainted yourself with Marshall Amplification and its impressive portfolio of pure audio awesomeness. The latest addition in the said lineup is a somewhat unexpected detour into the mobile market, but definitely looks cool and needless to say, should sound amazing. It is simply called London and on the surface appears to be nothing more than a tricked-out smartphone. However, Marshall has managed to design a unique music-centric phone not quite like any other we have seen and it really looks like every audiophile's dream. It is equipped with a dedicated Wolfson WM8281 Audio Hub, which delivers high quality decoding performance and sound quality, not to mention lossless audio support. The volume button has been swapped with a scroll wheel, for perfect precision when adjusting levels. London also has two front-facing speakers and even two separate stereo jacks. Marshall claims it "might just be the loudest mobile phone on Earth" but it is also quite flexible, as the two audio outputs have separate volume controls! And finally there is a dedicated "M-button" on top of the phone which can grant you instant one-click access to your music, regardless of the player. And speaking of software tricks, there is also a powerful system-wide equalizer, as well as a few bundled Audio apps to get you going, like DJ-APP and LoopStack. As for the rest of the phone's specs sheet, the other features are really not that impressive, but they aren't the main focus of the endeavor anyway. The Marshall London has a 4.7-inch IPS 720p screen and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 SoC. Memory is set at 2GB and 16GB of onboard storage, but, naturally, there is a micorSD card slot as well, seeing how FLAC audio piles up quick. The camera setup consists of an 8MP main shooter and a 2MP front-facing one. London is powered by a removable 2500 mAh battery and boots Android Lollipop 5.0.2. The asking price is 4,995 Swedish Krona, or about $585 - quite steep for the aforementioned specs, but still unique and thus surely desirable in the right circles. It is currently in pre-order state and is expected to start shipping no earlier than August 17. Thanks for the tip Jan...

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge Plus make a trip to the FCC

After all the leaks and elevated attention, at this point we are almost certain that the Galaxy Note 5 is indeed coming pretty soon, most probably on August 12. By all accounts, it is going to come along with another new device - the Galaxy S6 edge Plus - an odd beefier version of Samsung's current edged flagship. Today both smartphones got their FCC certifications, making them legal to sell within the US, which is another hint for nearing release. The certificates in question are issued for the Verizon versions of the Note 5 (SM-920V) and the Galaxy S6 edge Plus (SM-G928V), as well as their respective AT&T counterparts - SM-N920A and SM-G928A. We can only expect that T-Mobile and Sprint variants will follow shortly. As far as we currently know, the Note 5 will sport a 5.7-inch HD Super AMOLED display, will be powered by the new in-house Exynos 7422 SoC and have 4GB of RAM and a 16MP OIS camera. The Galaxy S6 edge Plus should be about the same in terms of size. It will, however, run on the slower Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC. Source 1 | Source 2 | Source 3 | Source 4 |...

Strange: Siri calls police when asked to charge phone

Looks like Apple's virtual assistant Siri has an interesting response to a certain command. When you ask it to "charge my phone 100 percent," the software instead begins calling emergency services. At the face of it, this may seem to be a bug, but it could also be a feature to secretly call the police in desperate situations, although it isn't officially mentioned anywhere. The behaviour is reproducible on iOS 8, but not in the public beta of iOS 9, suggesting it probably is a bug. Anyway, should you test this out at your end, make sure you cancel the call in the five-second window that Siri gives unless you want a cop at your door. Via 1 | Via...

Check out this beautiful Samsung Galaxy Note 5 360-degree render

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 crawled out of obscurity over the past few weeks and thanks to a couple of supposedly genuine renders, one coming from @onleaks, the other one courtesy of a casemaker, we now have a pretty complete picture of the upcoming top-shelf phablet. And while those renders may be right on the money, they stick to color schemes suitable for 3D modeling. It's nice then that a bunch of people have put in the effort to make a more true to life rendition of the Note 5, based on the first render, and post it online. So we have the successor to the Galaxy Note 4 presented in white attire, ready for a 360-degree spin. We enjoy the near bezelless look, but the array of sensors next to the earpiece draws way to much attention to itself, now that they're not mere circles, but actual contrasting cutouts. A dark colored Note 5 will mask them better probably, but then again it may not need to as they may end up being fewer and smaller if the casemaker's intel is more precise. The earpiece itself is perhaps a bit too fat as well, but that may also be subject to change. Now, we're more than a little skeptical that the task switcher capacitive button on the left will sit higher than the back button, as the designers will have you believe, but that's likely an oversight. Either way, we may get to see the actual device unveiled as soon as August 12, so stay tuned. Thanks to John for the...

OnePlus 2 confirmed to be dual SIM, have 50 times more inventory

Today brings a new piece in the seemingly endless OnePlus 2 puzzle - the phone will have two SIM cards and even-better, dual standby. The announcement was made by the company's CEO - Liu Zuohu, through weibo.com. A lot of people are looking forward to the OnePlus 2. And to avoid letdowns similar to its predecessor, the OnePlus team has also promised that it will have 50 time more inventory of the upcoming handset, compared to the OnePlus One. Unfortunately, there will once again be an invite system, but now upgraded with reservation lists and better post-purchase sharable invites. Besides, with the extended inventory getting an invite should be much easier this time around. To sum up what we currently know about the OnePlus 2 - it will most-likely have a metal build, a 3,300 mAh battery abd 4G LTE with support for more bands. 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM on a Snapdragon 810 SoC are confirmed as is the 13MP main camera. Last, but definitely not least, CEO Pete Lau has also promised that the phone will have a price tab below $450, hopefully it will come as close as possible to the $299 the OnePlus One originally retailed for. Gresso Regal case offers signature design for a fraction of the price

Gresso's products aren't exactly what you would call affordable, nor are they to everyone's taste. But, frankly, compared to most other "luxury" makeovers we have seen of the iPhone 6, like the ones from Legend or Goldgenie, Gresso's take does seem elegant and even stylish in its own way. However, if you find that $3000 to $5000 is a little steep for your taste, but still long for a Gresso makeover, then you're in luck. The Swiss company now offers a Regal Case that delivers mostly the same look and comes with the same choice of premium materials, as the Gresso iPhone. The case is handcrafted and comes in three varieties, quite typical for the manufacturer. The lower end T1 is titanium all around and will set you back $1000. The T2 and T3 variants, however, have and extra coating of PVD and a gold numbering plate on the back - white gold for the T2 and yellow for the T3. Both come at a price of $1500. The new product is also a "limited collection" with an engraved unique number form one to 999 on every unit. A curios fact is that the case is already available for the iPhone 6s, as well as the current iPhone 6. However, we sincerely doubt that Gresso has managed to get the inside track on Apple's eagerly-anticipated new phone and is merely betting that Apple won't change the design as we all expect.
