Google will be removing "OK Google" voice trigger on Chrome for desktop

If you know about it, you might be among the select few to actually miss Google's voice trigger on desktop, as the search giant has announced it will be removing it shortly. And if you are like most other Chrome users and are just learning that you can actually go to Google's home page and say "OK Google . cats wearing party hats", just like you would on an Android device, well then you probably inadvertently assisted the death of the feature. Don't get us wrong, we're not pointing any fingers here, but that is simply how Google operates - if something is deemed not popular enough, it is scrapped to make way for other projects. This is exactly the reasoning the US giant has stated for its intention to remove "OK Google" detection in the upcoming version 46 of its Chrome browser on Windows, OS X and Linux. This company policy is both a blessing and a curse, as it does aid toward decluttering the Google ecosystem and investing efforts into prospective ventures, but has also led to the demise of quite a few cool features, some of which still missed by fans, even around the our office (please bring back Google Reader.). On a less sobby note, the feature probably won't be missed all that much. It does require you to go to Google's home page to work, making it far less convenient that the likes of Microsoft Cortana or Google Now on your phone that could, potentially, be made to listen for your commands all the time. Plus, there have been rumors that the functionality will be migrated back into an extension for Chrome, which it actually started as and Google voice search will still work even without it, by simply pressing on the microphone button in the search field. In any case, anything that declutters and speeds-up Chrome, which has now transpired into its own overly-complicated application platform is a welcome sight in our...

Alcatel will be launching the OneTouch Flash in India on October 20

It is becoming increasingly hard to keep tabs on Alcatel with its ongoing policy of mass-announcing carrier-tailored phones and constantly switching up specs and mixing models. But, from time to time, the OEM does put out a few phones that stand out in the crowd. The OneTouch Flash 2 is a prime example. It was originally developer as a mid-range offer for a predominantly Asian market - Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore. But the interesting smartphone is now coming to India as well. The launch event will be held in a few days, on October 20 and invitations are already being distributed. Besides being a tantalizing mid-range offer, with a 5-inch 720p IPS touchscreen, an octa-core MediaTek's MT6753 chipset and 2GB of RAM, the OneTouch Flash is also marketed as a camera-centric device. It is equipped with a 13 MP Samsung ISOCELL rear camera with phase detection autofocus, f/2.0 aperture, and a dual-tone dual-LED flash, as well as a 5 MP selfie cam with LED flash on the front. The main camera promises focus times as quick as 0.3 seconds. Other specs include 16GB of onboard storage, expandable through microSD, dual-SIM functionality and LTE connectivity for both cards. The phone is powered by a 3,000 mAh battery and boots Android 5.1 Lollipop. The OneTouch Flash will be available exclusively on Flipkart in Volcanic Grey and Mica White color options. Pricing should be announced come October...

IBM agrees to give Chinese government access to product source code

IBM has agreed to give Chinese government access to source code of some of its software products, a move that'll help the company prove that there are no security risks associated with them. The access would be provided in a controlled and secure environment, IBM said, adding that they won't be sharing any client data with the Chinese government or providing 'back doors' to them. "Strict procedures are in place within these technology demonstration centers to ensure that no software source code is released, copied or altered in any way," the company said in a statement. This is not the first time a US tech company has agreed to turn over its product source code to the Chinese government for review - back in 2010, Microsoft shared the source code for Windows 7 and some other products with...

New Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL renders reveal a Windows 10 and an Android version

Despite keeping a low profile on end user markets, mobile veteran Alcatel is still around and has found its little niche and way of surviving in today's dog-eat-dog smartphone realm. The OEM's typical turf nowadays are low-end Android devices and lots of them, typically tailored and customized to meet carrier requirements and needs and then offered as subsidized offers. However, Alcatel appears to be trying to branch out into other more contemporary fronts, namely Windows 10. Back in September, we reported on an interesting Alcatel OneTouch device, leaked by one Evan Blass (@evleaks). Dubbed the Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL, it was described as the company's first go at a Windows 10 smartphone. After a long period of silence on the topic, a new set of renders has now surfaced of the alleged smartphone, courtesy of the same quite reputable source. What is perhaps most interesting about the new development is that the OneTouch Fierce XL is pictured in two distinct version - one running Windows 10 and the other one Android. The renders even suggest that there will be some physical differences between the two variants, namely the Windows logo home button on the former, as well as the other capacitive controls. At first glance, it appears they are missing from the Android unit, but they are there, just not lit-up and a bit differently marked. Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL for Windows (left) and Android (right). Both destined for T-Mobile USA. pic.twitter.com/bhHOIYiC2L— Evan Blass (@evleaks) October 17, 2015 As for the specs, @evleaks previously revealed that the handset will be powered by a Snapdragon 210 SoC (probably not powerful enough for Windows Continuum), and will sport a 5.5-inch 720p display. It will have 2GB RAM and 16GB expandable internal memory, and pack in a 2,500mAh battery. In terms of camera, the device will feature an 8MP rear unit and a 2MP front shooter. It is also said to support VoLTE. There was also mention of the US T-Mobile carrier as part of the leak, but we can't really be sure if that suggest the handset will be an exclusive offer. Also, as far as we currently know, it should be officially unveiled this...

Adobe issues fix for the recently identified critical Flash vulnerability

Just a couple of days after identifying a new critical Flash vulnerability that it said could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system, Adobe has issued a fix for it. The vulnerability in question affected the Adobe Flash software on all major operating systems including Windows, Macs, and Linux. On the first two, it affected Flash Player version 19.0.0.207 and earlier, while on the latter, it affected 11.2.202.535 and earlier 11.x versions. The company had also confirmed that an exploit for the vulnerability is being used in "limited, targeted attacks." The next iPhone might be powered by Intel chips

We, as consumers, often tend to view most any modern piece of tech as more or less a single piece of electronics, courtesy of its respective manufacturer. However, the reality of making a modern cell phone inevitably involves bringing together a vast amount of chips, materials and processes from an army of companies. Naturally, the same goes for Apple's iPhone and having the right internals can be just as crucial to its success as Cupertino's signature design and vision. Supplying the likes of Apple with the necessary chips to put out tens of millions of smartphones is no easy task and it is quite understandable that the US giant currently depends on both TSMC and Samsung to manufacture its A9 chips. Industry sources now suggest that Apple might be bringing yet another partner on board, perhaps even as an exclusive in the long run. An alleged deal has already been struck with Intel and a veritable task force of 1000 Intel employees might already be working on chips to power the next iPhone generation. A few theories are circulating as to how the partnership might play out and most agree that Apple is most likely interested in Intel's LTE modems, namely the 7360 LTE modem chip that CEO Brian Krzanich said would start showing up in devices next year. The most likely scenario seems to be an iPhone 7 with both the 7360 LTE modem and Qualcomm's 9X45 LTE chip for different markets. The chip in question actually comes courtesy of an Infineon facility in Germany that Intel bough out in 2011. Infineon was, in fact, the supplier of 3G modems for iPhones up until 2011, so, the historical foundation for the partnership is definitely there. Furthermore, it is important to note that Intel has mentioned its intention to add CDMA support to its modems on several occasion - an important feature that would allow Apple to cater to carrier like China Telecom, which uses a combination of LTE and CDMA on its networks. Other rumors suggest that the partnership might extend even further and that Intel will be tasked to produce a new custom SoC for Cupertino. The former hasn't really been big in mobile chipsets lately, but it does rely on a cutting-edge 14 nanometer production process. The aforementioned Samsung and TSMC have also managed to shrink things down to the same level, but are reportedly cutting corners by still making chip interfaces with a 20 nanometer process, whereas Intel's solution is 14 nanometers "from front to back". This might not sound like much, but could be an invaluable leverage for Apple, which will most likely be designing its custom chips in-house and taking full advantage of Intel's production capabilities. Cupertino has already proven its expertise in vertical integration, like with the powerful A9 chip, which has the M9 graphics chip on board. This new development will hopefully pave the way for integrating the phone's Ax processor and LTE model in the same package as well, effectively boosting overall performance and efficiency. There has also been talk of a possible new integrated solution for the next Apple Watch, which currently uses a far less efficient system-in-package solution. However, bear in mind that the above is still largely unconfirmed, so take it with a grain of salt at least until Apple or Intel spills the beans on the joint venture. Source |...

Chinese hackers suspected in Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution hack

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), a nonprofit research and higher education facility in the US that focuses on all aspects of marine science and engineering, has revealed that it has been a victim of a cyber-attack. While WHOI President and Director Mark Abbott revealed that hackers managed to gain access to the institute's data and email, its general counsel Christopher Land said that there's no proof yet that the stolen data has been misused. It's worth mentioning that WHOI also does a lot of classified work for the Defense Department. Land, however, said that data related to that work is safe. The hack was first discovered back in June this year, soon after which the institute hired cybersecurity firm Mandiant to carry on investigations, which are still on. Abbott also revealed that the evidence they've collected till now strongly suggests that this is the handiwork of Chinese hackers. The revelation comes in the wake of a recent announcement from Chinese President Xi Jinping that they intend to work with the US government to stop...

Verizon rolling out Samsung Pay support to compatible phones

When Verizon announced last week that it'll support Samsung Pay, it said that the payments service will be made available to compatible smartphones on its network through a "future software update." The good news is that the update the carrier was talking about has started rolling out. What's worth mentioning here is that unlike devices on other carriers, Verizon phones won't have the Samsung Pay app installed automatically after the update, meaning users will have to install the app once it's available in the Play Store. If you aren't in the know, Verizon phones that'll be receiving the update include the Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 edge, Note5, and S6 edge+. As for the banks, only American Express, Bank of America, Citi Bank, U.S. Bank, and Synchrony Financial currently support the mobile payments service. In addition to support for Samsung Pay, the aforementioned update also brings along fixes for the latest Stagefright...

Ex-Microsoft honcho Steve Ballmer is now Twitter's third largest individual shareholder

Steve Ballmer, who was the chief executive officer of Microsoft for a whopping 14 years, has bought a 4% stake in Twitter. This makes him the third largest individual shareholder in the micro-blogging company, owning more than its founder and CEO Jack Dorsey. Photo credit: Stephen Brashear/Getty Images The information was revealed by the man himself in a tweet, where he termed Twitter's new 'Moments' feature as innovation, and praised Dorsey's re-appointment as the company's new CEO. "Good job @twitter, @twittermoments innovation, @jack Ceo, leaner, more focused," the tweet read. "Glad I bought 4% past few months." Twitter's current market value stands at $21 billion, meaning Ballmer's stake is worth around $800 million. For those who aren't aware, according to Forbes, Ballmer is the world's 35th richest man with a net worth of $21.5 billion. This comes just days after Twitter announced that it will cut up to 336 jobs, which is around 8% of the company's total...

Six Sony devices will jump straight to Android 6.0 from Android 5.0

Sony has updated its support pages to indicate the fact that at least six of its devices will not be receiving updates to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Instead, these will jump from 5.0 straight to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The devices in question are the Xperia Z3+, Xperia Z4 Tablet, Xperia C4, Xperia C5 Ultra, Xperia M4 Aqua, and Xperia M5. The support pages for all of these now list Android 6.0 Marshmallow as the next version of the OS that they'll get, even though they're all still running 5.0. Given the fact that Marshmallow is already launched, this makes sense. If Sony were to work on the Android 5.1.1 update for these devices first, and only then start developing Marshmallow, you can imagine how late that would come out. Even so, you probably shouldn't expect any of them to taste Marshmallow this year. It's unclear why Sony hasn't already released updates to Android 5.1.1 for these smartphones and the Z4 Tablet, but now it's certain that it won't go this route at...

Huawei publishes list of devices getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow

If you own a Huawei device and are anxious to find out whether it will ever be updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, here's the official list straight from the Chinese company itself. One word of caution, however: this list is apparently valid for the devices released in China. So certain international versions of the products in it may not see the latest version of the OS. We sure hope that's not going to be the case, but you do need to keep this in mind. OK, without further ado, here are all the Huawei devices confirmed to taste Marshmallow: P8, Mate S, Ascend Mate7, P8max, Ascend G7, G7 Plus, G8, Honor 7, Honor 7i, Honor 6 Plus, Honor 6, MediaPad X2, Honor 4X, and Honor 4C. Of course, the list could conceivably grow in the future, as Huawei hasn't said these are the only devices to get Android 6.0. Huawei is currently working on the updates and the first ones may be out in November - then again these things are often delayed, so you probably shouldn't get your hopes up. Samsung Galaxy S7 tipped to come with a USB Type-C port

We're not expecting the Samsung Galaxy S7 until early next year, but rumors are already piling up. It's the chipset inside that entertains the most and whether it will be the Snapdragon 820, or a brand new Exynos, or a total of three options, remains to be seen. Taking a break from that topic, it has now been hinted that Samsung's 2016 flagship will come with a USB Type-C port. "Confirmed" is actually the wording used by the folks at SamMobile, citing "sources". It would be a logical turn of events as it's the way the industry is inevitably headed. Convenience of the reversible design aside, the Type-C standard (if accompanied by actual USB 3.1 support, unlike the OnePlus 2), promises even faster connection speeds and high-wattage power delivery, two-way too. After all, no fast wireless tech can beat a proper fast wired charger. In case you haven't been following, the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S6 has also been tipped to feature a Synaptics made ClearForce tech to rival Apple's 3D Touch. We're also expecting a new magnesium alloy for the body of next year's Korean model for improved strength/weight ratio. Competition is a good thing, we...

Intel's 'PC does what?' campaign goes live

Who'd have thought you'd see some of the top PC OEMs come together and promote the PC as a brand. But then, with falling sales and interest in the once popular personal computer space, companies are now tripping over each other to try and revive the segment again. The result is this, Intel's 'PC does what?' campaign, made in collaboration with Dell, HP, and Lenovo. The campaign focuses on showing you all the different things your PC can do, and they already have a bunch of videos for that. Most of these are somewhat cringe-inducing and clearly Intel is no Apple when it comes to showing features in a meaningful, relatable way and instead chose an over the top exaggerated ad campaign that people are less likely to respond to. But if you look past the absurdity, you might just see some actual, clever features. The company also has a website with a single page, and wants you to come back on October 19. Maybe we will see more then. You can see all the five videos in the playlist...

Similarly, once inside the Entertainment tab, you'll see shortcuts for Movies & TV, Music, Books, and Newsstand. Notably, the new header space at the top of the page will be used to focus on a particular app, game, movie, or other related stuff. Just a day after Motorola and Verizon sent out press invites for a joint event centred around "the newest Droids," the former has accidentally confirmed the existence of the Droid Maxx 2 smartphone. It's worth mentioning that Google had recently confirmed that the device will be Verizon's Moto X Play. Motorola yesterday launched a stock email client, dubbed Moto Email, on Google Play. Among the screenshots accompanying the app's Play Store listing was an image (shown above) where-in the sender's signature read, "Sent from my DROID MAXX 2." A quick look at the listing now reveals that the image in question has been removed. As multiple Droid-branded phones are to be announced at the October 27 event, we are also expecting the companies to unveil the Droid Turbo 2 (which also has an international variant dubbed the Moto X Force). Skype now lets non-users participate in conversations after clicking a unique link

Starting today, you can use Skype even if you don't have an account. The Microsoft-owned service announced a new feature that makes this possible. People who do have a Skype account can now start a conversation and then share a unique link to it. Each conversation gets its own link, and the people who are sent such a link (and click on it) can join it and chat even if they're not Skype users. This currently works for guests through Skype for Web on computers. The people inviting others to conversations through these links can do so from Skype for Windows, Skype for Mac, and Skype for Web. The functionality is currently limited to the US and UK. Guests can also join conversations from Skype for iPhone, iPad, and Android, but only if they already have an account. Skype says it's working hard to roll out this feature to the rest of the world too, and this should happen over the next two weeks. The ability to start a conversation and share a link to it from mobile devices is coming...

YouTube Gaming update lets you broadcast your mobile gameplay from Android

YouTube Gaming was announced as Google's answer to Twitch back in June, and it finally launched this August letting you live stream your gaming sessions to eager viewers everywhere. One thing you couldn't broadcast, however, were mobile games. Until now, that is. A new update for YouTube Gaming now allows for streaming of mobile gameplay, if you're on Android that is. You just use Mobile Capture on YouTube Gaming, and that's it - you don't need any additional hardware or software. After you tap on Go Live in the YouTube Gaming app, you can turn on your front-facing camera to record your commentary using your phone's microphone. This isn't the only new thing launching for YouTube Gaming, though. Sponsorships now let you support the people creating the live streams you love. This is in beta for "a small group of creators", who can receive monthly payments from fans in exchange for extra perks (such as a live chat badge chosen by the creator and access to exclusive chat sessions). The list of beta channels with this feature enabled will reportedly be expanded continuously. More improvements are in too. It's now easier to see when there are live streams for games in your collection, video bookmarking with Watch Later is simplified, performance has been improved, the YouTube Gaming homepage has been redesigned, and you can import existing YouTube subscriptions at any time through Settings. Finally, previous searches are remembered in the iOS app. The new YouTube Gaming app, featuring all of these enhancements, is available today in the Google Play Store for Android and the iTunes App Store for...

Microsoft Lumia 550 is up for pre-order in the EU, yours for €129.90

At its big event on October 6, Microsoft unveiled a pair of flagship smartphones as well as a more affordable handset. That latter model is the Lumia 550, and it's the one that should bring Windows 10 Mobile to the masses. It turns out it may start doing that in the very near future, since it's already up for pre-order in France. Amazon's local arm is listing the device in white and black, priced at €129.90. Unfortunately a shipping date isn't mentioned yet, but the retailer does say that the phone will be available soon. We assume the Lumia 550 will slowly be put up for pre-order in more European countries in the following days, and hopefully its release is actually near. The Microsoft Lumia 550 has a 4.7-inch 720p touchscreen, a 5 MP rear camera with LED flash, a 2 MP selfie shooter, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 chipset at the helm (with a 1.1 GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU), 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable storage, and a 2,100 mAh battery. Samsung Gear S2 is up for pre-order at Verizon, lands at T-Mobile next month

Samsung's first round smartwatch has been available in the US since the beginning of the month, if you prefer the model sans mobile data connectivity. If you're more inclined to get your wearables from a carrier, then this is for you. The mobile data-enabled version of the Gear S2 is now available for pre-order at Verizon. You need to shell out $299.99 for it if you don't mind signing a new two-year contract, or $349.99 without an activation. The watch will be in stores on November 6. Big Red offers the Gear S2 in silver and dark grey. On the other hand, T-Mobile will begin selling the smartwatch on November 15, in the same two colors. To purchase one, you either pay the $359.99 full price, or go for the magenta carrier's installment plan. Using this method, you shell out nothing upfront, then followed by 23 monthly payments of $15 and a final installment of $14.99. Source 1 • Source...

iPhone 6s sales slowing down, says analysts

Apple's latest pair of iPhones are doing pretty well, especially in the US - no surprises there, but the question is still out on how actual sales compare to the initial record-breaking 76 million units estimate. As usual, Cupertino has remained quiet on the matter and won't probably break the silence until it is ready to post its Q4 2015 financial results at the beginning of 2016. Naturally, that has left a lot of room for various analysts to weigh in on the matter and opinions are rather conflicting. On the one hand, we have Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty, who claims that the 6s is going even stronger than its predecessor. Her conclusions are mostly based on a survey of buying intention among smartphone customers, which shows a 10% year-over-year rise of the people who plan to buy a smartphone in the next twelve months. According to Katy, this, coupled with raising iPhone user loyalty, especially in the US and China is enough to conclude that Cupertino will exceed its Q4 estimates. On the flip side, however, we find Pacific Crest Securities analyst John Vinh, who claims that the 76 million unit sales by the end of Q4 2015 are way too overestimated and in reality will translate to 67 million. He also seems to base this analysis on some more concrete evidence, namely feedback from Asia chip suppliers that claim Apple has cut down its component orders by roughly 15% to adjust to lower market interest. In addition, a recent survey among carriers in West Europe and North America has shown that most of them are yet to deplete their iPhone 6s stocks. Regardless of what the actually sales figures reveal, we are not really concerned whether the iPhone is a profitable venture - that is a certainty. It is, however, interesting to see weather Apple's newest creation will manage to outshine its predecessor in terms of popularity, or is Cupertino starting to stall in its tracks. Source |...

Nexus 6P Canadian launch delayed by a week due to supply issues

The launch of the Huawei-made Nexus 6P smartphone in Canada has been delayed. While it was earlier supposed to go on sale in the country on October 26, the device is now expected to hit the shelves on November 2. An internal Bell note (shown above), which was accessed by Canadian tech blog MobileSyrup, reveals that the reason behind the move is "supply issues." While it isn't yet clear what exactly these issues are, going by the language of the note, it's safe to assume that the issues will affect other Canadian carries as well, although there's no official confirmation on the same. This comes just a few days after the smartphone was taken off from Google Play in Canada. Those who managed to place orders for the device prior to that are now being told that they will receive it between October 29 and November...

Unorthodox Windows 10 Mobile shown off in Japan

A number of makers - including Vaio! - showed off phones running Windows 10 Mobile at an even held by Microsoft Japan. Note that this was mostly a showcase of prototypes, not production-ready phones. And Vaio, Sony's former PC division, only showed off a non-working dummy, but it's still interesting to see it consider entering the smartphone market while its former parent considers leaving.
