Curved glass supply might limit Galaxy S6 edge availability

Availability of Samsung Galaxy S6 edge might be limited by supply of curved glass for the device's display. Samsung has partnered with Corning to create the dual curved display for its hot new flagship smartphone. Reportedly, Samsung planned to ship between 8 million and 8.5 million curved glass units in Q2 this year. However, low yield will prevent the Korean giant's supplier to ship more than 6.5 million units. Samsung is allegedly looking for new suppliers to address the issue. The dual curved glass of Samsung Galaxy S6 edge is made using 3D thermoforming. The material is heated to 800 degrees Celsius in order to be molded into its unique shape. The finished curved glass component isn't cheap either. It is said to cost around $25. It is hardly a surprise that Samsung is trying to increase the curved glass yield for Galaxy S6 edge. Since its introduction, the smartphone has gathered a great deal of attention - it won the "Best new handset award at MWC 2015. Source (in Chinese) |...

Meizu M1 Note will soon be launched internationally

Back in December Meizu first made the M1 Note official as its competitor of sorts to the highly successful Xiaomi Redmi Note (and other affordable phablets, of course). Then in January a new version with a different chipset got announced, but both of these have so far only been available in China. That's about to change soon, however. Meizu's official online store for international markets now has the banner image you can see below displayed when you visit it. So it's clear - the M1 Note will shortly be offered to international buyers as well. What's still a mystery though is which version will be sold outside of China, the one with the MediaTek MT6752 SoC or the one with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 at the helm. The former seems to have the edge when it comes to performance, because its CPU has eight Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.7 GHz, whereas the Snapdragon 615 comes with a processor that has four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5 GHz and the other four going up only to 1 GHz. Whatever happens in this regard, the rest of the specs are obviously going to stay the same. So you should expect the Meizu M1 Note to pack a 5.5-inch 1080p touchscreen, a 13 MP rear camera with dual-LED flash, a 5 MP selfie snapper, 2GB of RAM, 16 or 32GB of non-expandable storage, and a 3,140 mAh battery. The handset will run Meizu's Flyme OS 4.0, based on Android 4.4.4 KitKat. International pricing is unknown at the moment. In China the M1 Note starts at CNY 999 (that's $160), but we're expecting there to be a slight premium for other markets. Just how much that will be remains to be seen however. LG G Flex 2 arrives in the US at Sprint and in the UK

The LG G Flex 2 is now officially available to buy in both the US and the UK. Before today, the curved phone was up for grabs in LG's native South Korea, but now its international footprint has expanded. In the US you can only find it at Sprint for the moment, this being the first carrier to offer it. If you want to buy a G Flex 2 from Sprint you need to pay $199.99 if you get a new two-year contract. The other option is to use Sprint's installment plan, which means you pay $0 (plus tax) upfront, then followed by 24 monthly payments of $21. That all adds up to $504, in case you were wondering. Sprint has two color versions of the G Flex 2, Platinum Silver and Volcano Red. The latter is exclusive to the carrier. Across the pond in the UK, you can order an LG G Flex 2 from Carphone Warehouse, following a pretty long pre-order period. Over there the phone is only available in black right now. If you want to purchase one SIM-free, that will cost you £529.99. Otherwise, you can pick a 24-month contract from an operator and get the phone for free - for plans starting at £34.50 per month. That particular option is offered by Vodafone and it comes with 600 minutes, unlimited texts, and 1GB of 4G data each month. As always, there are many other choices to pick from. Samsung Galaxy S5 Plus gets Android 5.0 Lollipop too

You might have already forgotten all about the Galaxy S5 Plus, even the fact that it exists, but Samsung sure hasn't. The device is basically a cross between the 'normal' Galaxy S5 and the S5 LTE-A destined for South Korea. The latter model boasts a QHD touchscreen and a beefier Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chipset compared to the vanilla offering, and the S5 Plus pairs this SoC with the 1080p display in the Galaxy S5. It's been released in just a handful of countries around the world. Regardless however, Samsung chose not to forget about it when it comes to software updates. So the company has made the update to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop available for the Galaxy S5 Plus (model number SM-G901F). This might be the first Samsung rollout of version 5.0.2 of the OS, with the previous ones being either of 5.0 or 5.0.1. You're not likely to spot any feature differences between these though, as 5.0.1 and 5.0.2 are mainly about fixing bugs. Right now the update is out for devices bought in the Nordic region of Europe, and you can download and install it if you use Samsung's Kies desktop software. An over-the-air rollout should commence soon too. After applying the update, you'll be on build number...

HTC One M9 priced in Taiwan, sales start on March 16

Now that the HTC One M9 is finally official and the rumor mill on its looks and specs has shut down, one aspect that remains to be cleared is pricing. We've been hearing bits and pieces of information on that matter, starting with the figures in the UK, where it has been priced at £580 (or around $860), with a shipping date before March 31. The all-metal device has now apparently surfaced in Taiwanese listings, where it goes for the equivalent of $699. Reportedly, the smartphone will hit its native market on March 16, unsurprisingly ahead of both the UK and US. The American market will however be graced with a lower price. Local retailer B&H has put a $649 price tag on the One M9 and the flagship will be available for purchase starting March 25. Bear in mind that all the above prices are for the 32GB version, and word on the street is there might be a 64GB option, which will naturally command a higher...

Samsung patents a flexible smartphone made of discrete links

Flexibility has been a key focal point of innovation in the smartphone industry lately and it looks like things will continue in the same direction. Samsung has recently been granted a US patent for a flexible smartphone, targeted at active users. The concept relies on a set of discrete elements that will be able to move relative to one another thus forming a curvature. The links will be hinged in such a way, that both a convex and concave curvatures will be possible. Battery cells will also be distributed among multiple sections. One suggested use of the novel smartphone is flexing it, so the elements open up and then grab on to the user's clothing, thus eliminating the need for additional straps. The patented device is a logical extension to Samsung's ongoing work on flexible displays. Naturally though, a lot of time needs to pass from the patent to an actual device, so don't get your hopes up just yet. Meanwhile, fans of curves can find a compromise in the LG G Flex2, although that one is permanently curved and lacks the suggested outdoor functionality, instead focusing on looks. Source |...

Exclusive: Rugged Samsung B550 Xcover 3 leaks

Two days ago, Samsung revived the Xcover brand with a new smartphone - the Xcover 3. There are also rumors of an upcoming Galaxy S6 active model, as well, so the Korean giant seems to be paying a lot attention to the rugged market. Today brings another durable device rumor, but this time with a twist. As it turns out, Samsung might have plans to turn the Xcover 3 moniker into a whole line of devices, or at least two that is. A source, who chose to remain anonymous sent us info on an upcoming feature phone called Samsung B550 Xcover 3. The rumor is complete with specs, according to which the phone will be equipped with a 2.4-inch QVGA (240x320 pixels) display and powered by a SC7703A processors, along with 128MB RAM and another 128MB of storage. This is quite a blast from the past, indeed, but the phone will offer IP67 certification and looks about as durable as tech gets these days. Furthermore, the device boasts a 1,300 mAh battery, which, considering the other specs, should ensure a spectacular battery life, again, just like old times. Other specs on the Xcover 3 featurephone include a 3MP camera, microSD slot FM Radio and Bluetooth. The dual band (900/2100), HSDPA 7.2 handset should appear sometime during Q2 this year with a price tag of around €99. Any takers? Special thanks to our anonymous...

Apple outs iOS 8.3 public beta along with developer release

Apple has officially launched iOS 8.2 earlier this week, but the company hasn't stopped working on the next release of its mobile operating system either. We've already seen two beta versions of iOS 8.3 going out to developers, and today Apple made iOS 8.3 beta 3 available for them too. But along with this release comes something that has been rumored before, but never actually done by Apple so far - a public beta for iOS. Yes, the company is now letting non-developers try out the next iteration of iOS too. The Apple Seed website has been updated to include iOS 8.3 as a public beta. You first have to sign up, after which you can enroll in the iOS 8.3 beta. Keep in mind however that this is still rolling out, and a link to join the iOS program may not appear immediately for you. If that's the case, simply try again later. After you're in, you'll need to first backup your device to iTunes, then download a configuration profile from the Apple Seed website. This will allow the beta release to show up in Software update on your device. If at any point you want to go back to the previous stable release of iOS, you'll need to "first erase the beta software, then re-install the latest shipping version of iOS, and finally restore from your previously saved iTunes backup", according to Apple's notes. Once the final version of iOS 8.3 lands, you'll be able to update to that even if you're running the beta release, of course. As for what's new in this third iOS 8.3 beta, you should know that it comes with the Apple Watch app that is also part of the final release of iOS 8.2. Messages settings gets a new "Conversation list filtering" option, which adds tabs to the Messages app, separating your conversations with people who are in your address book from those with anyone else. Also, messages from unknown people now have a "Report junk" link, which apparently sends the message details to Apple for review. These seem to be the only new things for now, but as always iOS 8.3 beta 3 should also include a number of unnamed bug fixes and performance enhancements. Source 1 • Source...

LG G4 Note phablet now rumored to be in the works

Remember that top of the line LG smartphone that's supposed to launch in the second half of this year sporting higher-end specs than even the G4? It was hinted at by an LG exec earlier this month, though unfortunately no details about its specs were revealed. Now it turns out that this could be called G4 Note, and it's going to be a phablet. An extremely high-end one, that is, undoubtedly made to compete head-on with both the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and the successor to Apple's iPhone 6 Plus. This information reportedly comes from unnamed sources in LG's native South Korea. If it's true, the G4 Note would mark LG's return to the high-end phablet market. The company did release the Optimus G Pro in 2013 and the G Pro 2 last year, but then gave up on this space because sales of those two devices had cannibalized its other flagships. It remains to be seen whether it will somehow manage to prevent that from happening once more with the G4 Note and G4 (allegedly pictured in the leaked render attached to this article). On the other hand, the different release time frame might help, with the G4 coming in the first half of the year and the G4 Note in the second - emulating Samsung's model of releasing the Galaxy S flagship in spring and the Note in the fall. LG is confident that the G4 and G4 Note will help it reach the No.3 position in the global smartphone sales rankings. In fact, it apparently expects to sell 10 million G4 units this year, compared to just 7 million G3 devices it moved in 2014. Image source • Source |...

Verizon releases Sapphire Blue Ballistic Nylon Droid Turbo

Today Verizon has unveiled a new color variation for the Motorola Droid Turbo. This smartphone, like all Droid-branded devices before it, will only work on Verizon's network. It's also Motorola's current flagship smartphone on Big Red, being tied in terms of specs with the Nexus 6, which Verizon has started selling today. The Droid Turbo is smaller though, which should make it a better fit for most people. And if the colors that were previously on offer didn't entice you to buy one, perhaps the new option will. It's called "Sapphire Blue Ballistic Nylon", because two-word commercial names for colors are old fashioned now it seems. A mere mortal may just call it "blue", but that's not its official moniker. Anyway, on the inside you're looking at the exact same handset as before, nothing has changed except the hue. The blue model is available now in stores and online for $199.99 with a new two-year contract, or $599.99 sans long-term agreement. Alternatively, you can also use the company's Edge installment plan, in which case you shell out nothing upfront, then followed by 24 monthly payments of $24.99. The Droid Turbo features a 5.2-inch 2,560x1,440 Super AMOLED touchscreen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 SoC with a 2.7 GHz quad-core CPU, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of non-expandable storage, a 21 MP rear camera with dual-LED flash, a 2 MP front-facing camera, and a 3,900 mAh...

Huawei's upcoming Kirin SoC's surface with possible specs

Huawei's own chipset line - Kirin has never really been trendy or widely-discussed. Unlike Qualcomm's and Intel's chips it does not have proprietary graphics and instead relies on ARM technology which often lagged behind in performance. This might change very soon as the Chines tech giant is apparently preparing a major upgrade to its lineup, featuring three new upcoming SoCs - Kirin 930, 940 and 950. An alleged specs sheet for the future chips has slipped through the cracks and they do look mighty impressive. And before you say to yourself, "Well that sounds awesome for the new Huawei MediaPad or the P9 which I am not really interested in that much", consider this. Huawei will, most-likely, be a manufacturer of choice for the next Nexus device, so the capabilities of Kirin chips might turn out to be more important than you think. This is the one we are probably most familiar with, as we already know it will be powering the upcoming Huawei MediaPad X2 and the Huawei P8. It comes equipped with four Cortex A53 cores plus another four A57 ones, with a max clock of 2GHz. The GPU is an ARM Mali T628, which may not be the most powerful on the market but still offers plenty of oomph. The SoC supports up to 32MP sensors and offers 1080p video encoding. A very important feature that the Kirin line will get is the always-on dedicated sensor coprocessor. In the Kirin 930, it is dubbed the i3 and it is going to be replaced by an upgraded i5 model (not to be confused with the Intel processor though). This should allow for continuous measurements as well as better connectivity and security. The Kirin 940 will be a major improvement over the 930. It replaces the A57 cores, with the even more capable A72, throws in LPDDR4 memory support, DUAL ISP with 4K video encoding, as well as the Mali T860 for admirable graphic performance and many, many more other improvements. The Kirin 950 will only bring small tweaks to its predecessor. It will come with a beefed-up camera support (up to 42MP DUAL ISP), Cat. 10 LTE and a Mali T880 GPU. If rumors are to be believed, we should be seeing the all three chips this year, in Q2, Q3 and Q4,...

LG G4 renders, cases confirm slightly curved screen

The LG G4 rumors are heating up in the rumor mill with suggestions that it will adopt a slight curve, similar to the LG G Flex2. Leaked renders of the device and now cases for it confirm that the LG G4 will indeed have a slightly curved screen, similar to the LG Magna and Spirit we saw at the MWC and not nearly as curved as the G Flex2. The cases are even on sale at a Chinese retailer site. Unfortuanately there are no product dimensions to confirm the rumored size of the LG G4, 148.9 x 76.5 x 9.9mm. Leaked render • LG G4 cases Specs are unconfirmed, but allegedly the new phone will add a fingerprint reader on the back, specifically on the Power key. A stylus may make a surprise appearance too. The exact screen size is unknown but is should be between 5.3" and 5.7' (both the LG G3 and G Flex2 are 5.5") and it should have 1,440 x 2,560px or 1,620 x 2,880px resolution. The camera should get an upgrade to 16MP or 20MP, while the chipset is expected to be a Snapdragon 810. Source 1 (in Chinese) • Source...

ZTE Nubia Z9 hardware revealed, S810 inside

The follow-up to the ZTE Nubia Z7 flagship of last year has been showing up in supposed live images recently, though with some disconcerting differences. The final looks of the Nubia Z9 aren't officially known yet, but we appear to have obtained the specs, courtesy of an Antutu database entry. The popular benchmark's site lists the device with an internal designation NX510J to pack the mighty Snapdragon 810 chipset, expected to be found in each and every flagship this year except the Samsung Galaxy S6 / S6 edge. Operating memory is solid 3GB and internal storage is quoted at 32GB, both befitting the high-end aspirations of the smartphone. What's not up to 2015 flagship standards though, is the score of just shy of 47K, which is very much a last year figure. Interestingly, we witness a decrease in both screen size and resolution, compared to the previous installment. The Nubia Z9 is reported to feature a 5.2-inch FullHD display, as opposed the 5.5-inch QHD panel in the old generation. Other than that, the Antutu entry reveals a rather capable camera equipment, at least on paper. The main unit on the back employs a 16MP sensor, while the selfie-loving crowd will be pleased to find an 8MP front snapper. The rest of the hardware, as well as the smartphone's final appearance, remains to be disclosed, and that's expected to happen on March 26 at a dedicated ZTE press event. Source |...

Microsoft Lumia 640 XL is up for preorder in Germany

As most of you surely remember, Microsoft announced two new Lumia devices at this year's MWC venue. The smaller Lumia 640 has been available for preorder for a week now in Germany, France, and the UK. Today the Lumia 640 XL has also popped up in an online listing and is available for preorder. Bear in mind, that while the former can be found on the official Microsoft device store, the Lumia 640 XL has made an appearance on Amazon Germany, but the offer looks legitimate enough. The smartphone is priced at €219, which is quite reasonable, considering the Lumia 640 goes for about €160. Interestingly enough, the very same listing also features the smaller Lumia 640 model, in both 3G and LTE variant and the prices do match up with what we have seen so far, so it looks like the real deal. The Microsoft Lumia 640 XL comes with a 5.7" HD IPS screen with ClearBlack technology and a 13MP camera with Zeiss f/2.0 lens and 5MP selfie camera, both of which can do 1080p video. It is powered, by a rather dated Snapdragon 400 SoC, that includes a 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex-A7, 1GB of RAM and Adreno 305 GPU and has a 3,000 mAh battery. Source |...

New brown color for Samsung Galaxy S6 outed in UK

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S6 duo in three common colors, plus a unique color for each. Now, however, we learn that the Samsung Galaxy S6 might be getting a second unique color option, at least in the UK. It's not quite official yet, but a Brown color may soon join the current Gold Platinum option. Samsung UK's web site lists the Galaxy S6 in five colors, instead of the official four. The fifth option cannot be clicked and disappears if you navigate away from the specific page in the source link. There isn't even an image of the device in Brown. So, publishing the Brown color option was certainly a mistake. Its existence might be for real though. There's no trace of it on other local Samsung sites, suggesting it may be a UK carrier exclusive. The Galaxy S6 edge does not have a fifth color either, at least not yet. The Samsung Galaxy S6 and its S6 edge sibling are already on pre-order in the UK starting at £550. Source |...

The VAIO Phone is now official, costs $420 in Japan

VAIO Corporation, now 95-percent owned by Japan Industrial Partners, just unveiled its first foray into the smartphone market. Following an industry trend of naming simplicity in recent months, the device is plainly called the VAIO Phone. The handset is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, presumably within a Snapdragon 410 chipset. 2GB of RAM should offer adequate multitasking capabilities, while the 16GB of built-in storage can be expanded via microSD. The VAIO Phone sports a 5-inch IPS display of 720p resolution, and a rather common nowadays 13MP/5MP camera combo. Battery capacity is 2,500mAh, fitted in a body measuring 141.5 x 71.3 x 7.95mm and weighing 130g. Observant users have pointed out that the VAIO Phone is not unlike the Panasonic Eluga U2, but with the notable distinction that the Panasonic screen is FullHD. The smartphone boots Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, without much VAIO customizations. The Phone will set you back JPY3,000 upfront ($25 more or less), and JPY2,000 for 24 months, for a total of JPY51,000 ($420). Unlimited data plan is JPY1,980 a month on top of that. Source |...

Apple Watch competitors get removed from company stores

Apple stopped offering a number of fitness bands from its retail stores. The move is interpreted as clearing the way for the soon to be available Apple Watch (the wearable will begin shipping on April 24). Popular fitness bands such as the Nike FuelBand and Jawbone Up are no longer available to purchase in Apple's major retail locations. The company has also notified other fitness tracker manufacturers that it will no longer offer their products going forward. Of course, Apple has not commented officially on the matter. However, the company pointed that it regularly changes its merchandise lineup. The Apple Watch marks an entry for the company into a brand new market segment. Therefore, it is hardly a surprise that Cupertino is trying to give its new device a sales edge, especially considering the huge focus on health and fitness Apple Watch carries. The company is initially expected to ship three million units of its new creation. Source...

LG Nexus 5 is no longer available from Google

LG Nexus 5 is no longer available to purchase from Google. Google's 2013 flagship smartphone is not available in the brand new online store, which debuted alongside the second generation Chromebook Pixel. This means that going forward, users who are interested in a Pure Google smartphone will have to opt for the more expensive Motorola Nexus 6. The phablet is available for purchase in the new store, though the 64GB model takes 2-3 weeks to ship as opposed to 1-2 business days for the 32GB version. The disappearance of LG Nexus 5 should hardly catch anyone by surprise. In December last year, a word got out that LG has stopped production of the device. Google subsequently confirmed that the smartphone will be available through Q1 this year. Source...

Full specs leak for upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 Active

The yet-unannounced Samsung Galaxy S6 Active has been in the news a lot over the past few days. First we discovered that its model number would be SM-G890 and that AT&T will sell it at some point. And yesterday we apparently stumbled upon its screen size - 5.5". Now though a new rumor has surfaced claiming to give us the full spec list for the S6 Active. And to start with, it contradicts that previous finding about display size, saying it will sport a 5.1-inch QHD (2,560x1,440) panel as the 'vanilla' Galaxy S6. Moving on, we should also expect the successor to the Galaxy S5 Active (pictured above) to feature all of the other hardware innards of its non-rugged siblings, the S6 and S6 edge. So the same Samsung Exynos 7420 SoC, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, 16MP rear camera, and 5MP front snapper. The one thing that will reportedly change is battery capacity, rumored to come in at a whopping 3,500 mAh. That's more than what's inside the Galaxy Note 4 phablet, so we're a little wary of this particular detail - but hoping it will turn out to be right in the end. The added ruggedness of the Active handset, coupled with the bigger battery has led to an increase in size compared to the Galaxy S6. The S6 Active will measure 146.9 x 73.6 x 8.8 mm, as opposed to 143.4 x 70.5 x 6.8 mm for the S6. What isn't clear yet is if the S6 Active will come with a microSD card slot and a removable battery, unlike the S6 and S6 edge. Though since it's identical in every other respect, you probably shouldn't hold your breath. No detail has been revealed about how rugged it will be, but these things should surface soon now that the leaks have started in earnest. Today's rumor also confirms that AT&T will sell the Galaxy S6 Active, and that the model number of the device for that carrier will indeed be SM-G890A. The other versions should therefore be SM-G890x, with the final letter being different depending on region and/or...

Motorola's Moto G 4G (2015) makes it to the UK

Motorola's latest iteration of its Moto G smartphone is now officially up for grabs in the UK. We're talking about the Moto G 4G (2015), the successor to the original Moto G 4G from last year. Like the new 3G-only Moto G, the 2015 model with 4G support comes with a 5-inch 720p touchscreen, bigger than the 4.5-inch panel in the first models. The Moto G 4G (2015) also has an 8 MP rear camera with LED flash, a 2 MP selfie shooter, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a microSD card slot, and a 2,390 mAh battery. It's powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 400 chipset, coming with a 1.2 GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU and Adreno 305 GPU. The phone runs Android 5.0 Lollipop. It can be yours right now for £159.99 if you buy it from Motorola's UK arm. That's just a £10 markup from the 3G-only model, which goes for £149.99. Prices include VAT as well as standard shipping. HTC Desire 820s with MediaTek SoC hits Indian shops

In November 2014 HTC unveiled the Desire 820s, a variation of the original Desire 820. So far the 820s has been on offer in China, but starting tomorrow you'll see it in phone shops across India too. The Desire 820s has a MediaTek chipset, compared to the Qualcomm Snapdragon in the 'vanilla' 820. Because of this, it has a different CPU and GPU, of course. On the processor side, we're looking at an octa-core part with Cortex-A53 cores, clocked at 1.7 GHz. That should make the Desire 820s faster than the Desire 820, which had four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5 GHz, and another four clocked at 1 GHz. The GPU in the new phone is the Mali-T760, and (obviously) not Qualcomm's Adreno anymore. That's about it in terms of differences between the two. The Desire 820s has dual-SIM support, and it will work in India on 4G networks. It has a 5.5-inch 720p touchscreen, a 13 MP rear camera with LED flash, an 8 MP front snapper for selfies, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in storage (which is expandable via microSD), and a 2,600 mAh battery. It runs Android 4.4 KitKat with HTC's Sense 6 UI on top. It will be available in India tomorrow for INR 24,490, which is about $390 or €370 at the current exchange rates. Source |...

Verizon finally makes the Nexus 6 official, will be out tomorrow

After many rumors and leaks on the matter, today Verizon has finally decided to confirm that it will in fact sell the Motorola Nexus 6. What's more, the handset will become available tomorrow, so there's not a lot of waiting you need to do from this point on, if you crave a Nexus 6 but want to buy it from Verizon for some reason. The exact release date was in fact leaked just a few days ago, but it's good to (finally) have official confirmation too. The Nexus 6 will arrive at Verizon running Android 5.1 Lollipop, which was announced by Google yesterday. It will be out online tomorrow, while in stores it will be in stock starting on March 19. To get a Nexus 6 from Verizon with a two-year contract, you'll have to pay $249.99. Of course you can also use Big Red's Edge installment plan, in which case you pay nothing for the device upfront, then followed by 24 monthly payments of $27.08. The carrier is throwing in six months of free Google Play Music All Access, which normally costs $9.99 per month, if you buy a Nexus 6 until the end of...

Samsung Galaxy Win 2 becomes official in Brazil

The original Samsung Galaxy Win is almost two years old at this point, so the Korean company thought it would be a great idea to unveil a successor for it. So it did just that. The Galaxy Win 2 was officially announced in Brazil, where it was also the star of some hands-on pictures. The new device updates the Android version on board to 4.4.4 KitKat, but it makes the screen size smaller - now just 4.5", compared to 4.7" in the original. The resolution has stayed the same 800x480 though. The Samsung Galaxy Win 2 also boasts a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, a 5 MP rear camera with LED flash, a 2 MP front snapper, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage (expandable via microSD), and a 2,000 mAh battery. It comes with 4G LTE support, dual-SIM functionality, as well as the usual connectivity options. Its dimensions are 131 x 68.1 x 8.8 mm, and it weighs 130g. Samsung Galaxy Win 2 So it looks like the main upgrades here (aside from the software) are the 4G capability and the front-facing camera, now featuring 2 MP resolution, up from VGA on the Galaxy Win from 2013. In fact, Samsung has actually emphasized this during the launch event, saying that selfies are becoming extremely popular in Brazil, and the new camera should allow people to shoot them better. The Galaxy Win 2 is already up for grabs in Brazil in black and grey. Recommended prices are BRL 729 ($233) for the version without digital TV, and BRL 779 ($249) for the one that does have that feature. Thanks for the tip, Matheus! Source (in...

Android Lollipop update for Galaxy S5 and S4 put on hold

Samsung, like most major mobile players, has been keeping busy with the whole Lollipop update frenzy. Naturally, various delays and hiccups are expected, especially across devices in different regions. Samsung Norway, might have gotten into more trouble than usual with its update packages for Galaxy S5 and S4. Android 5.0 Lollipop was being seeded to both devices, as planned, until some major issues forced the local Samsung branch to put the OTA "on-hold". This was absolutely necessary after a number of owners of the aforementioned handsets flooded the local branch with complains about the Android 5.0 update they were receiving. There have been reports of various bugs, including random freezes of various apps, including the default Phone and Contact applications, often rendering the phone unusable. Crashes are also affecting the alarm application, which, as you can imagine, could be equally irritating. The OTA seems to be causing sluggish behavior in general, so definitely something went wrong in Norway. This is what the local branch had to comment on the matter: We are aware of the issues some users are experiencing after installing the update Android 5.0 Lollipop and now has stopped the current version. We work full time with a new update that contains solutions to the problems that have been reported to us, including a new solution for silent mode. We hope to send out the update shortly, and will keep you updated on Facebook. The reasons behind the troublesome update could be numerous, ranging from a mix-up in the shipped package, all the way to some latent bug that has been hidden away in the ROMs and is now causing unexpected problems. It is at least encouraging to know that Samsung Norway is aware of the issue and trying to address it. And we are not exactly sure that throwing in a silent mode feature will compensate for lack of a normally functioning device, but hey, as they say, you gain some, you lose...

Apple to ship 3M Watches in the initial batch

The Apple Watch sure polarized opinions upon its launch a couple of days ago at the company's Spring forward event. What's become the center of controversy is mainly the product's pricing, as design and functionality were already revealed last year. Meanwhile, details have surfaced regarding the Apple Watch production and supply. The company is reported to be planning a 3-million initial shipment, which comes as a more conservative figure, compared to the previously mentioned 5 to 6 millions. Even so, chief manufacturer Quanta is running into workers shortage and is allegedly hiring by the thousands. Long-time Apple partner Foxconn is also reported to be joining in the Watch production, although the company's precise role is unclear. Its involvement isn't surprising though, when you have in mind that the initial batch of the Apple Watch is on par with the combined number of smartwatches shipped by the top four manufacturers in the entire year 2014. Citibank: Samsung to ship 46 million Galaxy S6 units this year

Samsung is pushing its factories to meet the unexpectedly high demand for Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. It will produce 13 million units instead of 12 million (as initially planned) in the March-April period. Analyst Henry H Kim from Citibank has revised his estimate of the total number of Galaxy S6 devices to be shipped this year. The initial prediction was for 38 million Galaxy S6 and S6 edge phones total, this has since been bumped up considerably to 46 million. The bank still expects Samsung's profits for this quarter to drop slightly (1%) due to seasonality (things like the Chinese New Year), but for the second quarter of this year the forecast is for a 39% jump in quarterly profits. The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge will contribute to that, but the analysts sees the increased popularity of the Galaxy brand to benefit mid-range and even low-end models. All of this will have a positive impact on Samsung's component business as well. Source |...

The rugged gadget offers physical control keys below its display and there is an additional Xcover key, which lights up the LED flash on a short press, or fires up the camera with a double click. Samsung Galaxy S6 and Note 4 tied for best smartphone display

During its MWC presentation this year Samsung put a huge emphasis on the exquisite display unit in its latest Galaxy S6 flagship. And, as it turns out, this is more than just a promotional stunt, the new Galaxy has a gorgeous QHD Super AMOLED panel, which might just turn out to be the industry's best. But there is also another contender - the Galaxy Note 4. Both phones were sent to DisplayMate for testing and they are having a hard time crowning a definitive winner among the two. Both the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge made it to the company's testing grounds and were put through rigorous tests. Although the phones differ in form factor, their display units are identical - 5.1-inch panel, with a QHD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and a ppi rating of 577. The only difference is the slight curve in one of the models, so both were tested just in case. It turns out that the panel in the Galaxy Note 4 and the S6 are very close in terms of overall performance. Even though the screen on the new Samsung flagship has been scaled down in size by about 20% compared to the Note 4, it has maintained its amazing picture quality and is battling the phablet for the "Best Performing Smartphone Display" title. Here is what DisplayMate had to say on the matter: The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 4 are neck-and-neck record holders for display performance, effectively tied or alternating between first and second place in almost all categories except screen size for the much larger Galaxy Note 4, and the much higher pixels per inch for the Galaxy S6. What is especially impressive is that the overall display specs and performance of the Galaxy S6 have been maintained or improved after being scaled down by 20 percent in area from Galaxy Note 4. So. The Galaxy S6 matches the Galaxy Note 4 in overall display excellence and record performance and joins it as the Best Performing Smartphone Display that we have ever tested. As it turns out, Samsung has a lot to boast about its current device lineup. Naturally, the best in class title wouldn't be complete without a shootout with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, which currently hold the title "Best Mobile LCD Displays" and according to DisplayMate, Samsung leaves both of them in the dust as well. We recently evaluated and rated the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus as the current Best Mobile LCD Displays, while the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 4 are the current Best Mobile OLED Displays. All are impressive and excellent displays with great state-of-the-art display technology. However, OLED displays have been advancing at a relentless and fast pace with a constant series of systematic and strategic improvements, while LCDs have been coasting on their laurels for years. So although OLEDs started from behind in 2010 they have now pulled ahead on performance and innovation based on the Lab test and measurement results reported here. To get back in the game and become more competitive, LCDs will need to adopt Quantum Dots and Dynamic Color Management. The Galaxy S6 has more than double the resolution and more than 4 times the number of pixels as the iPhone 6. It also has significantly higher peak Brightness, significantly higher Contrast Ratio in both low and high Ambient Light, significantly higher Absolute Color Accuracy, significantly better Viewing Angel performance, and has 4 selectable screen modes instead of a single fixed one on the iPhones. The incredibly thorough and detailed test documentation, results and final verdicts can be found at the source link, along with quite comprehensive comparison tables. So you can really dig deep into the question. But one thing is for sure, Mr. JK Shin was definitely not lying when he said that the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are "the most advanced smartphones in the world". At least for now, that is.
