OnePlus 2 launch app is now available to download ahead of Monday's event

After weeks and weeks of building hype, OnePlus is finally ready to fully out its next smartphone this coming Monday, on July 27. And in anticipation of its big event on that date, the Chinese company has now released its official launch app for the OnePlus 2 in the Google Play Store. You'll need this app if you want to watch the unveiling, whether you'll go for the virtual reality version or not. If you do want to enjoy the OnePlus 2 reveal in VR, as its maker intended, then you hopefully have ordered (and already received) the Cardboard VR headset given out by the company. If not, then you can use a Cardboard headset made by anyone else, if you have one of course. Otherwise, you'll need to stick to the non-VR version of the event, but that too will only be available in the OnePlus 2 launch app if you want to watch live. OnePlus has promised it will upload the entire thing to YouTube after the announcement is over, but if you simply can't wait for that you should be prepared by having this app installed on your current Android device. In case you're wondering, OnePlus hasn't planned similar apps for iOS, Windows Phone, or BlackBerry. Thanks for the tip, Jono...

Twitter starts cracking down on tweet thieves, deletes stolen tweets

Twitter has had a problem of stolen content since pretty much its inception. More often than not, that funny tweet you read was stolen from someone else, which was stolen from someone else, which was probably stolen from someone else. So far there didn't seem to be much users could do about this problem, and not much Twitter was doing about it either. But now Twitter has started cracking down on stolen content, either automatically or based on registered DMCA takedown complaint by the owner of the original tweet. It's unclear how Twitter verifies the original tweet was indeed original and wasn't just lifted off from elsewhere outside Twitter. Stolen tweets won't simply disappear but will show the message 'This tweet from has been withheld in response to a report from the copyright holder.' This is a good move by Twitter because anyone who regularly uses the service knows tweet stealing is a major issue on the site. There are several accounts with several thousand followers that run exclusively on content stolen from other Twitter users or other sites. With this feature in effect it will be easier for users to ensure someone else isn't benefiting from their...

Xiaomi Mi4 64GB now with a permanent price cut in India

Just yesterday, Xiaomi put out a great offer for the 64GB variant of the Mi4. The handset was available for INR 17,999, down from INR 19,999, or about $31 less. This was part of the company's birthday celebration - marking one year since it entered the India market. It appears the 24 hour Flipkart sale was a smashing success, so today Xiaomi has decided to extend the deal indefinitely. The 64 GB Mi4 now has a regular price of INR 17,999 or about $280 of Flipkart and we expect other retailers to follow shortly and lower their prices as well. Also, the 32GB Mi4 should go on sale on Flipkart as well, starting July 28. It will retail for just INR 14,999 (about $235) - an even more budget-friendly offer. Considering its new price tag, the Xiaomi Mi4 surely offers a lot of smartphone for the money. It features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, 3GB of RAM, 5-inch 1080p display, 13MP main camera, and 8MP front-facing unit. For an in-depth analysis of the Mi4, check out our review. Xiaomi India has promised that more tantalizing promotions will come before July 28, so we will be sure to keep a close eye on things and update you on any good deals. Leaked images tease new 'Made for Bond' Sony Xperia smartphone

A couple of images have leaked online indicating that the upcoming movie Spectre will see James Bond using a yet-to-be-announced Sony Xperia smartphone. As you can see in the images above, the device - dubbed Xperia *5, with the letter before 5 blurred out - is being marketed as Made for Bond. There's little doubt that the handset in question will be a flagship, and speculations are rife that it could be the Xperia Z5, given that the company's last flagship smartphone was the Xperia Z4 (a.k.a. Xperia Z3+). However, keep in mind that these are mere speculations. Anyway, recent leaks have suggested that the Xperia Z5 will be unveiled in September this year. It is said to be powered by the yet-to-be-released Snapdragon 820 chipset, come with 4GB RAM, pack in a 4,500mAh battery, and feature a fingerprint recognition system. In terms of camera, it is rumoured to sport a 21MP Sony Exmor RS IMX230 CMOS sensor, with 4K video recording support and HDR capabilities. Spectre, meanwhile, is set for release in the US on November 6. Via 1 | Via 2...

LG G Pad 2 said to be powered by SD-805 SoC, coming this October

The specifications of the LG G Pad 2 have been leaked, thanks to known leakster Leaksfly, who posted the details on his Weibo page yesterday. According to the leak, the device will be powered by a Snapdragon 805 chipset with quad-core CPU and Adreno 420 GPU, and sport an 8.3-inch display with 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution. Going by the screen size, this could well be the sequel to the G Pad 8.3 (shown in the image above), which was released back in October 2013. Moving on, the tablet will come with 3GB RAM and 32GB expandable internal memory. In terms of camera, it will feature an 8MP rear unit and a 5MP front shooter. The device will run Android 5.1 Lollipop out-of-the-box. Leaksfly also said that the G Pad 2 will be released in October. There was, however, no word on its pricing, as well as the markets where it will be released. Needless to say, none of this has been officially confirmed, so take it with a pinch of...

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will have 4GB of RAM, benchmark reveals

As we get closer to the Samsung Galaxy Note 5's rumored launch date of August 13, more and more details about it are starting to surface. Just recently we saw it smiling for the camera in some live images, and we've had our fair share of renders originating at case makers too. Now through a benchmark run it's been revealed that at least one version of the phone will come with 4GB of RAM. The Samsung SM-N920V was put through the paces of Geekbench, and it was caught with that amount of memory on board. This is going to be Verizon's version of the top of the line smartphone. For now it's unclear if different carrier iterations will get different amounts of RAM. The benchmark also reveals that the board used is "7420", which could imply that the Note 5 will sport the same chipset as the Galaxy S6 duo, namely Samsung's own Exynos 7420. However, the upcoming phablet has so far been rumored to come with the Exynos 7422, a similar solution to the 7420, but one that has the modem on the same chip. Keep in mind that the board for both may simply be called the same, so this might still happen. Finally, Geekbench tells us that current Note 5 prototypes are running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, which is no surprise really, since this is the latest version of Google's operating system at the moment. Motorola Moto G (3rd Gen) handled before announcement

Almost 5 full days left before the scheduled official announcement on July 28, a working Motorola Moto G (3rd gen) unit has fallen into the hands of reviewers, keen to share a first glimpse of the smartphone. Away from the dim surroundings, typical of such pre-release hands-on occasions, this year's Moto G is the star of a proper photoshoot. The initial impressions are of a high-quality device, and the guys from Laptopmedia go so far as to say it has a superior build to contemporary flagships. Now we're not sure if that's the excitement of being the first to publish live images speaking, or indeed the case, but we'd be happy to see better materials and craftsmanship in a device, reportedly costing $245. That said, the predecessor launched at about $180, so for the premium the new generation commands, a bump in quality is warranted. Motorola Moto G (3rd gen) hands-on photos There's still no additional info on the specs of the device, which have so far remained unclear despite the nearing launch. It will be powered by either a Snapdragon 410 or a 610, RAM is pegged to be either a single gig like the previous models, or finally bumped to 2GB. There used to be a general consensus around a 5-inch 720p display until most recently word got out that it may be a FullHD panel after all. Imaging department is so far causing less debates and apparently a 13MP primary camera will be joined by a 5MP front shooter. And while the specs are obviously final, now that even review units have been handed out, we're yet to see the actual numbers set in stone. Perhaps, we'll need to wait for that New York event on the 28th to find...

Second-gen Android One smartphone likely to be unveiled next week

LG unveils the Tone Active, a Bluetooth headset that will be exclusive to AT&T

The LG Tone Infinim is certainly the most well known member of the Korean company's line of Bluetooth headsets, but there are many more. And today the newest addition to this roster was announced - the LG Tone Active. Like its name implies, this is an accessory designed to be used while running, biking, or working out. It comes with IPx3 rating, which means it can handle sweat without a worry. Its earbuds retract into its frame, so you won't have any tangled cords. The Tone Active is meant to be worn around the neck, where it will supposedly fit very well, thanks to its "stay-put, contoured design". LG also promises its battery will last for up to 9.5 hours of music playback, 13 hours of talk time, and up to 18 days of standby time. It supports aptX and can be paired to two devices simultaneously. In what is a very odd move, the LG Tone Active will initially be exclusive to AT&T. You'll be able to buy one from the carrier, in orange, starting on July 24. The price will be $129. It's unclear how long AT&T's exclusivity will last, or if any other color versions will be offered at some point in the future. Source |...

For an extra $19.99, five different FlipShells will be up for purchase, whereas in terms of memory you get to choose between a Moto G with 8GB of storage (and presumably 1GB of RAM), or one with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Specs of upcoming Lumia 550, 750 and 850 leak

Microsoft has been rapidly shifting strategy lately, writing off the Nokia acquisition and taking a lot more conservative approach for the next generation smartphones. Still it seems the company will not cancel any phones that were already in development when the strategy change happened. Microsoft is expected to release one of two phones annually in three different categories - flagship, business and value. Yet this won't happen until next year at least. Meanwhile Microsoft is prepping the rumored Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL flagships with Quad HD AMOLED screens, Snapdragon 810 chips and 20MP PureView snappers. But it is also developing three affordable handsets as well. Leak documents now shed some light on their mid-range backup - Lumia 550, Lumia 750 and Lumia 850. According to those the Lumia 550 will come with a 5" qHD display and run on Snapdragon 210 chip (quad-core 1GHz Cortex-A7 CPU, Adreno 304 GPU, 1GB RAM). There is a 5MP AF main camera, a 2MP selfie cam, 8GB expandable storage and a 1,905 mAh battery. Lumia 750 ups the 5" display resolution to 720p, bumps the chip to Snapdragon 410 (a quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A53, Adreno 306, 1GB RAM). The main camera is an 8MP unit with ZEISS optics, plus there is a 5MP selfie snapper. Lumia 750 will offer 8GB expandable storage and will be powered by a 2,650 mAh battery. Finally, the Lumia 850 is touted to pack a 5" 768p display, Snapdragon 410 chip with the CPU clocked at 1.4GHz, 1GB RAM and a 10MP ZEISS camera. The rest of the interesting specs include a 5MP front snapper, 16GB expandable storage and a 2,650 mAh battery. All three phones are protected by Gorilla Glass 3, lack LTE support and dual-band Wi-Fi, and run on Windows 10 for Mobile. Microsoft has an IFA event coming up on September 4, but it will focus on Windows tablets and PCs. There is a good chance though it hosts another press meeting to show off some new Lumia phones, too. The rumor has it Microsoft will be launching the Windows 10 Mobile updates starting October, which means the Windows 10 flagship phone should be upon...

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ live images appear

Tradition dictates that rumors and leaked renders of an upcoming smartphone should be followed by actual live photos, and here we go as Samsung's Galaxy Note 5 and S6 edge+ posed in front of a camera. Confirming what was already more or less established, the images depict the edged phablet in golden attire, while the Note 5 is in a more orthodox white. The Galaxy S6 edge+ isn't trying to hide its relation to its smaller edge brother released in March. In fact, if it wasn't for a minor difference in the curve of the corners and the straight top and bottom edges, we may as well be looking at the phone and not the phablet. The gold color will be appreciated by the flashier customers, though the contrasting home button may bother some. Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ The other more meaningful piece of intel, revealed by the photos, is the OS version on the Galaxy S6 edge+, and it's going to be Android 5.1.1 Lollipop - only the latest is befitting of the upmarket smartphone. The Galaxy Note 5 photos are almost equally as predictable, but they do clarify a few things. The sensor arrangement on the left of the earpiece corresponds to the renders we exclusively delivered, and not to the triple cutout previously leaked. Additionally, the thin bezels that we expected, based on display and overall dimensions, indeed appear to be a reality. Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ That's all there is for now, but expect to see higher-res better-lit spy images of Samsung's upcoming phablets, as the alleged August 13 launch date...

Samsung discontinues 128GB Galaxy S6/S6 Edge

When Samsung launched its flagship Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones, they were available in three storage options: 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB. But now, it looks like the 128GB variant has been discontinued in India. A quick look at the company's Indian website (see image above) reveals that the Galaxy S6 as well as S6 Edge are now only available in 32GB and 64GB options. It's unclear what that means for other markets, but in all likeliness many of them will follow suit. One possible reason for this could be poor sales, given the fact that the variants were astronomically priced - the 128GB Galaxy S6 model carried a price tag of INR 61,900 ($970), while the Edge variant was priced at INR 70,900...

Lenovo S60 Android Lollipop update now rolling out

If you happen to own Lenovo's S60 mid-ranger, here's some good news for you. The Chinese company has just started rolling out the update to Android 5.0 Lollipop for this particular device. Although it was made official this year, the Lenovo S60 launched in March running Android 4.4 KitKat, many months after Google unveiled Android 5.0 Lollipop. Now though Lenovo is rectifying that error by releasing this update. The new software version has so far been spotted in Greece. The rollout is happening over-the-air, so it might take a while for it to reach all devices out there. Rest assured however that your handset will notify you when it's ready to install. The download is a hefty 1.32GB affair, so you should probably make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi before grabbing it. You aren't supposed to lose data during the update process, but it's always safest to create a backup beforehand. Source (in...

Skype for Android gets updated looks for better usability

Skype for Android has received an update today, which should already be rolling out through the Google Play Store. Skype 5.6 for Android brings with it a refreshed design that aims to make the app even easier to use than before. First off, you can now see more chats at a glance in the Recent tab. And obviously you can still jump back into one of those chats with just a tap. Round avatars are now present throughout the app, finally making your friends' profile pictures consistent no matter where you may see them in Skype for Android. Additionally, your friends' online status will be shown on top of their avatars everywhere in the app. Inside each chat, the bubbles now have a new color, which makes the text stand out more. The messages thus become clearer, but you can also easily tell apart what you said from what everyone else did. Apparently those who do group chats with many participants should benefit most from this. As always, there are also a number of unnamed fixes and improvements in the new version of Skype, all designed to make the app more stable. Source |...
