ChatGPT now has 200 million weekly active users

It's hardly surprising that ChatGPT has managed to double its weekly active users since last November, given how much of a buzzword AI has been over the past year and the fact that ChatGPT is the most well known generative AI chatbot. The OpenAI service now boasts 200 million active users every week, up from 100 million in 2023. OpenAI also says 92% of Fortune 500 companies are using its products, while usage of its automated API has doubled since the release of GPT-4o Mini last month. In a statement on these matters, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said: People are using our tools now as...

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition to have S Pen support after all

Samsung's oft-rumored Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, known until very recently as Galaxy Z Fold Slim or Galaxy Z Fold Ultra, will actually have S Pen support, according to a new rumor today. This contradicts a previous rumor which claimed it wouldn't support Samsung's stylus. Of course, we can't vouch for the validity of either of these rumors, so do take both of them with a grain of salt. Also, keep in mind that supporting the S Pen, if it does pan out, won't mean that the phone will have a dedicated internal slot for the stylus, just that you will be able to use it on the device -...

The S24 FE measures 162 x 77.3 mm (height and width). The thickness is still a mystery. Another Google Pixel 9 Pro XL video teardown confirms battery replacement woes

A few hours ago iFixit published its teardown video of the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL, and now the same phone has been subjected to a similar treatment by Zack at JerryRigEverything. The device is opened from the back using heat and isopropyl alcohol. From the get-go repairs seem slightly hindered by the use of less common screws in some parts. And there are also multiple sizes of screws, which can complicate the reassembly process even further. The battery removal process is quite bad, as has also been evidenced in the other video. The pull tab basically breaks without doing its job, so...

iPhone 17 to have 12GB of RAM, compared to only 8GB in the iPhone 16

Apple is announcing the iPhone 16 series on September 9, and a new rumor claims all four models will get 8GB of RAM. In contrast, the iPhone 17 family coming next year will jump to 12GB of RAM. That is a pretty significant jump and it's apparently all to do with AI - this time around the Apple Intelligence features will be mostly cloud-based, but once the iPhone 17 models launch, a lot more AI will be on-device, hence the need for more RAM. Google has already upped the RAM of its devices with the Pixel 9 family that launched earlier this month, and it's even using a chunk of RAM...

Xiaomi button-less smartphone to arrive next year

Xiaomi is allegedly working on a button-less smartphone, which it will launch in the first half of next year. It is apparently codenamed Zhuque, and its standout feature will obviously be its total lack of buttons. Unfortunately the source of this information doesn't actually know what will replace the buttons - so it could be combination of gesture controls, pressure-sensitive edges, or voice commands. The phone will also have an under-display selfie camera, which will hopefully be better than Samsung's efforts in this space. The Zhuque will be powered by the upcoming Snapdragon 8+...

Google to roll out Android 15 to Pixels in October

The Pixel 9 family launched a couple of weeks ago with Android 14 on board, and so you may have been wondering what Google's plans are about releasing Android 15. According to a new rumor today, the company will only roll out Android 15 to its Pixels in October, perhaps around the middle of that month. That is despite the fact that Google will allegedly release the source code for Android 15 next week. Traditionally, the day of the source code drop was also the day the rollout began for Pixels, but that's been changing recently, with the Pixel team regularly withholding updates until...

Be warned: some Qi2 devices don't have magnets and it can be hard to tell

You know how Qi2 was touted as “MagSafe for Android”? Well, it turns out that is not the case. Qi2 (it’s pronounced “chee”) is split into two profiles and only one of them uses magnets. The Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) was contributed by Apple and is essentially MagSafe without the Apple trademark name. There is also Extended Power Profile (EPP), which is an improvement over the original Qi, but does not include magnets. There are ways to tell which devices support MPP and which do not, but it’s not easy. Early guidelines suggested that the Qi2 logo should be inside a circle if the...

The firmware version is T225NKOU8EXH2 and includes the July 2024 security patch and, of course, most of the new Android 14 and One UI 6.1-intrinsic features. Apple plans to produce more iPhones this year, mostly Pro and Pro Max models

The upcoming iPhone 16 series is expected to debut on September 10 this year, as long as the report is correct, of course. But what will the Pro and non-Pro mix will look like? Well, The Elec obtained supply chain information revealing Apple's production plans. The OEM will initially produce about 90.1 million iPhones, a tad more than last year's 86.2 million target. Like before, the company plans to produce more Pro Max models, which will amount to 37% of the total mix, or in other words, 33.2 million units. That's significantly more than last year's 24.2 million iPhone 15 Pro Max....
