OxygenOS 5.1.4 for OnePlus 5/5T brings new features and July security patch

Strangely enough, the OnePlus 3 and 3T got their July security patch before the OnePlus 5 and 5T but the wait is worth it because the last two handsets are now equipped with some brand new features. The OxygenOS 5.1.4 OTA update bumps up the security patch of both devices to July 2018 but more importantly, it introduces a cool new battery-related feature. It's called "Sleep Standby Mode," which reduces the amount of power drained while the device is not used. In the OnePlus forum post, the company explains that the device intelligently tracks your usage patterns and when you are...

Rumor: 2018 iPad Pros will have smaller footprint and no headphone jack

There's not much info on this year's upcoming iPad Pro lineup except that it should be equipped with the iPhone X's advanced face recognition tech. The latest report confirms that and contributes to the whole story. According to the Japanese website Macotakara, both the 10.5-inch and the 12.9-inch iPad Pros will have reduced dimensions overall. The 10.5-inch model will go from 250.6 x 174.1 x 6.1mm down to 247.5 x 178.7 x 6mm while the 12.9-inch one will get an even more extreme side cut - from 305.7 x 220.6 x 6.9mm down to 280 x 215 x 6.4. Galaxy J5 (2017) variants will receive Android Oreo, WiFi certification document shows

Samsung isn't famous for its timely updates, especially when it comes to its low-end and mid-range devices. They often need to wait several months to a whole year to receive a major Android OS update, but the latest news about some of the Galaxy J5 models is a breath of fresh air for many owners of the handsets - Android 8.0 Oreo is definitely coming. It became clear after the WiFi Alliance certified a total of 13 Galaxy J5 variants as Oreo-ready, which means that Samsung is almost done with the update. There's a huge 6.42-inch display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 px, which comes out to an aspect ratio of 19.5:9, just like Samsung's infinity display. Huawei phones can no longer install VLC player from Google Play store

The Android OS is so diverse and stretches to so many devices manufactured by different OEMs that at some point, it becomes almost impossible for developers to keep track of all the bugs that may occur when installed on different handsets. The latest drastic and somehow controversial decision from VideoLAN's developers' team lead to blacklisting Huawei phones and not allowing them to find the app on Google Play. This is due to a growing number of Huawei users complaining about specific features not working on their devices and giving the app low ratings. More specifically, background...

It was previously thought that Meizu is planning to release its new flagship smartphones on August 8 but the invite Meizu sent out to Chinese media clearly says July 30. And it doesn't get more official than this. Meizu invite We are also pretty certain that the Meizu is scheduling the event for the Meizu 16 and 16 Plus smartphones judging by the write-up on the box. Samsung unveils second-gen LPDDR4X chips with 16 gigabit capacity

Samsung introduced its LPDDR5 RAM, but there's still room in the market for the older standard - LPDDR4X. Today the company unveils the second generation of 4X chips, which deliver 4,266 megabits per second. These are 16 gigabit chips - that's 2GB per chip, compared to 1GB for the LPDDR5. This means only four of them are needed for the 8GB package that Samsung created, which saves on price (LPDDR5 needs eight chips for that capacity). Also, second-gen LPDDR4X uses 10% less power than the first-gen and the new 8GB package and is 20% thinner than one using the older 4X chips. This is...

Bluetooth vulnerability found on Apple and Android smartphones

According to specialists at CERT, a wide range of Bluetooth-enabled devices have a serious security vulnerability and it's not limited to just smartphones either - PCs, tablets and other devices need a fix ASAP. There's a missing check in the keys (Diffie-Hellman key exchange), so a hacker who's within Bluetooth range can intercept basically all the data that's being transferred. That includes not only notifications but also security codes for two-factor...
