The Lenovo A6000 Plus is finally getting Android 5.0 Lollipop in India

As of today, Lenovo 6000 Plus owners in India can finally enjoy Android Lollipop. The long-overdue OTA is currently seeding, so be sure to check for an update if you haven't received a notification yet. The package itself is quite big at 1092MB, has a build number of A6000_A_0001_15_08_27 and is based on Android 5.0.2. As already mentioned, the A6000 Plus is a very popular device, especially in India. It was launched shortly after its sibling - the A6000 sold like crazy in a few consecutive online flash sales and has an equally tantalizing price tag and also double the amount of RAM at 2GB. Unsurprisingly, it did fairly well is sales as well. As for the basic A6000, however, it is still stuck on Android 4.4 KitKat, which is slightly disappointing, especially considering the two devices are so alike in terms of hardware and compatibility shouldn't be a big issue. Still, there is hope, as Lenovo's official Android Update Matrix does state that the A6000 is also due for a Lollipop update by the endo of the month. Thanks for the tip...

Microsoft is going out of its way to insure you are using Edge on Windows 10

Microsoft is unquestionably the authority when it come the end-user PC market, but despite the whopping success of Windows throughout the years, the Silicon Valley giant just never seems to get it right with web browsers. Ever since the days of Netscape, Internet Explorer has been consistently outstaged by some leaner, prettier, faster and more standard-compliant alternative. Shaking such a deplorable reputation, be it deserved or not, has proven a nearly impossible task and despite the new direction, total redesign, better performance and even totally new name, the Microsoft Edge browser is still having a hard time retaining a loyal audience. But you don't have to trust me on that, the statistics speak for themselves. In any case, Microsoft has now hatched a new, slightly more aggressive plot to make you stick with the Edge browser that comes bundled with Windows 10. It appears that the first time you open up the browser and use Microsoft's own Bing search, which is unsurprisingly also set as a default and look up "Chrome" or "Firefox", the results come up along with a quite serious looking gray information strip, explaining that Microsoft Edge is the recommended choice on Windows 10. Now, we can definitely understand this desire for a clean slate and a new chance for Edge, but Microsoft is heading down a slippery slope yet again. Let's look back a little bit, shall we. A few years ago after a major industry scandal unfolded with accusations that Microsoft was abusing it OS monopoly to push Internet Explorer on users, a EU ruling forbid the company from setting it as a default browser and gave birth to a peculiar default browser chooser. That was back in 2009 and you might have missed it altogether, if you happen to live outside the European Union. The said regulations were active for five years and are no longer in place since the beginning of 2015. While this does mean that Microsoft is free to push Edge, the question can easily be rekindled and such banners are a risky gamble. On the other hand, all you loyal Microsoft fans out there can rest assured that Edge or a similar built-in browser isn't going away any time soon. Default or not, it is still a vital component of windows, needed for a lot of core and third-party apps to function. So chances are that in a way we are all Edge users, it all depends on how you look at it. Source |...

Leaked live photos show how the new Samsung Galaxy Z3 measures next to the Z1

The Galaxy Z3 is now well on its way to user markets, as predicted and units are apparently already out in the wild. We caught a first glimpse of the device in a few life photos, but today brings us another, more substantial leak. This time the Z3 is pictured right next to its sibling, the Z1, which allows for a pretty accurate size comparison. Actually, as is evident by the shots and the previously leaked specs sheet, which features a 5.0-inch display, mid-range chipset and 1.5GB of RAM, there is nothing really that special about the unit itself and normally it would simply go by mostly unnoticed. But, the Z3 has one major definitive feature which draws attention - it is powered by Tizen. This is only the second device that Samsung equips with its Tizen OS. Prior to the Galaxy Z1, the said platform was only reserved for the OEM's wearables, like the Gear S2 that was unveiled a few days ago at IFA. The tiny Z1 was a bold new ambassador for the Korean giant's believe that Tizen can in fact be a full-features smartphone OS, but it could only go so far in showcasing the experience with severely handicapped specs, like a 4.0-ich 400 x 800 pixels screen, a Spreadtrum SC7727S SoC and 768MB of RAM. Now, naturally, all eyes are on the Z3 and needless to say, expectations are high to see how far Tizen has come in its development and weather it can scale and work properly with more horse power. As far as we currently know, the Z3 should be unveiled at the Tizen Developer Summit on July 30-31 at Bengaluru, India and begin shipping in the second half of the ongoing year. The initial launch will cover India, Bangladesh, and Nepal, which leads us to believe that Samsung's strategy for the Z3 might be an aggressive price policy to make it a good deal in developing markets and perhaps even endeavor to steal away some market shares from Android One. As for the rest of the unit's specs, the aforementioned 5.0-ich display is said to be of the Super AMOLED variety, it typical Samsung fashion and have a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. Under the hood will be a quad-core chip, clocked at 1.3 GHz, probably a Spreadtrum SC7730S, but there have been rumors of a Snapdragon 410 as well. The camera setup consists of an 8MP primary shooter and a 5MP front-facing one. Other notable feature are the two SIM slots and a 2600 mAh battery. Source |...

New detailed renders allegedly showcase the 12.9-inch iPad Pro in more detail

If you are an Apple fan and have been lurking around for info on what the Cupertino giant has in store then you have most-definitely stumbled upon rumors of an iPad Pro at some point or another. Such speculations have actually been around ever since January 2014, which looks to be a record and at this point it is anybody's guess if there are more than pure fiction. Most of our current info on the tablet comes from pre-production renders that usually case and accessory manufacturer receive ahead of time to prepare their respective products. But in the past months we have gone through so many of these alleged renders and even already manufactured cases that it has become almost impossible to pinpoint one batch of really truthful information. Well, the latest in this long line of rumors comes courtesy of Twitter's OnLeaks, which definitely gives it more credibility. Apparently, Steve Hemmerstoffer has managed to narrow things down to only two renders, one from December 2014 and the other from June 2015 which do share a lot of similarities, but are also quite distinct. They both seem to prove that the iPad Pro will come with a large 12.3-inch display, as opposed to previous speculations of a 12.0-inch one. Also, both distinctly show four speaker grills. However, that's about it in terms of similarities. iPad Pro renders The older leak shows a device measuring 305.7 x 222.6 x 7.2mm, while the newer one is of a much thicker unit - 305.7 x 222.8 x 8mm. There are also some discrepancies in the control layout. The older render has the same volume buttons as previous smaller iPads, as well as a microphone instead of a lock switch and a second one near the back camera. The newer one, on the other hand, has the said lock switch intact, a power button and microphone on the top edge and a second microphone in the center top part of the back. Both variants seem to make sense. The older one is not only thinner, but also has newer control designs, but one could also argue that the newer one is thicker for a very important reason - Force Touch underneath the display, that was added later. It is also worth noting that rumors venture even further and talk of a Force Touch stylus, as well as a second screen smart cover. Thankfully, this madness should come to an end pretty soon at the September 9 Apple event. And until then, we leave it up to you to tell us, what you think of the iPad Pro...

The best from IFA 2015

Now that the IFA doors are opened to the public, our job there is pretty much over. If you can't drop by and see all the exciting gadgetry on display in Berlin yourself, it's ok. Here are the few announcements you shouldn't miss. Unlike previous years, Samsung didn't wait for the Berlin venue to out its new Note phablet, which definitely left a dent in the final lineup. This, however, cleared the stage for Sony, which delivered a whole new Z5 family and definitely stole the spotlight. There were, however, at least a few interesting offers from other OEMs that we didn't overlook, so without further ado, here are the highlights of the show. Best phone Sony Xperia Z5 Premium Like we said, Sony definitely takes the cake this year. Its new Z5 lineup generated a huge amount of interest, as is evident by our news and review sections, as well as the top ten chart which is now dominated by the Xperia Z5 Premium and its world first 4K display. Xperia Z5 Premium A 4K display on a phone might turn out to be more of a gimmick than a truly-useful feature, but it is undoubtedly a step forward. That, along with the slightly bigger display size and the fact that the Z5 Premium offers just about everything the Z5 does and add some was more than enough for the 5.5-inch unit to outshine both the regular Z5 and the Z5 Compact. If we have to point out a winner, it would probably by the Z5 Premium, although there is another worthy contender that needs to be mentioned. Huawei Mate S That would be the Mate S. It is a true flagship offer and an emanation of Huawei's recent accent to high-end quality phones. Its metal exterior is incredibly stylish and just looks premium. This feeling is only furthered by the sharp 5.5-inch AMOLED display that seem to be seamlessly molded into the chassis. Huawei has also went out of its way to fit the Mate S with as much tech as possible and the phone now has an all-new smart fingerprint sensor, more powerful that the one on the Mate7 and even Force Touch. Huawei Mate S It is definitely hard to point out the start of the show between the two, so we will just leave it up to you to decide. Best smartwatch Everybody seems to be making a smartwatch these days and we definitely can't blame them for trying. The odd new breed of wearable tech might still feel like more of a gimmick than a must-have accessory, but the figures don't lie and the tiny devices have quickly turned into a lucrative niche. Huawei Watch This being said, it was not surprising that wearables popped out all over the Berlin venue. But if quality is what you are after then you undoubtedly need to look into the Huawei Watch. And before you say it isn't new at all and was announced way back at MWC in March, well, technically that is true, but the gadget did finally go up for presale during IFA, so it counts. There is one major definitive feature about the Huawei Watch that simply seems to give it an edge compared to other Android Wear devices - it was designed as a proper watch first and then a smart gadget and that approach has really paid off. If you like a smart, luxurious assistant that you won't have to substitute for the real thing when putting on a suit, then the Huawei Watch is probably your best bet. It also helps that is currently seems to utilize the most superior hardware in the Android Wear realm. Huawei Watch Moto 360(2nd gen) But, there is also another smartwatch that we can't help but mention - the Moto 360 (2nd gen). It is arguably the successor to the watch that rekindled the wearable concept and gave it a new twist - a round form factor. And before you quote us on that in the comments, we are quite aware of the "flat tire" display form factor, which just happens to persist in the new Moto 360 as well. Some might not mind it or even find it appealing as a design feature, but it does seem to take away some of the appeal of the wearable. That is why we are naming it a close second, although we must say it was a tough call. Moto 360 (2nd gen) Best tablet Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro Yet another tough choice, but for a slightly different reason. It all seems to come down to what your idea of a tablet and its purpose is (don't worry, we are still not completely sure ourselves). If you think of it like a portable entertainment center, then the...

Good Technology secure mobile solutions company will be joining the BlackBerry family

BlackBerry just struck a deal with the California-based Good Technology and will now be merging its mobile services into the already extensive enterprise suite. $425 million were apparently enough to snatch the mobile business, which has been an IPO candidate for quite some time now. The deal is actually quite good and here is why. Good Technology is far from a household name, but it is a popular vendor of secure cross-platform mobile management solutions. Thus, the US company is actually offering similar services to BlackBerry's enterprise suits, but with a cross-platform approach or what is known as a bring-your-own-device approach. Furthermore, Good Technology has been doing fairly well on the market with more than 6,200 organizations in over 190 countries using their services of which more than 50 are on the FORTUNE 100 list. BlackBerry's plan is to merge its existing portfolio of enterprise services and solutions with the ones from Good Technology. This way the Canadian tech giant hopes to modernize and broaden its enterprise secure communication offers, which were once undisputed in their total market domination, but have been suffering lately due to the growing popularity of Android and iOS. To quote BlackBerry's own statement: BlackBerry's leadership in MDM, application management and secure connectivity combined with Good's leadership in mobile containers, productivity suite, service management and SDKs will create a higher-value product stack with the capability to expand well beyond EMM collaboration and application enablement This all sounds like a terribly complicated endeavor and it most certainly is, but if everything pans out the end result should be a powerful cross-platform suite that can easily manage Android, iOS, Windows, BlackBerry devices and more, complete with more than 2000 ISV and custom apps that Good currently has trough either in-house development or in its partner program. This also means that the existing client and partnership base will be transferred to BlackBerry as well to further strengthen in enterprise branch. Source |...

Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3C and Pixi First phones, Pixi 3 (10) tablet announced

After the launch of the Go and Pop ranges members yesterday, Alcatel just announced the OneTouch Idol 3C and OneTouch Pixi First smartphones. The also unveiled OneTouch Pixi 3 (10) tablet is another addition to the family of already innumerable Pixi devices. The OneTouch Idol 3C is Alcatel's best equipped model we've seen at IFA and it is in fact specced almost the same as the OneTouch Idol 3 (5.5). The Idol 3C borrows the 5.5-inch FullHD IPS panel of the Idol 3 and puts it a new body with interchangeable covers in bright colors. Even the fully reversible nature of the Idol 3 has been kept, so you shouldn't worry whether you pick up the phone mic-side up when answering a call in the dark. Underneath the covers ticks the Snapdragon 615, its dual quad-core CPU clocked at 1.5GHz and 1.0GHz respectively. 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage shape up the same package as the single-SIM version of the Idol 3 (5.5). The primary camera consists of a 13MP sensor housed behind a five-element f/2.0 lens, and the front cam is an 8MP fixed-focus affair. There's multi-band 2G/3G, as well as Cat.4 LTE, while local connectivity covers Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, and NFC. A GPS receiver is also on board with A-GPS, and the FM radio even has RDS. Battery capacity is 2,910mAh, and if the specific number rings a bell, refer to the Idol 3C spec page. At the other end of the spectrum we find the OneTouch Pixi First. It's a humble 4 inches in diagonal, with a 800x480 pixels resolution. Powered by a Spreadtrum SC7731 chipset with a 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, paired with 512MB or RAM, the Pixi First won't win any performance awards. Thankfully, the meagre 4GB of internal storage can be expanded by popping in a microSD card. The smartphone comes with a 5MP/2MP camera combo, both fixed-focus, but it does have a flash on the back. Cellular connectivity is limited to 2G/3G only, and there will be a dual-SIM version as well. You do get Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth, though in a somewhat ancient 2.1 version. There's also GPS and an FM radio - Alcatel seems to include the feature throughout its lineup. Battery capacity is a modest 1,450mAh. The physical dimensions are 122. X 64.4 x 9.7mm. The Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 3 (10) is the largest slate to join the Pixi tablet lineup. Much like Pixi 3 (8), the 10-incher comes with 1,280x800 pixels resolution, but on this diagonal it results in an even lower pixel density of 149ppi. Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 3 (10) The Mediatek MT8127 chipset is in charge with a 1.3GHz dual-core processor and a single gig of RAM. Internal storage is 16GB and the microSD slot takes cards up to 64GB. A basic 5MP/2MP camera duo is on board as a last resort. The tablet is Wi-Fi only, so there's no cellular radios, but there is GPS and Bluetooth 4.1. Battery capacity is rated at 4,060mAh, and the device measures 255.5 x 155 x...

Sony rumoured to launch Xperia Z5 Compact Premium with 1080p display in Japan

Just days after Sony unveiled the Xperia Z5 series, which consists of the Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact, and Z5 Premium smartphones, the rumour mill is abuzz that company is preparing to launch a Premium model of the Z5 Compact in its home country of Japan. According to a report out of China, the device will sport a 4.6-inch 1080p display, and will come with 4GB RAM and a 2,900 mAh battery. This compares to Z5 Compact's 720p display, 2GB RAM, and 2,700 mAh battery. Rest of the specs are said to be same. The report also says that the handset will be available through NTT DoCoMo. There was, however, no word on the pricing. Needless to say, none of this has been officially confirmed by Sony, so take it with a pinch of...

Mozilla says hacker stole security-sensitive info after compromising its bug-tracking system

In a dedicated blog post, Mozilla has disclosed that its bug-tracking system was compromised and the hacker managed to take away security-sensitive information, which the company believes was used to attack users of its Firefox web browser. Mozilla said they believe the attacker used the stolen information to exploit the vulnerability that was patched on August 6, adding that Firefox version released on August 27 contains patches to all the vulnerabilities that that attacker could have learned about. The company also shared that they're making improvements to their bug-tracking system to make sure that this doesn't happen again. "As an immediate first step, all users with access to security-sensitive information have been required to change their passwords and use two-factor authentication," Mozilla said. "We are reducing the number of users with privileged access and limiting what each privileged user can...

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium teardown reveals a dual heat pipe

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 chipset has quite a reputation for loving to overheat. On the other hand, it is that chip maker's current top of the line offering, so some smartphone makers are seeing themselves in a situation where they have to use it for their flagships. Case in point: Sony. The Xperia Z5 Premium goes with the Snapdragon 810, because to pair a 4K touchscreen with anything less simply wouldn't have made sense. But what about the heat? Well, it looks like Sony has found a solution. The image you see above is said to show a disassembled Xperia Z5 Premium, a unit which has been put through a teardown. And sitting pretty in the upper side of the phone we see a dual heat pipe, undoubtedly put there to take care of the S810's proper ventilation. Furthermore, Sony has applied a lot of thermal paste onto the innards of the Z5 Premium, in order to make things even less prone to overheating. So in theory we should get cooler behavior from the S810 chip inside the Z5 Premium. However, just how efficient this system turns out to be in real-life use is something that remains to be seen. Nokia's upcoming C1 Android smartphone allegedly shown in leaked renders

For many months now there's been speculation about Nokia re-entering the smartphone space in 2016, after the non-compete clause embedded in the sale of its smartphone division to Microsoft expires. And after initially denying it, even the Finnish company's CEO said we should in fact expect to see some Nokia-branded handsets next year. The first of those could be the C1, allegedly depicted by the leaked renders you can see below. A word of caution: these have been posted on Weibo (China's Twitter equivalent) and there's no way to tell if they're really leaked renders of the new Nokia phone or simply what someone hopes this will look like. Do keep in mind that another alleged render of the C1 turned up last December and was immediately debunked as being nothing more than a concept. Assuming this is real, the Nokia C1 will complement the already launched N1 tablet in the company's portfolio. That said, like the N1 it's expected to be produced by another company, with Nokia being involved in the design and granting a license for the use of its name. No specs for the C1 have been outed this time around, but previous mumblings talked about it sporting a 5-inch 720p touchscreen, an 8 MP rear camera, a 5 MP front snapper, and an Intel processor aided by 2GB of RAM. What can be gathered from the renders is that it will use a unibody construction, though it's not entirely obvious whether we're looking at plastic or metal. The C1 seems pretty thin too. Google Translate for Android works systemwide in Marshmallow

The Google Translate app for Android has a new trick up its sleeve, but for now it only works if you're running the Marshmallow Developer Preview. This will, however, become more widely available as the final release of Android 6.0 Marshmallow gets out and starts spreading. We're talking about the fact that Google Translate works systemwide, if you run the aforementioned iteration of Android and also if you have version 4.3 of the app (or newer). As portrayed in the screenshots above, what this means is that when you select some text in whichever app you happen to be using, you don't have to copy it, then switch to the Google Translate app in order to have it converted into another language. Now when you select text "Translate" appears as a direct option, and if you tap on that a pop-up Google Translate window will show up and quickly give you what you want. This functionality takes advantage of Marshmallow's new contextual selection feature, and it should work anywhere you can select text. This makes using Google Translate on Android for things you find written in an app or on a website a lot more useful than it's been so...

Motorola Nexus 6 prices slashed, 32GB version now only $350

The LG Nexus 5 (2015) (or Nexus 5X, perhaps?) and the Huawei Nexus 6 (2015) are right around the corner. If the ever more detailed leaks on Google's upcoming Marshmallow pair wasn't enough of an indication, the latest price cut of the current Motorola-made Nexus 6 clears all doubt. Originally launched at $650, the Nexus 6 now goes for $350 on Amazon.com, another $150 off, compared to the previous price cut. That's for the 32GB storage version, while doubling the internal memory still commands a $50 premium. At $350, or even at $400 for the 64GB, the Nexus 6 poses a serious threat to Motorola's own brand new Moto X Pure Edition (the US moniker for what will be globally available as Moto X Style). The pre-orders for the unlocked Moto X Pure Edition started a few days ago, but the year-old Nexus 6 has a few trump cards over it, and now that the price difference is out of the way, it may end up cannibalizing its sales. Optical image stabilization, larger display, superior GPU, larger battery with built-in inductive charging are all in Nexus' favor. The Moto X Pure does have a much higher resolution main camera with phase detection, and its front shooter has an LED flash on top of being higher-resolution too. A microSD slot is present on the Pure and not on the 6, and it's hard to beat Motorola's customization options. A very tough call between these two. Source |...

KGI claims the upcoming iPhone 6s will offer the same storage options as the current generation

As most of you surely know, Apple has set its grand unveiling event for September 9 and with IFA press conferences all but over, the industry is channeling its attention to the upcoming iPhone 6s. Rumors and speculations about the device have been more than plentiful and today a brand new twist might reveal yet another piece of the puzzle. Ming-Chi Kuo, who is an analyst working at KGI Securities allegedly sent out a memo to his investors, claiming that the next iPhone due - the 6s and 6s Plus, will be offered with the same storage options as the current generation. That would mean 16GB, 64GB and 128GB. If the rumor is true then it is most likely based on some inside information and is thus quite plausible. This, however raises a rather interesting question. Another prevailing rumor for the new iPhone is that it will bring a camera upgrade, bumping resolution up to 12MP. This would, of course, allow the phone to capture 4K video and it only makes sense that Apple will make the option available in order to catch up to Android competitors. 16GB, however, is fairly limiting and the even the owners of the current models are already struggling with this sort of storage. Without a memory card slot, 4K just seems ludicrous on a basic model and it is interesting to see how Cupertino handles the situation. Other than that, we are fairly sure of a few other aspects of the new iPhone. For one, it should be housed in the same chassis as the current generation as was the case with most previous "s" iterations. However, the iPhone 4s did prove that that was not set in stone and given the addition of a new camera on the back, as well as a better 5Mp one on the front, like another rumor suggests, could introduce the necessity for a slightly thicker. Hopefully, this won't be the case and current accessories will remain compatible. Force Touch is also almost definitely going to find its way into the handset and so will a new and improved A9 chip. RAM, however, will likely remain at 1GB. As for pricing and availability, industry sources have already claimed a September 11 preorder date and most-probably and unchanged price...

Alcatel unveils the OneTouch Pop Up, Star and Go Play phones, Go Watch

Alcatel has already announced a myriad of smartphones at IFA, with even more to come, we've been told. On top of that there's also a smartwatch, running a proprietary OS. The OneTouch Pop Up is the highest-specced of the lineup and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 610 (MSM8929) with an octa-core processor clocked at up to 1.4GHz. There are 2GB of RAM on board and the built-in storage is 16GB, expandable via microSD. The display is a 5-inch IPS unit with 720p resolution and 5-finger multi touch support. The primary camera is a 13MP shooter with a sensor size of 1/3.06", f/2.0 lens aperture and an LED flash. On the front there is a 5MP fixed-focus selfie snapper. There's a reasonable connectivity suite, which includes multi-band 2G/3G/4G radios, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS and the smartphones also have an FM radio receiver. It's a dual-SIM dual-standby smartphone with a battery capacity is 2,000mAh. The OneTouch Pop Star comes in two distinct versions, one limited to 3G networks only, the other supporting Cat.4 LTE on top. The differences boil down to chipset and height (oddly), with the 3G version sporting a Mediatek MT6580 and measuring 141 x 71.5 x 8.6mm, while the 4G employs the MT6735P SoC and is 1.5mm taller. Either model comes with a single gig of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage. Imaging department is a bit more modestly equipped with only an 8MP primary camera, still with an LED flash. The 5MP FF front snapper is kept as well. Interestingly, the 3G version can shoot 1080p videos, while the 4G variant is capped at 720p. The display is again 5 inches in diagonal with HD resolution, though alcatel quotes it as Full Lamination, which means there's no separate touch sensor layer, thus resulting in a thinner glass/touch sensor/display assembly. Cellular connectivity aside, both versions support Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS and FM radio reception. Battery capacity is again 2,000mAh, with a quoted charging time of 3 hours. Dual-SIM versions will also be available. The Pop Star may be low on specs, but is certainly strong on customizability and will be offered with a wide range of back covers. The number of options is so large that they're grouped into entire collections. There's the Funky collection with "psychedelic designs" (presumably the neon-colored ones), the Leather collection (not actual leather), the Fashion collection, and the wood-like Nature-ECO collection. Then comes the OneTouch Go Play smartphone which boasts an IP67 certification for protection against the elements. Alcatel also claims it's shockproof, though this is harder to quantify. The specsheet lists a Snapdragon 410 chipset, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage, thankfully expandable. The display is a 5-inch 720p TFT panel. It has the same 8MP/5MP camera combo as the Pop Star, with 1080p video recording. Alcatel is not new to the smartwatch world having already launched its OneTouch Watch, but is now expanding its portfolio with a more rugged Casio G-shock-style Go Watch. Pegged as the perfect companion in underwater activities for the Go Play smartphone, that's where the Go Watch borrows most of its design cues. The Go Watch is powered by a modest 180MHz Cortex-M4 CPU and features a 1.22-inch IPS display with (240 x 204), and its flat-tire nature is masked by the rugged bezel. The wearable measures 50.5mm in diameter and is 13mm thick, while the wristband is 22mm wide. Alcatel promises 2-5 days of battery life out of the 225mAh cell. The smartwatch has most of the features you would expect, including a heart rate sensor and a vibration motor for notifications, as well as a gyro sensor and accelerometer, but adds an altimeter on top of all these. It runs on a proprietary OS, so no immediate access to Android Wear apps. It is, however, compatible with both Android smartphones, running Jelly Bean 4.3 and up, and Apple devices with iOS7 or newer. You can check out our hands-on report on the Alcatels, while we're waiting for a few more promised...

Chrome 45 for desktop brings improved RAM management

Google has released Chrome 45 for desktop, which is now available to download on PC, Mac, and Linux. The biggest change in this update is improved RAM management, which reduces the memory usage of idle tabs in the background. Chrome can now check on tabs in the background and can tell if there is no activity on them for a while. It will then aggressively clear unused memory to reduce the memory footprint of those tabs. Google claims it can free up about 10% memory on an average and as much as a quarter for sites like Gmail. Chrome will also intelligently restore your tabs upon relaunch, if you use that feature. The tabs are restored based on when they were accessed and older tabs are not restored until you click on them to save memory, especially on low memory machines. As we wrote about before, Chrome will now also not load non-essential Flash content on websites, which should save up to 15% battery on laptops. Chrome 45 is now available to download and if you have it installed has probably updated itself by...

Report: Qualcomm's claim on SD820's power efficiency doesn't mean double the battery life

A couple of days ago, Qualcomm dedicated an entire blog post detailing the design of its upcoming Snapdragon 820 system-on-chip (SoC), with special focus on Kryo, its first custom-designed 64-bit quad-core CPU. The company claimed that the chipset will be up to twice as powerful and energy efficient as its predecessor, Snapdragon 810. Being related to SD820, the post, obviously, received widespread coverage. However, many popular online publications interpreted Qualcomm's claim on SD820's power efficiency as saying that it will double your device's battery life - see reports from Economic Times, The Next Web, and WMPoweruser. Independent analyst and consultant Richi Jennings was the first to point this out, claiming that the interpretation isn't correct. "OK, so obviously there's a world of difference between an SoC that's up to 2x as efficient and an entire phone getting double the battery life," he said in an article on ComputerWorld. "For starters, the 820 isn't going to make today's huge displays suck any less power, amirite?" He also pointed to a Forbes article that explains how the 820 is so much more efficient - you can read that article...

T-Mobile's newly-launched native video calling feature is available on newest Samsung phones

T-Mobile has launched a new feature that lets you make video calls from within your smartphone's dialer, similar to the way you make normal phone calls. Dubbed Video Calling, the feature doesn't require you to download and install additional apps, the company said. "On devices with T-Mobile Video Calling, small camera icons appear next to contacts with devices able to receive video calls," said Neville Ray, T-Mobile's CTO, in a blog post. "If the person you're calling can't take video calls, the video call icon is greyed out." Currently, the feature only works for T-Mobile users, i.e. for calls made within the magenta carrier's network. However, Ray said they're working working with others to make it available across wireless networks. Supported handsets include Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy Note5, Galaxy S6, and Galaxy S6 edge. The first two already have the feature available through simple software updates, while the latter two will get it next week. Users of these devices can install the update by heading to Settings -> About Device -> Software Update. Three more devices will be added to the list by the end of the year, Ray...

Sony Xperia T2 Ultra Dual is now receiving Android 5.1.1

Sony is now rolling out the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update to another of its devices, but this time it's not a member of the Xperia Z line of current and former flagships. Today the newest version of Google's mobile operating system is hitting the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra Dual, which is the dual-SIM version of the Xperia T2 Ultra from last year. There's no word yet on when the same software release should reach the single-SIM iteration of the same model, but it's clearly due to happen soon. In the meantime, if you own the T2 Ultra Dual, expect to see an update notification popping up any day now. After you've gone through the necessary steps and installed the new bits, you'll be on build number 19.4.A.0.182. Android 5.1 is mainly a bug-fixing release, and with this rollout Sony is thankfully also patching the much-discussed Stagefright vulnerability, so it won't affect the Xperia T2 Ultra Dual after the update is up and...

Gear S2 will cost you €349 in Europe, €399 for the S2 Classic

Samsung's already announced the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic smartwatches on Monday, but today the company held a special event at IFA in Berlin just for them. The new wearables are clearly the most attractive ones the Korean company has ever produced, and they're also its first to sport a round touchscreen. If you like what you've seen so far about the Gear S2 and S2 Classic (perhaps by having taken a look at our hands-on report), then you might be wondering how much they will cost. The answer is that neither will be cheap. The company seems to think that their new features (such as the rotating bezel) along with its Tizen-based watch UI are worth quite a sum. In Europe it's expected that the Gear S2 will be priced at €349, while the Gear S2 Classic will go for €399. These pricing levels have only been confirmed for Finland thus far, but we see no reason for them to differ in other Eurozone countries. As for the US, given what usually goes on in the mobile world when it comes to converting prices from one currency to another, we expect to see the Gear S2 selling for $349, with the Gear S2 Classic having the asking price of $399. Obviously the 3G-capable version of the S2 should be more expensive than either of these, but just how much more so isn't known yet. The Gear S2 and S2 Classic are supposed to become available worldwide sometime in October. Source |...

YU schedules its next smartphone unveiling for September 8

It looks like Micromax-backed Indian smartphone brand YU is now ready to launch its next device. It's still unclear what it will call the handset that will be next in line following the Yureka, Yureka Plus, and Yuphoria. But what is clear is that the company has scheduled an event for September 8, and it's now sending out press invites for it. On that occasion, we're told we'll see the future meeting the past, in order for "the next wonder" to be unveiled. Could this hint that the device in question will be named Wonder? Maybe, maybe not. Anyway, no other details are apparent from the invite itself and we haven't seen any recent leaks of YU smartphones, so this one is still very much a mystery. What we do know is that the new product will be offered via Snapdeal, probably through an exclusive-type...

Large Samsung Galaxy View tablet gets teased

Last month we heard a rather outlandish claim - that Samsung is working on bringing to market a tablet with a whopping 18.4-inch touchscreen. Not long after that, a new report seemingly confirmed the information. What's more, this also brought us a list of leaked specs for the gigantic device. And today Samsung itself may have confirmed its existence, while also revealing what it will be called. At the end of its press conference focused on the Gear S2, the Korean company outed a very short teaser for the Galaxy View tablet. No other details, aside from its looks and name, have been made public at this point. So we should probably expect those to come at some point in the (hopefully near) future. This type of teasing isn't actually new for Samsung - when it introduced the Note5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ in August the Gear S2 smartwatch got the same treatment. If what you see pictured above is in fact the rumored 18.4-inch tablet, then it should come with a 1080p touchscreen, a 64-bit Exynos 7580 chipset with 1.6 GHz octa-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, an 8 MP rear camera, a 2.1 MP front-facing unit, and a 5,700 mAh battery. First leaked teaser picture of Xiaomi Mi 5 suggests a fingerprint scanner

Xiaomi Mi 5 name popped up quite a few times throughout the last year and yet it is still under wraps. The most recent leak from AnTuTu's result database spilled the beans on the power of its chipset - suggesting either a new generation of Snapdragon 810 or 820, or perhaps the latest MediaTek Helio X20 with ten-core tri-cluster processor. Anyway the rest of the rumors united around a 5.3" Quad HD display, 4 gigs of RAM and a 16MP OIS camera. USB Type-C port completes the rumor roundup. Today, we got a supposedly leaked teaser image of the Xiaomi Mi 5. It reveals pretty much nothing but the possibility of a fingerprint scanner. We boosted the contrast a little bit, but we still got nothing from the Chinese text below. Hopefully the official announcement will happen...

LG G4 Note could be released on October 10

For quite a while now, LG has been rumored to be preparing a new flagship smartphone, one to launch in the latter half of this year. Recently some of the previously leaked details about it, such as having a premium metal build, have been refuted - but it looks like it's coming nevertheless. It could be called G4 Pro or G4 Note, depending on which rumor you're more inclined to believe. The handset may top the 'vanilla' G4 when it comes to specs. A new report from LG's native South Korea now tells us that this new LG model will be released on October 10. That date could only apply to that market, keep in mind. Apparently the timeline has been revealed at an LG briefing, by a company official no less. We don't get any rumored specs this time around. The device should have a removable battery, rear-mounted power and volume buttons, and may even sport a stylus. But few things have been conclusively uttered about this phone, so the G4 Pro or G4 Note is still very much a mystery at this point. Though if it will be out next month, expect to hear a lot more about it in the coming weeks. Source (in Korean) |...

Google launches new Street View apps for Android and iOS

Today Google updated the Android's Street View app and launched a standalone Street View app for the iOS. Both apps offer the same functionality and support adding your photo spheres around the globe. Now you can not only explore the world via street view and check out amazing places thanks to the photos spheres worldwide, but you can also contribute to the latter. Both Street View apps support uploading your spheres and sharing them in the world. Exploring the Street View collections is now very easy, with a very capable Search functionality. The uploading of spheres is easy too, and Google even added support for third-party connection with spherical cameras such as the Ricoh Theta S and NCTech iris360. The Theta S spherical camera was in fact unveiled today as well. The Street View app is replacing the Photo Sphere Camera app on iOS, while the Android version should be available for update in the Play Store, if it wasn't automatically updated already. LG Nexus 5X to launch on September 29 priced at $400

We've already heard not once, but twice that September 29 is the date when Google will finally unveil its two Nexus smartphones for this year - a Huawei-made phablet and an LG offering that's meant to be the successor to the Nexus 5 from 2013. Up until now we've been calling this the Nexus 5 (2015), but a new rumor says that won't be its final name. Apparently Google could market it as the Nexus 5X. The caveat here is that the search giant reportedly hasn't made up its mind yet. That seems like a good idea, and certainly a better one than simply going for Nexus 5 (2nd gen) or Nexus 5 (2015). It reads better and it should lead to less confusion among prospective customers. The name isn't all that's been revealed today. One of the key mystery aspects about the 2015 Nexus phones has so far been the pricing, and now there's some light being shed onto that. According to a source that's said to be reliable, the Nexus 5X will be around $50 more expensive than its predecessor. This means that, if Google will stick with 16GB of storage for the base model, you should be able to grab one of those for $400. If a 32GB iteration comes out too, then that will probably cost $450. This will interestingly put the Nexus 5X in direct competition (in terms of price) with the Moto X Pure Edition, at least in the US. That also starts at $399, but its specs may be higher-end than what we'll see from the new Nexus. The 16GB OnePlus 2 is actually $70 cheaper than the Nexus 5X, but its dreaded invite system means your chances of actually buying one are pretty slim. The source of all this warns that the information isn't final, and things may change. He or she also mentions that the Nexus 5X will go on sale at Google's online store the day of the announcement, on September 29 that is. The image you can see above is also said to be an accurate representation of the device's looks. It will be offered in black, white, and light blue, it will come with a plastic build and a USB Type-C...

Watch the Samsung press conference live here

This year Samsung couldn't wait until September for its customary IFA phablet announcement and the Galaxy Note5 got an early launch last month, joined by the Galaxy S6 edge+. Being a no-show at the expo was out of the question, though, and the Koreans kept the Gear S2 smartwatch to entertain the audience in Berlin, though it too was already made official a couple of days ago. The next-generation wearable will come in two variants - the plain, outdoorsy one dubbed simply Gear S2, and the more formally styled Gear S2 classic. Both of them circular and water resistant, the watches pack a 1.2-inch Super AMOLED display, 1GHZ dual-core processor and half a gig of RAM. The watch witnesses Samsung's continued adoption of its own Tizen OS, while competitors are all using Android Wear. Having an entire keynote focused on a single smartwatch (ok, technically two) sounds a bit dull so we won't be surprised to see another iteration of the Gear VR virtual reality headset. After all, the new Note5 lacks a companion in this respect. Plus, the VR Experience Zones set up around Berlin would make for nice headlines - "New Gear VR headset launched while users remotely explore Samsung's booth in VR". Beat that, OnePlus. You can watch the live stream of the event...

LG G4 Pro tipped to come with a plastic body and removable battery

A rumor was started earlier this year, that the G4 might not be the company's true flagship for 2015. A metal-clad super high-end model was mentioned six months ago, and then resurfaced in rumors a few months later, but is yet to materialize. Both the G4 Pro and G4 Note monikers have been heard, depending on who you ask. A new report out of Korea has made its way to us despite the ongoing expo craze at IFA and aims to refute some of the previously available info, but also adds a few new details. Most notably, it's said that the metal build has been abandoned, in favor of a plastic one. Apparently, the all-metal body clashes with the user-replaceable battery, and now it has become top priority, thus overriding the initial design. LG seems to be the only big-name manufacturer who is sticking to user-replaceable batteries for its top models, now that Samsung has gone for sealed cells even on the Galaxy Note5. It makes for good PR statements to be the only one offering a feature, any feature. LG arguably has the most important one, so it's understandable to exploit it to the fullest. The company's characteristic rear control layout will reportedly make its way to the G4 Pro, though. Certain sources have pointed to its demise, but now it's back on the table. You should have in mind that all of the above is strictly word of mouth with no tangible evidence to support iшs, so the potential LG G4 Pro remains a mystery. Source |...

SEAT cars will support Apple Car Play, Android Auto and MirrorLink

SEAT's new Full Link claims to be the first car infotainment system that supports the three major smartphone-to-head unit technologies - Apple Car Play, Android Auto and MirrorLink. The new SEAT Ibiza (launched in May in Barcelona) and the upcoming Alhambra support the new tech, with more cors to come in 2016. Full Link comes as standard on Connect (SEAT's infotainment system) and is a £385 ($590) addon for SE models and above. It sports a 6.5" touchscreen that supports gesture control (e.g. swipe to call). Apple Car Play and Android Auto have strict rules about which apps are allowed (to ensure no distractions while driving), but Apple and Google Maps can handle navigation duties, Spotify can substitute radio and so on. MirrorLink has fewer restrictions about allowed apps. SEAT is also developing DriveApp, which will remind you to check tire pressure, will show the nearest SEAT dealers if something needs fixing and will alert you to traffic jam. The Challenger feature encourages green competition - it gamifies driving efficiently. It can even measure your pulse while you drive (with compatible phones) though that sounds more like a racing feature rather than a green one. Click for full size Besides the Ibiza and Alhambra, the Leon and Toledo 2016 models will also support Full Link. By the way, Volkswagen has announced that its 2016 models will also support the three technologies, SEAT is just the first to make it to the market. And before you ask, Windows Phone does not support MirrorLink. Symbian did, but not Windows...

Gionee S5.1 Pro goes official with bigger screen, better chipset

Gionee announced a new Pro version of its successful Elife S5.1 smartphone from last year. It brings a bigger display, a better GPU, more RAM, higher resolution cameras and a microSD slot. Oddly, according to the sources, the Elife moniker is missing from the S5.1 Pro. The new Gionee S5.1 Pro packs a 5" 720p AMOLED display with 2.5D Gorilla Glass 4 and runs on the MediaTek MT6753 chipset. The SoC offers an octa-core 1.3GHz Cortex-A53, Mali-720MP3 GPU and 2GB of RAM. It also supports LTE Cat.4 connectivity. The rest of the specs include 16GB storage expandable via a microSD card, a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP selfie snapper, and a 2,400 mAh battery. The S5.1 Pro is just 6.35mm thin and weighs 129 g. Just like its predecessor, the Pro version is quite a looker relying on a dual glass design glued with a metal frame. The S5.1 Pro is a dual-SIM smartphone and runs on the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop skinned with Amigo 3.0 launcher. It is offered only in while color with gold frame. The Gionee S5.1 Pro will hit the shelves in China this month for around $300. There is no word on an international availability just yet. Thanks to everyone, who sent this...

Lenovo Vibe P1 and P1m pack massive batteries, two SIM slots

Lenovo introduced the Vibe P series with two new models - the P1 and P1m. The P stands for power, both handsets features massive batteries and the ability to charge up other devices. Lenovo Vibe P1 Features a whopping 5,000mAh battery, the P1 promises up to 81 hours of battery life. The charger puts out a ridiculous 24W of power - just below Oppo's 25W VOOC charger. The Rocket Charge function monitors the battery to prevent overheating and will give you close to 3 hours of talk time in 5 minutes of charging. The phone can charge various accessories (like a Bluetooth headset) over USB OTG, it has enough juice for phones with smaller capacities too. The Lenovo Vibe P1 is so focused on long battery life that it features a physical switch, the OneKey Power Saver, that activates a low-power mode that doubles the battery endurance. Lenovo Vibe P1 The phone has an aluminum body with Gorilla Glass 3 on top of a 5.5" 1080p display (IPS). The Home key below the screen packs a fingerprint reader for added security. The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 615 chipset with 2GB of RAM, running ANdorid 4.1. The Lenovo Vibe P1 features a 13MP camera with phase-detection autofocus on the back and a 5MP selfie camera. It's a dual-SIM with LTE, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac (with Wi-Fi boost that allegedly improves range) and Bluetooth 4.1. It also packs. At 189g and 9.9mm thickness it's a bit chunky, but for that you get up to 30 days of battery life (on a 4G network) and 44-45 hours of talk time (on 3G-4G). The Lenovo Vibe P1 will launch in October starting at $280. Lenovo Vibe P1m The smaller of the two, the P1m features a 5" 720p screen and 4,000mAh battery. It can power other gadgets over USB OTG and features OneKey Power Saver but not Rocket Charge. Instead it relies on standard Quick Charge - 2 and half hours of talking in 15 minutes, 2 hours and 40 minutes to full battery. The chipset on the Lenovo Vibe P1m isn't as fast as that of its big brother either, a MediaTek MT6735P chipset brings a modest 1GHz quad-core processor, but it does keep the 2GB of RAM and runs Android 5.1. Lenovo Vibe P1m The body of the phone is made of polycarbonate and the innards have been nano-coated (by P2i), making it splash-proof. It's thinner and lighter too - 9.3mm and 148g. The Vibe P1m is still a dual-SIM phone with LTE connectivity, it also offers Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.1. You can expect 16 hours of talk time and 20 days on standby on a 4G network (23 on 3G). The Lenovo P1m will launch earlier than the P1 - mid-September - and will start at...

Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 will be up to twice as powerful and energy efficient as its predecessor

In a dedicated blog post, Qualcomm announced that the upcoming Snapdragon 820 chipset will be up to twice as powerful and energy efficient as its predecessor, Snapdragon 810. The San Diego-based chipmaker has developed the SoC specifically with high-end, ultra-thin devices in mind. Snapdragon 820 has its cores designed for heterogenous computing. The process allows the chipset combine various cores such as CPU, GPU, and DSP to perform a task, instead of using a single core for it. The quad-core Kryo CPU with 64-bit architecture found in the Snapdragon 820 has been integrated tightly with the Adreno 530 GPU and the Hexagon 680 DSP of the chipset. The Kryo processor has been manufactured via 14nm FinFET process, so it promises to go easy on the battery as well. In short, Snapdragon 820 promises to be a much more stellar proposition than its controversial predecessor. Qualcomm has been quite keen on stirring up hype around the component, so expectations towards it will surely be high when it debuts in a device. Source...
