Sony confirms Xperia Z3+ overheats, promises software fix

Another smartphone hits the market sporting the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, and immediately there are widespread reports of it overheating in day to day use. This time around we're talking about the Sony Xperia Z3+ and Z4, which are basically the same device, only the latter designation is used for its branding in Japan. A few hours back we told you that Japanese buyers of the Z4 have discovered it's overheating a lot. Even some retail stores in Japan are now advising prospective buyers of the handset to turn it off from time to time to make matters better. In the meantime some testing performed on the Xperia Z3+ in the Netherlands has revealed the exact same overheating problems. When using the camera or playing graphics-intensive games is when these things are most felt - literally. The phone gets very hot to the touch, and then the apps that caused it to overheat are closed. A warning message shows up on the screen prior to this, saying the app will be shut down because the temperature of the Z3+ is too high. Contacted by a Dutch publication, Sony has acknowledged the problems, saying that "in some cases" overheating can lead to apps being closed, as well as the back of the device getting very warm to the touch. This shouldn't be cause for concern, the Japanese company thinks. However, the manufacturer has promised to come up with a software update sometime this summer, which will supposedly fix these issues. Until that happens, if you aren't satisfied with how your Z3+ performs you have to get in touch with a Sony service center. The promised update will most likely just throttle the CPU and GPU clock speeds even more aggressively, not allowing them to reach higher rates very often. This should result in less overheating, but with the side effect of significantly decreasing performance too. Source (in...

Android One isn't doing all that well, but Google is determined

Android One was launched back in 2014 with a lot of enthusiasm and determination. Now, as the first more substantial reports start coming in, it seems that the initiative hasn't been doing all that well. For anyone unfamiliar with Android One, it is a Google project intended to aid manufacturers in developing and offering budget-friendly smartphones on developing markets. It is Google's intention to introduce new technology and current means of communication and data-exchange to vast developing markets such as India and China and the Android One initiative definitely looks like the way to do so, at least on paper, that is. The reality, however, is that less than a million Android One handset have been sold in India to date, which is definitely a slow start towards the ultimate goal of reaching "the next billion people", which Google set for itself at I/O 2014. But, despite the poor results, the tech giant has remained determined to proceed with the project and like the wisest of PM's, has carefully identified its errors and is taking steps to correct them. Caesar Sengupta, Google's VP of product management, was recently interview on the matter. His comment was filled with optimism about the future of Android One: No, we're not backing away from the program, ... We remain pretty committed to it. Android One is now in seven countries. Overall, we continue to work with OEMs across the board, local and large OEMs for bringing Android One's value proposition to many more markets. Sengupta also stated that two main problems with the program were identified. The first one has to do with offering unsuitable products on certain markets. In the future, Android One devices will be better tailored for the specific needs of the market they are meant for. This might break the initial concept of uniformity across the whole Android One realm, but will most-likely have a positive effect one product desirability. This being said, Google might also be reconsidering its initial sub-$120 price point for Android One devices. After reevaluating consumer needs and desires, the price target might be shifted up to the $100-$200 range. This will give OEMs a lot more room for feature implementation and hardware improvements, while still retaining the original idea of an affordable package. Last, but not least, there is the issue of availability. As Sengupta out it: Initially, when we had launched, people couldn't buy them in all channels, that is something that we need to address. In our future (launches) with our partners, we want to make sure that we're truly available everywhere. It is vital for Google to iron out these problems to ensure a bright future for Android One. Still, it is quite optimistic to see that the search giant has taken the initiative to heart and is determined to see it...

Japanese Sony Xperia Z4 users experiencing heating issues

Users of the new Sony Xperia Z4 in Japan (known as Xperia Z3+ elsewhere) are experiencing some heating issues. Several users have posted on Twitter, saying the phone is too hot to touch. If that wasn't bad enough, some retail shops in Japan are also warning customers of the phone's heating issue, advising them to switch it off periodically. The reason for this could be boiled down to the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, which is known to have some heating issues. It is for this reason Samsung went with its own Exynos processor for the Galaxy S6 and LG went with the less powerful Snapdragon 808 for its flagship G4. If the heating issues are not sorted out soon, Sony might soon start feeling the heat from...

Verizon Galaxy S5 getting minor OTA update

Verizon has started rolling out a minor update to the Samsung Galaxy S5 handsets on its network. Unfortunately, this isn't the Android 5.1 update that many are eagerly awaiting. LG is considering metal body for the LG G4 Pro

LG G4 is already out and sure looks good, especially if you opt for the exquisite leather rear covers. It has better display, faster chipset and enhanced camera, compared to its predecessor, rounding up an overall impressive package. LG is already prepping its next big thing, though, which will be announced in the second half of 2015. This should be the recently rumored LG G4 Pro, but we have no details beyond the alleged name. Still, the latest reports from Korea say LG has a though choice to make. Apparently LG has to decide whether to use metal for its next flagship for easier separation from the LG G4. It seems a good option and switching to metal will boost the looks and offer the necessary exterior difference. LG also thinks on switching the method the aluminum is processed. While Apple and Samsung are using the widespread CNC (computer numerical control), LG will be improving the quality with enhancing the tech process with adding press and then doing the cut via CNC. This should be improve quality and possibly lower the production costs. Others at LG are not OK with opting for metal for the flagships, and want to keep the metal frames for the niche devices only. They are traditionally slightly cheaper than the flagships, with less processing punch, but compensate with unique design and choice of materials (the Samsung Galaxy A series offer a few good examples of such devices). So, LG is already prepping its next flagship, which will probably go head to head with the Galaxy Note 5. Hopefully everything turns out for the best and we get some proper phablet competition. OnePlus 2 test unit appears on a poster

A couple of days ago OnePlus launched the second edition of its Photo Mania contest. We wrote in detail what you need to do to enter, and the prize is a mysterious involvement in a secret project for the launch of the hotly anticipated OnePlus 2. It is this OnePlus 2 that popped up on the company's Facebook page, promoting Photo Mania 2015. But before you get too excited, you should know that the pictured device is an "engineer test unit", so not much is really revealed. It's also a safe bet that it's a render of the test unit instead of an actual physical phone, though we don't doubt the existence of such. Not much can be said about the upcoming OnePlus 2 on that image alone, except that it has a display and a camera and the latter is only by deduction, as we can only see the front. We can also assume that the small eyelets on either side of the screen won't be a feature of the smartphone's body, but are maybe a part of a case, which protects the test unit from prying eyes. The contest deadline is June 15, but we'd be surprised if the OnePlus 2 launches immediately after. An announcement sometime in Q3 is a more likely...

Xiaomi Mi 4 64GB gets a permanent price drop in India

Xiaomi has permanently dropped the price of the 64GB Xiaomi Mi 4 in India. The phone was previously priced at Rs. 23,999 ($375) but is now down to Rs. 19,999 ($312). Meanwhile, the 16GB model is priced at Rs. 17,999 ($281). The price drop can be seen as a preemptive attack against the OnePlus One, which recently received a price drop outside India that would undoubtedly make its way to the Indian market soon. The Mi 4 has a 5.0-inch, 1920x1080 resolution display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB RAM, 16/64GB storage, 13 megapixel rear camera, 8 megapixel front camera, and 3.080mAh battery. HTC unveils One M9 INK limited edition inspired by body art

While sales of the 'vanilla' One M9 aren't going at all as well as HTC had hoped, the Taiwanese company is keeping itself busy by launching various limited edition versions of its flagship smartphone. Not long ago we saw a 24ct gold model in celebration of the UEFA Champions League football tournament, and today the One M9 INK has been made official. This is a model that's inspired by body art, and was made in cooperation with British tattooist Cally-Jo and British fashion model Jourdan Dunn. Cally-Jo has created the design of the tattoo-like engraving that's featured on the back of this limited edition release, while Jourdan Dunn will head the promotional campaign for it. The 'tattoo' is made up of a few symbols: an eye (because it represents "strength and sincerity"), a hand (for "protection and positivity"), leaves (which apparently "show a blossom of creativity"), and the sun and moon (which represent "balance and harmony"). Unfortunately no pricing has been announced yet for the HTC One M9 INK limited edition. It's also unclear whether its release and associated promo campaign will be restricted to the UK or not. If you want to register your interest for the device, make sure you head to the Source link...

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 to feature a USB Type-C port

Right on schedule to counter Sony's choice to steer clear of the emerging USB Type-C trend for the time being, reports have surfaced stating that Samsung is to implement the new interface in the upcoming Galaxy Note 5. It's worth noting that it will support USB 3.1, which may have become synonymous with the Type-C designation, but is in fact a distinct standard. The obvious convenience of the reversible plug aside, having USB 3.1 Type-C on your phone means transfer speeds up to 10Gbps with compatible devices. The pair of standards also brings support for 1.5A and 3A currents for improved power delivery. Industry insiders have also revealed additional key specs of the future high-end phablet. Screen size will be increased to 5.89 inches, though the rumored jump to 4K resolution is not going to happen, the sources claim. The increase in display diagonal comes with a decrease in thickness, and the new model is tipped to be 7.9mm thick, compared to the current Galaxy Note 4's 8.5mm profile. Battery capacity has been quoted at 4,100mAh, a significant upgrade over the 3,220mAh of the existing model. A further improved version of the S-pen stylus will make it to the Note 5, though it's unlikely someone has expected that a headline feature of the lineup would be retired. Android 5.1.1 is the OS version the phone in development is currently running. So far the consensus is that the smartphone will be powered by an Exynos 7422 chip, a modified version of the 7420 found in the current Galaxy S6. The speedy UFS 2.0 memory of the flagship will also be carried over to the larger model. The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is more than likely going to become official at the IFA in Berlin this September. Plausible as all of the above may seem, there's plenty of time for things to change. Source 1 Source 2 (both in Korean) |...

Meizu m2 tipped to come with a 4.6" display and MT6753 SoC

The successor to the popular affordable Meizu m1 is apparently in the works, and by the looks of it, the m2 might be announced as soon as the end of this month. Publications in Chinese tech sites reveal that invitations have been sent out for a launch event, though no date has been specified, nor the product to be launched. Meanwhile, a photo has surfaced, portraying the alleged back panel of the Meizu m2, or rather a whole box of them. The panel is a glossy plastic affair similar to the previous model, so no surprises there. Aside from the photo, sources have revealed some info on the innards of the Meizu m2, which may become official less than 6 months after the m1 was announced. Oddly enough, the new model is tipped to come with a 4.6-inch display, a step back from the 5 inches of the predecessor. It will still reportedly have FullHD resolution though. A Mediatek MT6753 chipset is said to power the phone, which is one of the Chinese manufacturer's midrange offerings, and offers global LTE support. It features an octa-core Cortex-A53 processor and Mali-T720GPU, joined by 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. We'll have to wait and see what the event later this month will bring. If we're lucky it may be the new Meizu MX5 instead, which has already gone the established road and passed Chinese regulatory certification. Source 1 (in Chinese) Source 2 |...

Sony Mobile does not plan to launch phones equipped with USB Type-C connector in the near future. The Japanese tech giant is considering the connectivity solution, but will wait for it to gain more traction in the industry before committing to it. Apparently, the new connector will not help Sony make thinner and lighter smartphones. Currently, the company is focused on producing thinner camera and display modules in order to achieve the aforementioned goal. USB Type-C is gaining popularity because of its reversible plug connector and potential for speedier data. Both Apple and Google released notebooks featuring the new connector. The search giant is also committed to bringing it to it Android smartphones as well. Source |...

Lenovo 6.8-inch phablet with 3500mAh battery leaks

Lenovo is pushing the boundaries of what's called a phablet these days and has come up with a 6.8-inch device, which it'll still try to have you use for voice calls. What is so far known as PB1-770N, has passed certification at the Chinese regulator TENAA, revealing most of its specs. Lenovo PB1-770N at TENAA Computing power comes from a 1.5GHz octa-core processor, though architecture remains unspecified, as is the chipset. There's 2GB of RAM on board and 32GB of built-in storage, and a microSD card up to 64GB can be used as well. Lenovo has deemed the FullHD resolution sufficient for the 6.8-inch diagonal and with a 324ppi density most will be inclined to agree. You also get a 13MP primary camera, but you'll be limited to 1080p video. On the front there's a 5MP selfie shooter as well. The PB1-770N, which let's face it, will have to get a more marketable name before launch, is one large device. Some might see a resemblance to a scaled up Apple iPhone 6 Plus, but we're not the ones to judge at this point. The Lenovo phablet measures 186.6 x 96.6 x 7.7mm, and although the footprint may seem unwieldy, the thickness sounds better. Weighing 230g, it's also not exceptionally heavy for its size, but that has come at the cost of battery capacity, which doesn't impress at 3,500mAh. With certification passed, the Lenovo PB1-770N should become official in the coming weeks. We'll have more details on pricing and availability then. Source |...

ZTE Star 3 rumoured to come with 4K display

The ZTE Star 3 - alleged renders of which leaked online a week ago - could come with a 4K display, making it the first such smartphone in the world, according to a new report out of China. As per the report, the device could sport a 5.5-inch display with 2160 x 3840 resolution (pixel density of 806ppi), similar to the one Sharp announced a couple of months ago. In addition, the report also noted that the TFT Panel will make use of a special crystal structure which will not only reduce power consumption but also improve the strength of the display. It is being said that the display on the Star 3 will be manufactured by China's BOE. Needless to say, none of this has been officially confirmed by the company, so take it with a pinch of salt. It's worth mentioning that the deal, which is for limited time only, is only available if you purchase the handset through the company's own ShopBlackBerry website. The discount comes just months after brokerage firm Morgan Stanley said that the Passport and Classic aren't selling well. Source 1 | Source 2 |...
