Week 31 in review: Galaxy Note8, V30 and Nokia 8 lead the rumor train

We're back in the rumors lane, where the most interesting to do is speculate on the flagships of the Fall. It's not long left now until they start coming in, so naturally rumors are going wild. The only change of pace was when Motorola announced the Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus mid-rangers with new improved cameras. The Samsung Galaxy Note8 dominated the headlines thanks to leaked official renders and a so-called official specs sheet. We also heard that it's coming with a 3x zoom camera. The Nokia 8 was once again in the news as was the LG V30 which will have a curvy front glass and an...

Weekly poll: which screen type do you prefer, LCD or AMOLED?

The answer to "what phone should I buy" usually starts with questions about screen size and budget. It's the first thing would be buyers should decide. The more selective among users then proceed to ask about the quality of that screen - resolution and panel type. Today we want to focus on the latter - LCD or AMOLED? The battle seems to be over as Samsung has been pushing AMOLED for years, Nexus/Pixel have been on and off and on again, LG is jumping ship, even Apple is on board. Is that the end of LCD? Unlikely, there are some high quality panels (like the ones used on iPhones) that are...

Top 10 trending phones of week 31

The Galaxy J7 Pro became the first phone in the last five installments of the chart to retain its leadership for more than one week. It's also the third week where it's the most popular of three Galaxy J7-series devices in the top ten, along with the Galaxy J7 Prime at sixth and the Galaxy J7 Max, positioned at eighth place. The top 6 phones didn't change positions as the newly announced Motorola Moto G5S and Moto G5S failed to get enough traction to move things around. At seventh, we have a different newcomer - the Lenovo K8 Note that is bound to arrive in India next week. It will...

Counterclockwise: the megapixel race of cameraphones

We've traced the rise of the cameraphone before, but since we're in a lull in the megapixel race, we wanted to look back and check the milestones reached along the way to the Nokia 808 PureView - the 41MP monster that (five years later) is still the phone with the highest resolution camera (and only matched by Lumia 1020 since). The Audiovox PM8920 may have been the first to cross the 1MP line with its 1.3MP camera in 2004. Niche brands aside, Motorola brought out the 1000 series phones that same year - the touch-focused A1000, the E1000 bar and V1000 flip. The Windows-powered MPx220 also...

Weekly poll results: Secondary screens get limited support

The casual user needs just one screen, our poll shows. There is interest in a second screen, but it can't be just anything - ideally, the extra screen will be on the back and it will be eInk. The reasons range from checking notification to preserving battery, eInk is great for reading long texts and showing an Always on Display at no power cost too. It does, however, preclude using the second screen for main camera selfies (the low frame rate will be a pain). The Meizu Pro 7 was rumored to have an eInk screen, but it turned out that it's an AMOLED. There's YotaPhone, of course, but the...

Just in: Xiaomi Mi Max 2 hands-on

Back in May Lei Jun, Xiaomi CEO, unveiled the Mi Max 2. Expected to have the same camera quality as the flagship Xiaomi Mi 6 and the latest MIUI and Android software, we see the device for the first time as we are getting ready to review it. We got the Matte Black version of the phone, which was launched a month later. The first thing that grabs the attention when the Mi Max 2 is out of the box is its size. Xiaomi has kept the same humongous 6.44" LCD panel with Full HD resolution as the predecessor Xiaomi Mi Max but surprisingly comes with wider side bezels. The result is a slightly...
