Weekly poll: do you think gaming phones have a future?

One of the more famous failures in tech history is the N-Gage - the dominant phone maker (Nokia) failed to popularize on a product that aimed to replace the lucrative handheld gaming consoles (just think how many Gameboys Nintendo has sold). That scared makers off gaming phones for over a decade, but that fear may have finally faded. Razer released a gaming phone, so did Acer (also a tablet) and now Xiaomi has jumped the Blackshark, uh, jumped on the bandwagon and apparently ZTE wants to do the same with its nubia brand. What makes a phone a "gaming phone" anyway? The over-the-top...

Counterclockwise: our favorite models that companies no longer make

Last week we reminisced about favorite old brands, but that was just part of the story - while many brands are still around, some of their product lines have been discontinued and we wouldn't mind seeing them come back to life. The Nokia PureView is an easy pick, the 808 was a feat of engineering and the Lumias pioneered some now standard camera features. We don't insist on the name (which is owned by Microsoft), a new N-series would be just as cool. Also, we wouldn't terribly mind a phone that can match the build quality of the E-series. Nokia 808 PureView • Nokia N8 • Nokia...

Weekly poll results: Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s found sizzling

How hot is the new Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s? "Very" is the answer. The comment section lauded it for the slender bezels of its notch-free display, although the LCD vs. AMOLED question was prevalent among commenters. Everyone has preferences in that debate, but the Mix series has used LCD since its inception. And while it's a pretty major upgrade, keep in mind that this is an "s" model so a complete overhaul was unlikely. The new chipset and dual camera sure are appreciated, though. We'll echo some of the comments wishing for an Android One version of the phone - MIUI is feature-packed, but some...

When Steve Jobs demonstrated the first iPhone at Macworld in January 2007, he famously stated that smartphones at the time had ‘baby software' while referring to WAP as the ‘baby internet'. While that may have been true, it's easy to look back today and highlight everything that iOS didn't have. You see, when it came to operating system development, Steve Jobs adamantly believed that you had to start humbly, focusing on the simple elements such as what a button would look like. Then build upon the solid foundation. If we included every iOS feature you'd be here all week and probably...

Nokia 7 Plus in for review

HMD Global's plan to resurrect the legendary Nokia brand has been going smoothly so far. The new Finnish management owns a lot of that to just a few, very important, core design principles. Instead of blindly trying to outspec its competitors, HMD went about things a bit differently, building solid devices, with a focus on a pure and clean Android experience and timely updates The Nokia 7 Plus is the perfect embodiment of that ideology. Rocking a Snapdragon 660 chipset, it doesn't try to outdo its mid-range standing and get in the Nokia 8 Sirocco's way. Yet, in many ways, the Nokia 7...
