Weekly poll: are pop-ups better than sliders?

Our polls show that you love the motorized pop-up mechanism of the Oppo Find X, the smaller periscope of the vivo NEX S and the manual slider design of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3. Now it's time to pick your favorite. All three eliminate the need for a notch and bring other perks as well. The Oppo Find X has a motor, springs and two ribbon cables (which you can see in the teardown), a pretty complicated mechanism that takes up a lot of room. The mechanism on the vivo NEX S is more compact, but no less complicated. The Honor Magic 2 - a manual slider like the Mi Mix 3 - was recently taken apart...

Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite in for review

The Mi 8 lineup has gotten a little complicated - there are five major variations. The focus now is on the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite, the latest addition. How it compares to the other members of the Mi 8 line is just one of many questions to be answered by our upcoming review. For starters, it's the only one without an AMOLED display, opting instead for an IPS LCD panel. It's larger than the Mi 8 SE's display, however, and the notch cut out into it is the smallest out of the five displays. Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite and its retail package • Dual camera and a fingerprint reader on the back The Mi...

Weekly poll results: Oppo RX17 Pro rates well, Neo fails to impress

The Oppo RX17 Pro entered the European market this week and attracted some positive interest in last week's poll. The Super VOOC charger has some people hooked, the minimal teardrop notch coupled with a in-display fingerprint reader also seems like a design win. That said, it seems that Oppo may have missed the mark with the pricing - €600 is too much. Interestingly, water resistance came up as a con quite often, that's something the OnePlus 6T doesn't have either. But people also had reservations about Color OS. And you know what? Not one person commented "wow, a 3D ToF camera!", so we...

Counterclockwise: short history of the memory card

The first time data was stored on a card was in the distant 1725 when punch cards were used to automate a drawloom, which weave fabric and tapestries. In a way those cards stored images, though not quite how it's done today. Then in 1884 punch cards were used again in the Hollerith Electric Tabulating System (think electro-mechanical Excel). Hollerith would later start a company that would become the foundation of IBM. Hollerith punch card • Olivetti Programma 101 • Magnetic cards for instruction storage The Olivetti Programma 101 (1965) is considered by some to be the first...

Unboxing and hands-on with the Thunder Purple OnePlus 6T [Gallery]

OnePlus announced its mid-cycle release: the OnePlus 6T in a New York event last month where the company announced that the OnePlus 6T was arriving to T-Mobile in the United States. We were also expecting to hear about a purple variant of the phone though there wasn't a single mention of it at the event. Just about a week later, OnePlus announced an exclusive color for the Chinese market: Thunder Purple, during a Chinese launch event. Only for OnePlus to announce (exactly a week later) that the Thunder Purple finish was arriving to all markets. The variant is now available in North...

The Xiaomi Mi Laser Projector is now available in the US

The Xiaomi Mi Laser Projector is now available in the US through Walmart, priced at $2000. It's an ultra-short throw projector that can be placed between 5 and 50cm away from the wall, and is capable of producing in image up to a 150 inches in diagonal in 1080p resolution. Xiaomi promises up to 5,000 lumens of brightness and 3000:1 contrast. With all of that in mind, the price isn't half bad. That said, importing one from China through other channels could potentially save you some bucks, but you're left to deal with customs and there's the matter of warranty, or the lack of...
