Weekly poll: Huawei nova 4 vs. Samsung Galaxy A8s

Punch hole displays are here - for the last two weeks two of them have been vying for the top spot in our Daily interest chart. They are the Huawei nova 4 and Samsung Galaxy A8s. Their popularity is pretty close, so it's time to settle this - if you were to buy one of the two, which one would it be? Let's start with the defining feature, the punch hole. Both phones probably use the same display panel - 6.4" IPS LCD with 1,080 x 2,310px resolution. The selfie cameras hiding in the hole are pretty similar too, 25MP and 24MP, both with f/2.0 apertures. Both phones have the same punch...

Weekly poll results: OnePlus 6T McLaren is loved but expensive, just like a supercar

The OnePlus 6T McLaren got the nod of approval in last week's poll and a word of warning. The price tag has risen to the point where gaps in the spec sheet are not acceptable. To be fair, the pricing of special editions doesn't follow the same rules as mass market phones. The carbon fiber look and McLaren logo are probably enough for fans to justify the €700 price tag, for everyone else there's the €550 OnePlus 6T (well, €630 if you need 256GB storage). Plus, Warp Charge 30 is a welcome improvement on an already fast charger. Owners of the McLaren edition can also boast about the...

Counterclockwise: the rise of texting

The first SMS was sent on December 3 1992 - it read "Merry Christmas". It was a test message sent from a computer, the first commercial service would open for business the following year. SMS quickly become the glue that holds the world together. Trillions of messages are sent every year and they range from quick words between friends through bank notifications of money transfers to paying for parking. The system is pretty limited - it supports messages up to 160 characters. And those characters are mostly limited to the Latin alphabet plus some diacritics. Other alphabets are...

If you live outside of China, you will find the Chinese version of the ROM to be somewhat unsuitable so this will come as a huge relief to current Mi Mix 3 users. A member of the XDA-Developers community provided a link for downloading the full image. It weighs around 1.7GB and it's based on Android 9.0 Pie and includes all the usual Google Play apps and...

Week 51 in review: Huawei nova 4, Lenovo Z5 Pro GT and HTC Desire 12s debut

Phone makers typically don't make a lot of announcements in the last weeks of the year, but 2018 is clearly bucking the trend. The last but one week of the year not only had the numbers but also the quality. Lenovo announced a trio of new phones, inluding its new Z5 Pro GT flagship - the first handset to come with a Snadragon 855 chipset and 12GB of RAM. Meanwhile Huawei unveiled a 48MP smartphone - the nova 4, which is also only the second handset to feature a punch hole in its display for the selfie camera. HTC had an announcement of its own too - the Desire 12s is a lower mid-ranger...
