Realme Book (Slim) Review

It may feel like a decade, but it's been only about 3.5 years since Realme launched its first product - the Realme 1 - and the company has quickly expanded its product portfolio since then with the launch of fitness bands, smartwatches, wireless earphones, Bluetooth speakers, smart TVs, vacuum cleaners, washing machine, a tablet, and a laptop, dubbed Realme Book (Slim), that we have with us today for review. The Realme Book (Slim) is known as Realme Book outside India, and is not just Realme's first laptop but also the first from the BBK Electronics group. The Realme Book (Slim) is...

Tecno Camon 18 Premier in for review

The Tecno Camon 18 Premier announced earlier this month has landed at our office for review in the Polar Night color. Opening its retail package reveals a protective case, 33W adapter, USB-C cable, earphones, SIM ejector tool, and the usual paperwork. The Camon 18 Premier is built around a 6.7" FullHD+ AMOLED screen with 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of up to 550 nits. The panel has a punch hole in the center for the 32MP selfie camera, but there's no fingerprint reader underneath. Instead the scanner is embedded in the power key on the phone's right-side frame, and...

Weekly poll: Pixel 6 series is going on sale next week, who is getting one?

It finally happened – Google bought modern image sensors to the Pixels! Previously it relied on its image processing magic, sometimes (but not always) backed by its custom chip, the Pixel Visual Core. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro do have a custom chip inside them, the most important chip, in fact. The Tensor is Google’s first custom chipset for mobile phones, crafted with the help of Samsung and its 5nm foundries. It’s an unusual chip, the first one we’ve seen with two Cortex-X1 cores (the Snapdragon 888 and Exynos 2100 only have one), plus it makes the odd decision to use the older...

Flashback: the story of OLED displays on mobile phones

The first OLED displays to be used in mobile phones arrived in 2003 – almost all of them flip phones. And there’s a simple reason for that, the displays were tiny and were placed as the secondary screen on the outside of the flip. Some of them were able to render 256 colors, though others were monochrome. Phones like the Samsung E700 and the LG G7030 had such color displays with 96x64px resolution, while the inner screen were 128x160px that could deliver 65K colors (16-bit). Samsung E700 • LG G7030 • Motorola V303 • Maxon MX-7990 OLED continued to be used exclusively on...

Weekly poll results: the Realme GT Neo2 eyed with doubt

The Realme GT Neo2 failed to stand out against its siblings, judging by last week’s poll. It may be worth another look - since the poll went up, we published our review of the phone and while we found a few issues, the phone does offer great performance and battery life for its price. The alternatives differ depending on where you live, e.g. the GT Neo Flash never launched in India. But the Realme X7 Max did and it offers very similar features for less money. The usual sticking point were brought up once more. Realme GT Neo2's best features at a glance While neither the Neo2...

Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro hot take

Google's Pixel 6 event this week was the least surprising tech event in the history of tech events, maybe ever. We knew most of the details well in advance thanks to a combined effort from Google's marketing team, a number of industry insiders and reviews less than perfectly willing to adhere to embargoes. But that doesn't mean that it didn't leave us with some strong impressions. There's something grand about a Google smartphone event. Despite Google's niche status on the hardware market, its number one position in software makes a Pixel launch important to the whole industry. And now...
