We recently exclusively reported that MediaTek is working on a new 6nm chip codenamed "Next-G" which will be announced towards the end of the year, with Doogee being one of the first brands to use it. Now a reliable source tells us that it will be a Doogee S98 series smartphone that will be powered by this MediaTek chip. While we don't have any other details about this smartphone, our source tells us that Doogee will launch three more devices under the S98 series, dubbed S98, S98 Pro, and S98 Ultra. The Pro and Ultra versions are expected to go official in April or May, but the vanilla...

Flashback: the Sony Xperia X series left us feeling like something was missing

Sony’s flagship Xperia Z line gathered a few loyal followers back in its day and had several esteemed members in its ranks. However, in February 2016 the series abruptly came to an end with the arrival of the Xperia X series. Sony didn’t quite move away from flagships, but the new models definitely had a different feel to them compared to the Z5 series (which included highlights like the first phone with a 4K screen). Let’s look at the original trio. Sony Xperia X Performance The Sony Xperia X Performance was the leader of the pack with a Snapdragon 820 chipset, a much-needed...

Xiaomi 12 Ultra to run on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ chipset

The famous Chinese tipster on Weibo, Digital Chat Station has revealed that the upcoming Xiaomi 12 Ultra smartphone will run on a still-unannounced Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+. Given that the Plus variants of Qualcomm's flagship SoCs are usually announced in H2, we probably shouldn't expect the Xiaomi 12 Ultra before the end of Q3 2022. The device with the corresponding model number has popped up on the radar with an unnamed Qualcomm SM8475 SoC. And since the current non-Plus SD 8 Gen 1 chip carries the model number SM8450, it's safe to assume that this is indeed the Plus variant. Rumor has...

Weekly poll results: strong demand for the Galaxy S22 Ultra, the other two are in its shadow

You can’t call it a Note, but you can call it a winner – the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra decisively topped the chart in last week’s poll. It was by far the most popular option and this is still in the pre-order stage, before detailed reviews have come up. This phone just has people excited. There is still a large contingent of people waiting on reviews (we’re working on it), but so far the future of the S22 Ultra looks bright. Will people warm up to its two siblings, given positive reviews? Maybe. Right now both the Galaxy S22 and S22+ are failing to convince people that the new cameras...

Qualcomm's next flagship SoC to support the AV1 video codec

The AV1 video codec aims to improve bandwidth efficiency on high-quality videos and has already been adopted by YouTube and Netflix. However, Qualcomm's current chips don't support native decoding of AV1 videos, unlike Samsung's Exynos flagship SoCs from 2021 and 2022. Well, Qualcomm will quickly catch up, introducing AV1 decoding in its upcoming 2023 flagship chipset. The source of this information says the SM8550 chip will be the first one to adopt it. The current Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC's model number is SM8450, so it's probably safe to assume that it's the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 we are...
