Top 10 trending phones of week 14

Samsung Galaxy A53 extends its winning streak to three weeks and just like the last installment of our trending chart it's joined on the podium by the Redmi Note 11 and the Galaxy S22 Ultra in that order. And just like last week we have a new announcement in the fourth spot, only this time it's coming from Realme and is the 4G version of its 9 mid-ranger. The Galaxy A73 has regained a position and is now fifth, trading places with the OnePlus 10 Pro. The Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max and Xiaomi 12 Pro take seventh and eight, while Samsung Galaxy A52s refuses to let go and clings...

Our Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G video review is now out

The Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G came out in China first, then it reached India as the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge and went back to the Note 11 Pro+ 5G name for the global launch last week. So, keep that in mind, this isn’t the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G that is sold in India (oh, Xiaomi...). Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G Now that we have that straight, here’s our video review of the phone, which complements the written review. The sizable camera bump on the back is home to the 108MP camera, a 120Hz 6.67” AMOLED display spans the front, while stereo speakers (tuned by JBL) adorn the sides, along...

Week 14 in review: S22 series struggling, M53 official, X80 Pro+ coming

Another week to recap, let's begin. Samsung reintroduced the Galaxy S20 FE in Korea as the Galaxy S20 FE 2022 - the same phone with a trimmed down retail package and lower price. Samsung's flagship S series' popularity is decreasing. One report points to the Game Optimization Service as the culprit, saying it seriously tarnished the image of the S22 series. It seems some carriers, like Korean KT and LG Uplus, are upping the subsidies to make up for that, though. The Galaxy M53 is official. It's a watered-down Galaxy A73 5G with the same 108MP camera but a Dimensity 900 chip, instead of...

Flashback: remembering the awesome devices powered by TI OMAP chips

We often talk about how many companies have bowed out of the smartphone race, but the industry is difficult for component makers as well. These days most Androids are powered by either a Qualcomm or a MediaTek chipset. There is also the Exynos line from Samsung LSI, but the company rarely finds a client outside of its sibling Samsung Electronics. Unisoc has carved out a niche for itself and has found success. But we're not going to talk about any of those today, instead we want to reminisce about a chipset maker that called it quits almost a decade ago - Texas Instruments, "TI" as its...

Huawei MatePad Paper in for review

Huawei introduced the MatePad Paper at MWC 2022, its most unorthodox tablet yet with an e-ink display. Now that unusual device is finally in our office and we are about to start its review. But before that here are some early impressions. The MatePad Paper ships with a folio cover, and Huawei provided an M Pencil in the retail package as well. They all snap together neatly, thanks to the magic of magnets. The e-ink display is rather big - 10.3” in diagonal. It has an unusual off-center positioning, with a thicker bezel on the left side enabling easier holding. The whole device feels...

Weekly poll results: Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G is poised for success, its siblings headed for oblivion

Xiaomi did the right thing by expanding the availability of the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G. The phone was previously available in China and in India (under the name Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge 5G), now the phone is reaching for a wider audience. It will be a hit, judging by the numbers in last week’s poll. It received nearly two thirds of all votes and most of the positive votes. Let’s just say that the other two Redmis didn’t fare as well. Xiaomi includes the powerful 120W charger in the retail package, the phone has a microSD slot and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. It’s a crowd-pleaser amidst phones...
