Snapdragon 810 SoC is falling short from sales forecasts

The Snapdragon 810 SoC has been shrouded in a lot of controversy ever since it was first announced. The chips has been plagued with overheating issues and accusations that it simply didn't manage to shake. It seems that despite all of Qualcomm's hard work, fixes and improvements, the beastly chipset still heats up under pressure, a fact that cost the company one of its biggest clients - Samsung, quite early on in the development cycle of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. Others did adopt Qualcomm's chip, but, market statistics now show that it is a major flop. The Snapdragon 810 didn't sell nearly as many units as anticipated. The heat issues confirmed with Sony's eagerly-anticipated flagship models - the Xperia Z4 and Xperia Z3+ were the more or less the final nail in the coffin of Qualcomm's flagship SoC. These handsets supposedly run on a revision 2.1 of the Snapdragon 810, meaning that, at this point, the design seems so fatally flawed that it is beyond salvageable. All in all, the Snapdragon 810's market failure comes as no reals surprise. On the other hand, the consequences it entails could dramatically reshape the mobile world for years to come. We'll just have to wait and see. Source (in Chinese) |...
